Books and book cases

Books and book cases are some of the heaviest things I have that will need to be moved. I have books everywhere it seems. I certainly hope in the new home I can designate a corner or two to be my library. I know that there was a time when having books was only for the wealthy, but having books has been one of my favorite things my entire adult life. Some of the book cases I have were given to me in recent years when other family members have passed away. I can imagine that many of us here love to read almost as much as we love to write.

I am also moving this summer, and I have about 20000 books. As I put 44 boxes full of books in a 6m3 truck (about 2000 books), I need to do 10 travels for my books. I have thought to sell them all, and perhaps I will in the future, because I don't want to do this again.

@topffer That is a shame the books were stolen. Must have been gone for them to take that many from you. Or was it someone you knew and thought you could trust..if so, i hope they aren't in your life anymore.

I used to have more : I have had a complete library of Latin authors (about 2000 books) stolen in an apartment a few years ago. I worked 30 years to complete it, and I have stopped to buy books since this moment.

My husband and I moved two months ago. We are still renovating the new house, and all of my books are still in boxes. I hope that I will be able to unpack them in two months. Before we moved we gave hundreds of books away, but there are still many books left and we need to buy more book cases.

My first husband built custom shelves in our first little house. They were not perfect but were awesome, and adjustable. They did not work here as they relied on anchoring to the floor and ceiling. The little house was 7.5 foot ceilings, this one had ten foot ceilings and the shelves just did not reach.

The book cases I am working on today are small. I can remember them from almost sixty years ago. I have one pretty neat barrister book case that needs care to maintain stability. It has a door with a broken glass that I shall have fixed. It is full of mostly cook books.

@Rosekitty I am hoping to get more organized when I move. That was the only category that was really organized.

Hi, I can understand your need to have books around you..I too love books and I have a huge collection of old magazines besides other books which I like to go through once in a while. It is always a problem to store and maintain books here in India because of the weather conditions ,I have managed so far but as my collection grows it is becoming more difficult to maintain them,,,

I can imagine that it is quite difficult to take care of them. Are you in a humid area?

That is certainly true of me. I've been on a reading binge this month and it's been detrimental to my work. I just want to sit around and read. I read a 500+ page book yesterday and a 300+ page book today, both by Jan Karon. Yesterday iI was Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good, and while reading that, I discovered that I'd missed one book in the series, Home to Holly Springs, so I picked it up at the library yesterday. I keep justifying my reading by telling myself I will review the books on my blogs, but my writing can't catch up to all this reading.

I guess you dont have to feel guilty or justify when it comes to reading it is such an absorbing hobby.I have sat up all night to finish an interesting book and sleep walked through my daily routine the next day..

OOH... book people just like me lol. If there is a time when hubby says... NO MORE BOOKS... it's when we move. I've tried to be very good the last couple of years and I'm no where near the 20,000 that topffer mentioned and I just called him in to take a look! Now my books don't seem quite as bad lol! But my time is coming whether we move north or south ;)

I like to read so much more than writing. I never really have like writing. When I was a kid, I didn't like to read all that much. Probably because I had to read certain books and such. Now I can read what the heck ever I want.

I officially envy you as you have a library that you can call your own. My dream home would definitely include a room that will serve as a library.

I have always been a reader. I have had several books over the years. My attic is packed with several boxes of them now. I should give them to the library or to a thrift shop. I keep a certain few as collections but the rest I read and put away.

With so many books being discarded these days, we've bought and gotten for free tons of used books - really enough that we could have our own bookstore! The kids love books - and I have a love for childrens books too as I collect them - we have books all over this house!!

You seem to have a great hunger for knowledge, and some types of knowledge come from places other than from books.

I have a descent amount of books. But they are mostly Stephen King books. I used to belong to the Stephen King library and I got all the books as they came out. I was thinking about joining again, maybe after the holidays.

@GardenGerty I need to think about it first. The first thing on the agenda is this September. Apples next KeyNote where they will be introducing a new Apple TV. Hopefully it gets much better than it has been. Then sometime after the holidays I will consider getting back into the Stephen King Library.

The hubs and I have been contemplating a move for some time now. When we first started thinking about it, I had a lot of books, but nothing unmanageable. Now......OMG I'll need a 30 foot van just for my books! I don't envy you at all sweets! lol
