Projection---‘how important is this?’

Does projection make a lot of difference? While watching a well taken photograph where the same picture looked different on two pages on account of projection, my mind drew an analogy. We have come across so many people in life. 1] Some are very keen on projecting themselves well; they thrive on projection. They believe more in form than substance and keep making loud noises about the minimum they do. 2] There is the second category of people who just are not bothered about projection and keep doing their work silently without a word and wait for their performance to speak. 3] We have the smart kind of people who perform as well as project themselves discreetly. How important is ‘projection’? Personally I feel that projection without performance will not take a person a long way. It may have short term success but long term success calls for hard work as well as good projection in the right area. I am sure you would have seen people projecting themselves, not projecting themselves, parents always projecting their children , undue projection of average performances ,skillful projection combined with good performance etc.., This is valid right from the work of a homemaker, student or employee, professional or an institution. Please share your views and experiences.

Blowing one's own trumpet becomes necessary when there is no one to blow it which apparently is the situation today. Many a time there are those who take credit for something they have not done and when one is in the midst of such people, it is necessary that the world knows whose work it even though one has to blow one's own trumpet. There are those who have the gift of the gab to make their presence felt. Good for them. Projection without performance as you said is short lived but if it is for a one time victory they sure are winners. The best combination would be performance and projection in subtle ways.

what else can one add? When no one is willing to acknowledge something , it has to be a case of blowing one's own trumpet. And as you rightly have pointed out, we cannot allow someone else to take credit for what we have done.Well said!

When it comes to performance that plays a part in getting jobs, etc, here one cannot fib as there will be documents to prove them. But when it comes to pro active acitivities they have taken a toll as far as I am concerned. I have done loads for society, for freinds and family but hardly get recognised. I could write volumes on the subject. But here are a couple of incidents. I had helped a friend of mine get a job with a company where I had some contacts. When someone asked my friend how she managed to get that job she makes mention of my friend and my name is nowhere in the picture. I had floated a trophy for my company involving a word game where 16 companies participated. It was during the time someone else was the social secretary but the entire credit went to her. I did raise a shindig about it later but this social secretary was mum and lapped up all the credit. That is life. It is time people kept a vigil so that they do not lose sight of the credit that truly belongs to them.

That is unfair and it would have hurt very much at that point of time; we are after all human. However, in hindsight and with advancing years we take it as the way of life. But this also teaches us lessons about vigil.

You are absolutely right. There was a time people get a high grade with 85-95% of marks with outstanding results and they are selected or chose for various jobs. But now-a-days, it has observed that people who score with such a higher grade and they are gloomy and low in projections are comparitively useless and non-productive. Especially in the marketing and dynamic field, those who just covered an average of 60-65% with a highly dynamic power in speaking and style of reaction made remarkable influence on other people. So, if people with a better projection and knoledge offer more results than the higher grades (there are exceptions) but in general, it is a need of the time people should have more projection and better guester in the day to day life than the other way. However, the projections should have 'contents' and not just a pop up doesn't mean that they are real or genuine.

Projection without content gets exposed soon but as allknowing has pointed out, if it is just one occasion some people win.

It is something like how we 'handle't the topic. See, for a 'same question', people will get different marks like 4-5-9-2-7 etc. The question is same but the marks scored by different people are different. Why? Mainly the knowledge about the question, how it is presented and the right way which is explained. The same way, with a 'typical topic' if 10 people are asked to demonstrate the same, all the 10 people might have different accents, way of speaking, the method adopted for expalining etc may be different for 10 people. Some people may be boring, some will be interestsing, some will be neutral. So, when the person gets 9-10 marks out of 10, we can estimate he done a good job and nobody will sleep when he demonstrates. So, it is certain personal 'quality' that he has to expose or demonstrate or project the topic and he wins. So, we ourself needs to get prepared to 'how better' we can explain, what simple langugage we can use, and how better we can interact and communicate with the people infront of us. So, the combination of all these qualities helps people for a better projection and that is the need of the time.

