An Apple a Day...

We all know the old saying, apples are supposed to promote health. They contain vitamins and phenols and they are known to fight tooth decay. All that said, did you know that apples are the fruits that contain more residual pesticide? I know that organic fruits are more expensive, but they are considered safer to eat. Do you buy organic when you can?

Apples are already a luxury for me here. They cost about 4 USD a kilo (if they are good quality) and even the lowest one is 2 USD/ kilo. And going by that, single apple costs about 50 cents. as there are only 4-5 that go in one kilo. Organic stuff is not easily available here at my place and so I dont have a choice. Given a chance, I will opt for organic stuff for sure.

@LadyDuck It is an advantage for people who grow their own veggies, fruits etc or they know the people who grow them that closely as you say. Unfortunately we at the Cities and Towns here, never know what is being served.

Organic fruits and vegetables are very expensive. I buy directly from farmers if I know them and I am sure that they are really organic.

Not really. May be you live in a locality that is expensive. Out here we get apples for Rs.15 to 20 per apple. It also depends upon where you live and where you shop.

I do not buy organic, usually. I do wash all my fruits and veggies, and I will buy from individual farmers. The fiber in apples is also a good reason for their reputation as a healthy food.

That is exactly the reason why I avoid apples even if they are quite tempting. We have lots of homegrown tropical fruits here so I would rather eat them than take the risk with apples.

@LadyDuck It's so nice to have an apple tree in your garden. Yes, those apples are definitely safe to eat.

I buy organic when I can. We are fortunate that we have an Aldi's grocery store one county over that sells organic fruits and veggies at a very reasonable price. When I am able to get there I buy organic. Sometimes Walmart also has organic at a reasonable price as well. My kids love apples and so do I.

I use apples mostly in baked things, so they are always peeled. I think that may get rid of the pesticides? I am careful not to eat the seeds, as they contain arsenic.

It seems that the pesticides go deeply inside the fruits, they are not only in the peel. I wonder why there are no better laws to protect people.

Did you know that there are about 7500 varieties of apples? I bought a box of organic apples at the farmer's market and I've been eating 5-6 apples the last few days. I take advantage of eating lots of apples while I get them as fresh as they can be and while the price is decent.

Yes, I know, because we had almost 15,000 varieties in the past, but our apple are slowly disappearing. Apples are in season now here in Switzerland, we buy them directly at the farms.

Do you mean why to bother about pesticides? Well, in the long run they can cause serious health issues.

Can't the said pesticide be washed by thoroughly washing the apples perhaps with an antibacterial soap ?

@LadyDuck In that case then , we shouldn't be eating apples . Or should i say only organic ones . But how do we know they are that .

@SIMPLYD This is the real question, how can we be absolutely sure that organic apples are really clean of pesticides. I like apples and I eat them anyway, I hope that those I buy locally are pretty safe.

Unfortunately they cannot be washed because they penetrate in the pulp of the fruits, this is the serious problem.

I only buy organic directly from farmers I know. I would feel stupid to pay more for something that is not really organic, I have read about so many scams.

@LadyDuck Yes, I also read that some are labelled as organic food, but are actually not. It's good that you get the vegetables from the farmers you know, at least you can be sure the vegetables are clean and healthy. My friend who has been eating organic food for years told me, they actually taste very differently if they are not organic. I have totally no idea about this.

@LadyDuck Yeah, I can understand that. Organic is more expensive and probably better for you, but I just have never bothered.

@Beatburn Hmmmm... what to think, I would not guess that those apples are bio. Switzerland has plenty of apples, especially in the northern part of the country.

No, unfortunately soaking apples in water does not help to remove the pesticides, nor to peel them. The best is to try to buy apple from local farmers that we can trust.

I've actually been trying to buy more organic apples lately - particularly the ones on sale - just because we all know organic produce tend to be expensive. I don't always buy organic - and I'm mostly ok with it - but I do whenever possible. For whatever reason I do think organic produce tastes better!

I do try to buy organic, but the only true organic is grow your own food which is not really feasible in this day in age. Not unless you are a farmer. You can grow somethings, but not your whole diet.

It is rare that I buy organic, as it is a tad bit more expensive. I just make sure to wash the apple very good. I mostly peel them too to try to avoid the pesticides. I know we cant totally avoid them, but we can try.
