Will mobile phones nudge watches and calendars out?

It is new year again.. And I was looking at the pile of old calenders that I'd just pulled down from each and every room. They will be recycled of course. But were they really needed? That got me thinking.. My cell phone is good enough to show me time..so it can show me the date, year, day, even whether it is a holiday, and warn me if that were so. Why then should we continue wearing watches and use calendars.. Shouldnt they be on their way out?

Hi Vandana, Yes your correct, the mobile phone had already replaced watches and calender. I felt calenders had become as decroative things in home and watches had become make-up things now days.

So if calendars are only decoration pieces, why must we buy something that we dont really like? Why cant we get good art up there. :)

My mobile does not indicate holidays for which I need to look at the calender. The mobile does not indicate sundays in red. I dont think the wall clock and the calendars on the wall can ever be replaced by the mobile. Half the time we have to hunt around for the mobile. The calendar and wall clock will always be in its place.

By the time the mobile application creators start all these applications in mobiles my grandson will be able to use them all. I dont see it happening very soon. And about making the mobile like a wristwatch? What would be weight of the mobile then. My wrist would start paining with the weight of the mobile. As it is I dont like heavy wrist watches or heavy bracelets on my hand.

That is as of now. Give the mobile applications creators. You could mark birthdays, wedding anniversaries, appointments etc., in those calendars of mobiles. And you could even instruct it to read it out to you a couple of times in the day so that you'd know what you cant afford to miss out on. :) And as to hunting your mobile, they are planning to make it wearable like the wrist watch.

I even had tried Rainlendar once (it is a calendar application on the PC that was sent to us by our Australian Boss). I used it for about 2 long years but still did not feel comfortable. Am I growing old - nah. I know it is more about comfort zones and my stubbornness that I dont want to change

My watch is solar powered so I don't really need to put batteries in it... It's also "atomic watch" so it sets by itself... I don't like having time & date displayed on my phone, as weird as it may sound... I'm on my phone a lot for work & I don't need to keep pulling the phone away from my ear in the middle of business call just to see what time it is... And it makes it easier for me to plan out business meetings & other things while I'm looking at the calendar... I don't always wanna pull out my cell phone or boot up my computer or pull something out of my pocket when all I have to do is glance over, weather it's a clock, watch or calendar...

Oh dear..suppose they create a mobile phone that you wear like your watch and it has a blue tooth arrangements. And it can pick the information of appointments from your conversations, without you having to note it down there. And if it can read your day's timeline each day twice or thrice perhaps while you are traveling to your office. ..the mobile phones manufacturers would definitely try to develop equipments like that for you. Would you still be averse to them?

I think the bulk will be removed from mobile phones. And they will soon be strapped around our wrists. And we will not even have to glance at our wrists for time. The cell phone will tell us in voice mode what is the time, date, month, and year. :)

Maybe not watches, as they can always be viewed as a fashion statement, but definitely the calendars! I think gone are the days when we seek out the room or the wall where these calendars are hanging, as we can always look it up from our celphones. I think this would even save a few more trees.

I thought mobile phones were also fashion statements..there was a time people out here used to brandish Blackberry's as if they'd purchased a Rolls Royce.

It may have been in the past (or it still is), but sooner or later, when the technology has leveled out, it would just become what it was intended. Just another communication device.

I do not carry my cell phone in my hand 24 hours of the day. If I am going out my cell phone will be in my bag but I will wear my watch on my wrist for quick reference! If I have to go back to earlier months or have a look at what Feb. has in store for me I need a calendar vandana!. The calendar hangs on the wall. No need to switch on or off the calendar! Have a wonderful time with your cell phone and one never knows there will soon be wrist cell phones!

Actually, I think there soon will be something that we wear on our wrists. It will have room to keep those credit cards. It will also work as cell phone, watch, calendar. It will monitor glucose and other problems with the body and give alarm beeps. and it will work as an alarm clock when we have to start doing something or give somebody some gift. All that, and it can also be used as a miniature video game set, or television set. It can also work as a tablet - i.e., you could use internet, and also do your computer work on it. Did I forget something? Oh yes, it works on personal biosystem. The moment is touched by a person who does not have same DNA composition, it would become as much of a waste as plastics. It also uses solar power, though it is possible to charge it from other sources. Well...so no handbags, wallets, watches, blah blahs. :) And I aint joking..that will be the next level technology is aiming at. :)

Until that happens we shall continue to wear our watches and continue to hang calendars at every nook and corner of our house. What say vandana?