My views on this subject could fill many pages (or hours)...but cut to the quick....the generation of "baby boomers" are about to step out of the spotlight.....and the generation of "narcissists" is here! Why...blame the "baby boomers" promising their children..TOO MUCH, and toooooooo deeeeeeply re-inforcing that the "world is their oyster"....There for the taking! And the reticent ONES (quiet & product) have been tromped down by the narcissists! My thoughts...

My God! You seemed to have condemned the whole lot totally ! However talented a person is , and however great a performer he or she is if the person does not let the world know it , how will he or she get recognition Pergammano!

I understood what you were trying to say and no one normally likes bragging people. In fact I had also written that I personally believe in diligence coupled with projection in the right quarter.Shallowness is seen soon.

By NOT wearing bells and whistles...and not self aggrandization...how about Great performance...diligence, hard work! I can see that I failed to respond properly and make my point...as I said, it is far TOO deep an issue for me to condense in a few words! Sorry!

Why bother taking a pic of the person doesn't project? Unless its just a cute candid and then you just get whatever. Good light and a good subject and what else do you really need?

Good light and a good subject are what are needed to get a good photograph. There is no doubt about it.Of course the photographer must have a keen eye to get it . ! Thanks for the participation.

Yes they will appear different depending upon angle of projection. I agree projection without performance may not work for long. Thanks for this discussion.

Hi kalav, my neighbours are like that simply they will be shouting for nothing to draw attention from us, they act as if they are smart and doing lot of help for others they will be talking loud because we must hear them and to know what they are doing.

Hi kala, you have brought out some very valid points here. I too agree that we need to strike a balance in anything we do.There is no point in projecting oneself all the time, let others decide for themselves how good or bad you are while you keep dong what you have to do.I also feel that you are judged depending on your actions and interactions, and that is something that you have to learn as you go along if you want to be successful in your relationships ..

Hullo Kiran! How nice to see you here! are you back or was it just a peep in? Keep some time for mylot in the midst of your schedule. We definitely learn a lot as years go by; some people are wise straightaway while there are others who learn as they go; however , there are a few who do not learn too. Good performance with right projection is what I feel is ultimately needed.

Hello kalav, Once I worked in a certain Hotel in England where I did all the hard work and someone else took most of the credit both in praise and wage packet. She got paid much much more than me yet I did what you would call "the donkey work". Brag about on the Dinner table how hard she had worked all morning and I was thinking "oh yea you know that you did not". But in the eyes of everyone else she was "the worker of the year". See how I know how it feels? Most times I am quite happy to let other people take the limelight I do not really care for the limelight at all really. But she was quite annoying because this was every day of the week as I worked 7 days a week sometimes as well. I left my heart and soul in those rooms as they were very difficult to keep clean and to clean. I find blowing my own trumpet hard to keep going sometimes as everyone here in this house gives themselves a lot of importance and they play their trumpet even louder and that makes for "too much noise" lol. xxx

That was quite mean of her and meeting and mingling with such persons day in and day out is so difficult.I cannot understand this lack of integrity at all; wel1 I have to accept the fact that it takes all kinds of people to make the world. Don't worry and be self effacing if everyone is making too much of noise; you must also make your point in a subtle forceful way when opportunity arises.

Hello kalav, It was mean of her but I have forgotten and forgiven her ages ago. She is now blowing her trumpet elsewhere I suppose I am so pleased I don´t have to be there. Don´t worry I make myself heard when its needed but otherwise you have to go along with all the others playing their trumpet as I find them too wearisome to keep protesting about. I can be forceful yes and more than once with other Family members but just for saying a mere thing you can win yourself lifetime enemies but it does not worry me now as I blew my trumpet for that girl and she still thanks me for it although I do not get to see her now at all.xxx

Correct, very true. I often see people that have a nice projection can drive attentions even we can say that they have a little or a common skills. When people have lack of projection I can say that he/she will surely experience difficulties in gaining attentions. Like once I watched a noon time show program and saw a girl dancing gracefully with matching a great projection, she doesn't win the portion but actually get a huge attention by the all the hosts and now she's currently hosting too.
