My Bird Friends, Friends, Birds

Hello Friends and Lotters As many know, I stay at home 24x7 and have no where to go. And when you have nowhere to go, you dont have that many friends. But then, the friends, that you have, tend to become more special. Since last May (2014) I have this pair of two birds who have been coming to my window sill every day. Initially, I felt it was the heat (as it was summers) and they come there to cool off (as there is a shade in that area). I started providing them water. They would empty the container soon. Each day, it became a routine. Then one day, they started knocking on the window. Somewhere, I felt they might be feeling hungry. So I started providing them biscuits too. . Since then, it has become a routine affair. I am so much in love with them. Today, I care for them more than anyone else. I dont know if they are that attached to me or not, but now, if they dont come around, I feel worried. I am planning to write a small book on them the relationship we share. Unfortunately, people around consider that is the most weird idea that ever came to me. But still, I want to walk the path. It is never satisfying unless you try and give your best of efforts. There are two routes and I need help. I need to ask my well experienced, well informed mylotters - Should I start a Blog (yes, I had a couple of blogs at one stage on the free Google - Blogspot now called Blogger and Wordpress) OR Should I club everything together on a Book and offer it on Sale? OR Should I go with both - the book and the Blog. Oh yes, I have a small, very short video uploaded on YouTube too. Please view that in case you have a minute to spare. Cheers, Sid.
2 friends of mine, these two birds. They are free and they come to me for their food and water. Providing them with the food and water, is a feeling of doing ...

We can have real relationship with birds. A few years ago, I was feeding a couple of turtledoves. They were guarding their food and were hunting every bird trying to eat it. They made an exception for a couple of blackbirds, their nearest neighbors, and I saw often the turtledoves and the blackbirds eating together. I supposed it was intended as a good neighborly relations policy (their nests were not far), and I did not cared about the blackbirds. One day, in September or October, I was in my kitchen and I heard somebody knocking... at the bottom of my door. I opened the door. It was the mother blackbird, with 4 or 5 children. They did not moved during several seconds, watching me, then they went away. I realized later that they were gone, and that it was the way that Ms Blackbird had imagined to tell me "To thank you for the food, I want to introduce you to my family". I would first start to write a blog with a serious web counter on it. If the blog is successful I would look for a real (paper) publisher, and I would send him the manuscript AND the stats of the blog : I do not believe in ebooks.

@topffer I watched in some movie that the kind of publishers you speak of exist. I dont have an idea at the moment about them existing here, but surely, there would be some like them - maybe in a different state or anything. I think Penguin Books maybe one of those kind of publishers. (but yes, I admit, it is too early to think about it). As for the domain name, I will PM you one with an idea behind it.

@thesids I would open a dedicated blog for the birds, but mixing things is also possible. I have just checked and mybirds.com is for sold, mybird.com is parked at Godaddy! Not easy to find a good domain name with all the sharks around wanting to make money with domain names.

@thesids I have been paid by such publishers for various books or articles in books, but never by a big one like Penguin Books. I can tell you that I never earned a fortune like this. The last one was a touristic guide where I was asked to write a few pages with several other authors. My part was only 7/8 pages on a 150 pages book. It has been printed at 10000 (you need large editions for books with photos in color) and I have earned for the moment about $100 for this one. Not bad for the time I spent to write my part (a touristic guide is something easy compared to a scientific book), but I would not make a living with writings. The publisher was a small publisher from Paris who called me. I have worked for the moment with 5 different publishers. Every publisher has its own specialty : novels, history, science, tourism... and knows how to promote his authors and diffuse them. It would be crazy to try to auto-publish your book and to sell it by yourself. This is only possible for e-books, as they cost nothing to print them and diffuse them, but I do not believe in e-books.

Hi sid, I feel that you should go ahead wit h whatever you want to do..let others say what they want , that should be the least of your worries. I feel that writing blog is very helpful because you have a record of every little thing and it is a good reference when you begin to write your book !

Thanks Kiran for this. I too think that a Blog would be good to start with. Iniitally, I was of the opinion to publish a book. But that becomes costly in India unless you are a known author. i have a few photos and a couple of videos to get things started.

@kiran8 I always feel that we should never put things off because life is too short and before we know it will be over That is exactly what I too think. I want to give it a try.. and even if I fail. I will not be repenting later thinking - I wish I should have done that or this that time - as I know what I plan to do is not going to hurt anyone anywhere.

It's the first time I saw that kind of bird. Not that I'm familiar with most kinds of birds but it looks a bit like a crow to me except for the long beak. I think you can start on a blog first or just continue doing a video blog like what you have on YouTube. When you get more subscribers you can go write that book and offer it for sale.

@thesids Yeah it's not a crow at all but it somehow reminded me of it. Good luck with your blog!