Agreed with reallysuny, vandana... :D My real Calendar is showing a lot of happenings; from holidays, religion holidays, commemoration days, international commemoration days, and my Balinese Calendar also shows good days to be married, animal husbandry, going out, starting new business, and days for temple festivals :D meanwhile calendar on the phone only shows what we've date inputs likely for friends' birthdays and our activities diary. :D

Aw but who looks at the calendars to remember all those things? I mean, we could always have a software program that allows us to mark such things, and we could pay a nominal amount to get it loaded each year in our cells. Even better, the service provider can offer it free to us. We could have it with us even when we are traveling. Dont you think?

another uses of the paper-thin calendar to pin your bills... to remind you how much money you've spent this month... Too bad, my mobile phone is very out of date ones. just enough for me to do texting and calling or receiving call... not a gadget maniac. :D

Yeah, we can always stick our bills on the fridge's door with those magnetic bullets... So many of them, I forgot to turn the page so the last three bottoms bills were forgotten... Vandy, like 3mangesti I am not really into high tech. They say, the more you use high tech the more others can track you... so better hide everything and live peacefully.

Hi aai... I seldom recycle old calenders. In my rent house all the calenders i have from 2004 (i joined in college) to 2011 ( have not hanged the calender of 2012 yet). In my home, my mom keep the pictures of gods and cut the picture portion and hanged them on her temple. In case of other pictures, all are settled in that way and sometimes i use them to create collage or montage. Its true that uses of cellphone has separated us from calenders as we have the all facilities to have updated through cell. But for me, usually i like to have calenders on each room of my home. have a nice time.

Hi vandana Quite so, this will be somewhat happening in the near future. The sales of wrist watches are already going down and sooner or later these calendars would be history. But personally, I would want them around as I feel more comfy looking up on a date at the calendar rather than trusting me to use my cell phone or even the PC

You echo my sentiments kiddo. I am old and do not find it easy to learn new things. By the time such things come, I might not manage to learn the new things while the old ways would disappear faster than I can imagine. It is only matter of time..

Gosh, I found lots of discussions I have not responded and it dated 5 months ago? I may found some dated last year. I should start clearing them from my email list. It's been years that I don't have wall clock, but I still do have calendar. I guess you are right, with mobile phones we will not need watches and calendars. I like to have a calendar, it's easier for me to check dates for months ahead also what holidays would I get that year. While wrist watch, it's more a form of accessories, still it's useful to look at the time fast.

Hi Surely mobile phones has taken place of calenders and watches. Mostly all people used to see them in mobile phone only. I don't know about calenders but people still using wrist watches.. Personally I used to wear watch but still sometimes I watch time from my mobile..

akp - in about 10 years time, people would no longer use their watches. That is what I am saying. Calendars have also ceased to be as important as they once were. Thanks to the mobile phones. :)

I've not used a watch in years. Firstly I used a pager as a replacement, and in recent years my cellphone. Since I got my smartphone I have also dispensed with the need for a calendar. The only thing I miss is the sexy lady on each month which is more of a blessing really. I have heard exit doors are on the way out?

You are exactly the person who represents the future generation. :) What I didnt understand is, if you miss the sexy lady, you could download something like that, couldnt you? And why would it be a blessing not to have that lady there..

The future generation? Who me? I am a voice of the past but I like to think I have at least a foothold in the present, but I wouldn't go much further than that. As for downloads of sexy ladies - I have a lifetimes supply!

I think that cell phones will easily replace calenders, I know many who keep track of their schedule on their phones, laptops, computers etc. However, I don't think cell phones will ever replace watches, its a lot easier, and quicker I might add, to flip the wrist to check the time than to stop what you are doing and pull out the cell phone. Even cameras have time on them, but I think a watch is an old standby. Paramedics need watches as well to take pulses, they can't pull out a cell phone and fiddle with it, same with doctors, the watch and clock will always be around.

Well, "if Mohammed wont come to the mountain, then the mountain must come to Mohammed". I think mobile phones will cease to be units like the ones we have. Instead, we will be carrying them around on our wrists instead of watches. And they will become much sleeker, elegant, and light weight over a period. :)

Well wall calenders with god/goddess pictures are my favorite, some have scenery and some are just date, no pictures, yes Vandanji we can look at cell phones to know date, but watches and calendars have their won charm, just my opinion lol Thanks for sharing Best of luck. Professor
