The cork door project

Cork door - in progress - this was from yesterday

So, I've been working on my "cork door" since Sunday. I decided that I only wanted to do one row at a time... mind you, they are actually 2 corks thick rows, but isn't that just part of crafting? So, today I put the 4th row on the door. Then I took a tape measure and measured it. 4 rows = 7 inches I have 24 inches to go on the door. So, I suspect it will take about a month, of daily work, to finish the door - of course supposing I have enough corks! This is only the top part of the door, but it is my #1 part of doing these doors, not 100% what I'm going to do on the other 3 panels of the doors...

I like the way it is looking and get a good idea of what the end result will look like. I really like this idea! Great job and very creative! I was like GG when I first read you were do the cork door project, I had not idea it was going to be actual corks. Wonderful!

I'll bet if you asked politely at a likker (MyLot blocks the proper spelling for who knows what reason!) store, they'd probably have some used corks (left from broken stock), or could save them up for you. You might be able to get them cheaply, or maybe even free! Maggiepie "A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul." ~ Source unknown

Now I was visualizing cork tiles and was not sure why you were proceeding only one row daily. This explains it very well for me. I think I am starting a list of things to do with things I have. You are motivation for some of it.

glad I can be an inspiration - coming in a bragging about it helps me go out and do it! I finished the "bean bags" yesterday - but I put about half a cup of rice in them instead - and not just any rice, but rice I had scented for a project that never finished a couple of years ago!

I put scented rice in a hot sock for sore spots. I am going to make bean bags for the girls, and then take it from there.

It is looking great, very time consuming and a lot of work but it seems to be going very well. I am just giving a suggestion they sell self adhesive cork tiles/mats that could be used for the bottom of the door, it is that same type of material used in cork boards and at least it will be a lot easier to apply - the counter to it is the price. But with your imagination I am sure you will find something amazing to do with the other panels.

Well they do say that preparation is 90 of the job normally. Well I hope you have a lot of fun.

Only takes about 10 minutes to apply the corks, but it does take a bit longer to size them, so the pairs are about the same size. I've also seen using old cookie sheets to make a magnetic board, thinking about that on one side of the door as well.

I saw this on Facebook and I think it's going to look great! It sure does look like it would be time consuming for you and I can't wait to see it when it's completed...awesome! Where is this door? Does it lead to your kitchen or somewhere else? Or is it in one of the craft sheds? No matter where it is, it's super cool! I hope you have enough corks to finish the job.

it is one of the 4 panels of the craft shed doors, and I have made a major dent in the supply, but I've been told there are more on the way!

I want to knock out some projects and since my sister is coming into town, probably between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I need to have my family Christmas presents done early!

We actually started back in April, so we have knocked a few projects off the list, but I want to get some of the craft projects knocked out during the week so I can do the shed projects with the roomie on the weekends.

What's the cork for on the door? Will you being used it like a bulletin board or is it for the cats? Or is it a sound buffer? Maybe you wrote about this before, but I haven't been here as much lately, so I'm sure I missed it if you did.

Are you using corks from bottles? I have seen this before and it's very cool.

Do you mean that you are using actual corks like stoppers for bottles to cover the door? I had pictured sheets of cork like what is used on a cork board.

WOW you are energetic! I would never have thought of doing something like that I see you got your craft area finished! I am just getting rid of some of my crafts at 59 there comes the realization that you will never be able to do everything you want so I am slowly getting rid of things and keeping only items I KNOW will get done unless my health takes another twist.

I'm TRYING to not buy more, and knock out some of the ones I've got, it remains to be seen if I'm successful. I'm going to be 58 soon, so I agree about not getting everything done.

Wow that looks so neat I never would have thought to do something like that. Kind of reminds me of when people make doors out of bamboo with how it looks. Where in the world did you get so many corks? How do you get them to stay on are you using a glue or nails or something? It looks like so much work but will be so worth it in the end its going to look amazing. great job.

Elic on Maggie's computer - I am gluing them with Gorilla Glue. Its not hard to figure out the pairs and its not hard to glue, but it is time consuming to do both and yesterday I didn't sort new pairs so I'll have to do that before I can glue today.

When it is finished it will be worth all the work. I was picturing something completely different! Where did you get the idea and all of the corks?

ElicBxn OH I really like this cork door...what a creative idea and it will look so good. I would think it might be good insulation too?? Keep posting photos as you progress

That may be, but since even tho we put in walls and insulation, it is still a shed, so I don't think it'll matter all that much because of the great gap under and around the doors... still, its more for use as a place to pin stuff and to look at and I'm happy with it so far...
