Games We Played

I was just sitting here thinking about when I was a child. We all know that kids these days don't play outside much and are attached at the hip to their electronics. Do kids even know how to play some of the games we used to play as kids? What about jacks, jump rope, hop skotch, dodge ball, four square just to name a few. This doesn't even count the games we made up. It's kind of sad to think about it. Those were all fun games and helped us to develop social skills and use our imagination. Plus we were out in the sunshine everyday and we got a lot of exercise. My kids were raised to play outside and like I did as a child, they would go out when the sun came up and come home when the sun went down. Unfortunately, my grandkids were born in the electronic era and though they do sometimes ride their bikes, they don't really play outside much. It really saddens me to think that this is all obsolete now and electronics have taken over the world, so to speak. Don't get me wrong, electronics have their place but I think it should be monitored with kids. What do you think?

parents should encourage or impose at least one plug - in free day for going out or playing old fashioned board games or outdoor games. I love the Toy Story movies for focusing on traditional toys rather than computer ones.

That is true. There are some places where kids see some interesting and imaginative ideas. Of course, those are movies and require screen time to watch.

My kids play out during their play time. I do not encourage watching TV or playing video games. In fact my husband and I Take turn to go out and play with them since most other kids are busy watching TV or playing computer/video games.

It is good that I don't have kids because if I did I would not even have a TV. As it is I only watch an occasional golf game on mine...and netflix movies.

Our schools have been cutting recess shorter, but they still have them and kids are told not to bring their electronics to school. We played various forms of chase and capture games, etc. Kids today often have two working parents and it is not safe for them to play outside with no one home. Kids are even snatched when parents are home.My daughter homeschools, the kids are only allowed a half hour each of "screen time" at a time. They spend tons of time outdoors. The whole family loves to go camping. I like to see that.

I agree schools are cutting out recess all together! For a few years after a certain grade they didn't get 2 recesses (morning + lunch). Kids need time to stretch their legs and be kids. They only have so much of an attention span that needs a break. Plus they are cutting out recess because the kids need more time in math ect. They expanded the school day by 15 minutes by us to get back recess and keep the amount of time spent on math up. It's all about passing tests to keep schools funded than a well rounded education.

Camping is very enjoyable for a family, my husband and I used to go camping at least twice a month and always someplace we never went before so we were always seeing different things.

I fully agree that kids should not be attached to the hip with their electronics. They should go out and play more like in our generation, playing hop scotch, baseball, mother may I and so on with the games.

Gadgets have become a great portable time killer. Instead of books or magazines we get most of our information on a gadget now days. Depending on the wait you might find me reading a magazine, checking stuff on my phone, or crocheting :)

We are fortunate that our kids love to play outside. Riding bikes, playing with their Tonka trucks, playing in the dirt and getting dirty as little pigs. They love the outdoors. Lil Keith does have an X-Box 360 but he is not attached to it. He plays with it in the evenings after homework and bathes are taken. The kids also like to have books read to them. Now the nieces and nephews on my hubby's side of the family are attached at the hip to an electronic all the time. Makes me glad we don't live so close anymore.

My little friend teaches me how to use smartphone. :) He is just three and a half years old. But the more serious stuff is if he is going to sit there in front of computer from now will his muscles develop? I worry. When I was very young, I used to love going on swing, which may not have helped my muscles, but it gave me fresh air. Thereafter, it was round us, throw ball, and badminton. Badminton stuck.

I think it depends on the family. Though my son is on the computer a lot, he does play outside with his friends, goes swimming, and plays badminton when the weather permits it. This is because I encourage him and I also go outside to "play" so he knows that I also don't stay inside all day.

The kids out here have been playing with their dads' cell phones since they were a year old. Now they know how to stream a movie and download data and play unlimited video games and they are not even ten years old. It saddens me to think that the little children are spending their time doing things of grown ups, when they should be playing outside. Sometimes I hear two girls playing in the afternoon, but that's that. It's also partly because there are no playgrounds left here. Twenty or thirty of us used to play where a building now stands. Everything is modernised, and the playground is a thing of the past. Plus ready availability of gadgets had now created this digitally addicted world with children in large numbers. It's unfortunate.

@ria1606roy I know kids like that, knowing more about technology than I do. They should be playing outside more and using their imaginations. We never had playgrounds but we always made up games or things to do. We played school, cowboys and indians and things like that.

Wheen my kids were younger, we played a lot of board games togehter. Now that they are grwon and have kids of their own, things are much different now. I don't have anyone to play games with, but i do love to play them. Always have and always will, even at the age of 67. You are right, that with electronics, the internet and smartphones, kids just aren't into those kinds of games anymore, and it is a shame really.

@simone10 My oldes grandson whois 20,is into nothing but games. He lives and brathers them. I blame his dad thought, as he is the one that gone him and his brother started with them, and once my daughter and him broke up, she never stopped them either. The oldest one is on his own, so he does want he wants, and it is a shame that he can't get out of playing games on the computer. By the way,he does work, but once he gets home from work, the first thing he does is go on the computer.

Lucky for us times changed a bit, we now have electronics and more school activities, such as sports. When I was a kid, we didn't have much homework, came home played outside. it was nice back then. Today, our kids have a lot of homework, a lot of activities, if they have some time left for electronic games, fine. My kids did just fine, they learned how to use computers really early in grade school, type and learn excel. Things that could help get a job later, I wouldn't have kids playing outside all day any more, times have changed, more kidnappings, people are not sitting outside watching kids play, they are working or cooking dinner or running other kids around to events.. I think they get enough play time at school with PE, some have sports too after school with yet more exercise.

@CookieMonster46 Don't get me wrong, I think electronics have their place. But a lot of parents don't take the time or have the time to watch their kids when outdoors. I was a busy Mom raising 2 kids on my own while working and I always made time to spend with them outside until they were old enough to not be monitored so closely. Even then, they had rules on where they could go and I watched them while I did things around the house. There is a way to do it appropriately. We can't let fear take over our lives.

@simone10 , no you can't let fear take over, but a child was kidnapped right outside down the street, and was murdered. The child went out side for less than five min to skip rope while mom was cooking dinner. My kids before they started school had time to play outside, but we had a lot of educational toys for indoors too.. I worked full time, so no my kids were not outside at the sitters. School started, we are all way too busy for outdoors, even the weekends may or may not allow for out door play. None of the kids in the block have that time either, they are doing other things. I always had time for my kids as well out doors, then things change, where they don't want to play out doors they start getting older and doing other things, sports, I am at all the sporting events with the kids, volunteer at the school in between work and many other things we do. Neighbors kids are not home, they too have swimming, karate, other seasonal sports. When I was growing up we didn't have all these activities, I sure would have liked it, rather than be home all the time. I only had one activity, that I really didn't enjoy but I still went to hang out with other kids. A lot of families in my block moved all the time, kids would come and go.