Oh. No these are not crows - they are too small for their size and not even black. As for the blog, yes, all the primary formalities are all done now, domain is registered. I am only awaiting for some emails to host the website. Most likely it will be online by this month end.

Wow, that is wonderful you have such a relationship with these birds!! What kind of bird are they - I've never seen them around here. I say go with what your heart says - never mind if anyone thinks that is weird. Both are doable, I would think - you should have lots and lots of photos of them for all to see! Best of luck!!

@thesids Well I'm just saying that because these birds go right up to your window. So perhaps it would be cool if the readers felt as if these birds were coming right up to them - wherever they are reading your words from - you would be sharing your window to what you observe so your readers can have a relationship with them too so to speak!

I even dont know what they are locally called. But they have been around. I do appreciate your recommendation of collecting more and more pictures of them for the blog and maybe the book. this part had never occurred to me. thanks again for bringing it up

Create some of the text before considering where to post it. The idea sounds lovely and it may well work. You should check out the movie The Birdman Of Alcatraz, the true story of Robert Stroud. He studied birds that flew into his prison cell and became a world renowned ornithologist. Don't get too lonely.

I have noted down the name of the Movie. The story as on Wiki about this man Robert Stroud looks very much interesting and it should be a treat to watch. I will be hunting for the movie at the local DVD first (as the movie is quite ages old and not the genre they prefer here, it will be difficult) and if I do not find one, I might be trying other sources.

Wow! An animal lover? That's not weird, in fact, that's adorable and sweet. If you love them dont be afraid to love them. Do not be "chained" by other people's comments and reactions. As long as you remain good and humble and hurts no one, then i could say that you should go and make that book and pursue your happiness. Loving someone or something isn't weird. So continue loving your birds and take care of them. Spread the love!

Hello Gavin Animal Lover... I dont know, but I am attached to these two and do care for them, their food and water at least and I am thankful to the Almighty that I could get a chance to serve them. Loving someone or something isn't weird. I completely understand. But some around me thing it is a weird idea to think of Publishing a book on this relationship that I have with these birds.

Hi there BUSYSID, Hmm... Why do we bother thinking about what other people say and think? I mean, we are not made for them to mold us. We have our own minds and hearts and along with that is our own happiness. Dont be affected by those around your circle. let them speak all they want. They can only suggest, mock or even think that we need help, But we are the ones who is deciding and no one can control or dictates us what to do, what is right and what is weird or not. As long as you are happy with loving those birds then so be it. its what makes us human. the freedom of happiness

Hello Sidhu, I watched the video which is very nice. All living things have their own life style and some of them are attached with others in a weird manner. I think man become best friends of birds most of the time and it may not be weird. But the difference is, usually men take birds as a pet, here these lovely birds came to you by their own and you understood their needs and satisfied them for that. Regarding your question, that is upto you, first you write and complete it. On completion of writing you will get the insight of how to publish it too. Great work dear Sidhu.

Hello Didi First, I am happy to see you back, for sure. I dont know why they came. My mommy thinks it is because the could see their image on the glass of the window and that brought them on the window. Whatever be the reason, today, they are a part of my life and I really care for them. I have some small videos of them too and I feel blessed that I can get them their requirements. I appreciate your viewing the Video clip too. It was one of the very first ones that I managed to record.

Publishing a book in print is expensive and I have yet to research on this one. I had originally thought about getting it ready for Kindle, though.

I enjoyed reading this post. It is rare that strange birds would visit you every day and that too in a pair. Keep up the good work. I have birds visiting my garden specially to bathe in the bird bath.

I wished they liked me and realized that I will never ever hurt them. When I open the window to re-fill their container or even give them their biscuits, they would fly away to the tree right in front (if you watched the video you would have an Idea). It is my dream that someday, they overcome this fear and stay perched on the sill as I serve them with water and food.

Hello Druscilla. I appreciate the fact that you too care for the animals and birds. Normally, people in this part of the world only have them caged or as a pet in their house. However, I have no such intentions. I would be starting a blog on them quite soon and maybe (as a few others opined) someday, I will follow it up with a booklet if not a novel

I had a golden oriole who would visit me for months, then he brought his companion along ..but before long he fell to the bullets of a crazy man who was shooting pigeons. I had written a short story many years ago.. Your post reminded me of that.. No I have no suggestions to offer you.. I just wanted to share my story with you.

Makes me feel sad with what happened to the golden oriole. To be honest, there are times when such thoughts cross my mind too. It is sad that we can almost do nothing and there are no laws here (and in many parts of the country) unless of course the species is declared endangered and preserved by the Government.

I enjoyed your video on YouTube. I am big animal lover and I love stories about animals. Unfortunately we don't any many birds in our garden, our dog scares them away. I don't find your idea weird at all, and I think that other animal lovers will be interested in reading your story. A blog sounds like a good start
