The Waiting Game

I was finally able to get the long awaited MRI for my back yesterday. I almost had to beg my doctor and he finally gave in and ordered it. I still don't understand why he was so reluctant to order it in the first place. This is the rheumatologist that I have had so much trouble with recently. When I was at the imaging place, I had a lady who checked me in since I was there for the first time. When I told her my last name, she said that was her maiden name and she had never run across anyone with that name before. My last name isn't very common. After talking, I found out that she is the cousin of my second exhusband. Now, what are the chances of running into someone I know in such a small town as Jonesboro? So, off I went to have the MRI done. I have had a lot of MRI's in my lifetime but this is the first time that I was in one that was so small that I was afraid they wouldn't be able to get me out. The top was literally 2 inches from my face and my arms were crammed into my sides. Now, I'm not one who has claustrophobia but yesterday I had to really do some talking to myself so I wouldn't freak out. I made myself calm down and thought about any and everything I could to get my mind off of it. It was the longest 30 minutes of my life. Now I have to wait a couple of days to know the results. Hopefully my doctor can read the results. I am a bit worried since he couldn't read the MRI I had of my left hip. I had 4 doctors tell me that I had osteoarthritis in the hip and he says I don't and he didn't understand what some of the stuff was in the report. He is also the one who says I don't have RA, that it is fibromyalgia.

Anytime I have had an MRI, they have either given me the films or a CD with the films on it. The radiologist should read and interpret the MRI and send that report to your doctor. Your doctor will not have to read the MRI. Call the MRI center and ask for them to send you a copy of the report and inquire about a copy of the films as well. I have a big envelope with years worth of MRIs in it. And find a new doctor or find a specialist.

My rheumatologist has a problem understanding the MRI report from the radiologist. I have been told by several doctors that I have osteoarthritis in my left hip and this doctors says I don't. When I questioned what the report said, he said most of it he didn't even understand. As far as the imaging place, I think I will call them for a copy.

@Marilynda1225 That is exactly what I was thinking. Not a very good sign at all.

@simone10 Seems strange that the doctor has trouble reading the MRI

It sounds like that doctor is not at all reliable. Why not go to another doctor who can give you accurate diagnosis?

@salonga Yes but I will have to expand my search to the next big city which is about 100 miles away.

Finding another rheumatologist in our area is really hard because we live in a small town.

Thank you! I am hoping they do find something because this doctor hasn't believed me when I told him how bad my back hurts.

@simone10 A second opinion should be invaluable there then - good luck

When we have an MRI the hospital give us a CD that we give to our doctor. You should call the hospital and ask them.

@simone10 Also my husband was told to ask to the hospital by his doctor, nobody told him to get the CD.

@LadyDuck I am hoping they won't charge me for it but if they do, it shouldn't be that much.

I think I would start looking for a new doctor if this one can't understand the results. At least get another opinion.

I haven't been able to find another rheumotologist yet in our area. We live in a small town. So, until I find another one, I have to go to him as there are some medications my primary won't prescribe. Oh, and we found that we aren't moving after all. Yay!

There probably are not a lot of rheumatologists around to get a second opinion from. I hope he can manage.

doctors are so hard to deal with these days its like they don't understand anything we tell them. I tried to get certain tests last time and she was set with what I should have. I changed twice already in the past year. I hate it but may have to change again.

I haven't talked with him yet but his nurse said there was nothing showing nerve problems. When I asked if there was anything else that showed up and she said no. I am in the process of getting a copy of the report so I can see for myself as I don't trust this doctor at all.

I would have freaked out too if I had to be in a small one as that.. I actually have to talk to myself to get into anyone for that matter. I hate having to lie still. Hope The radiologist makes a clear diagnosis this time..

As I read this the only thing that popped in my mind is maybe its time to get a new doctor. If he's your specialist you could talk to your GP and tell him what this guy is saying/doing and maybe get a better one.

I have been looking for a new rheumatologist but living in a small city, there aren't many at all. I think we are going to have to venture out into bigger cities but the closest is 100 miles away.

I really think you should try to find another doctor. It seems you don't have any faith in this one - and I wouldn't either. I guess it is hard in a small town but he really doesn't seem to have your best interests at heart.

It has been really difficult to find another doctor in our small town. My next thing to do is find one in a major city which is almost 100 miles away.

@JudyEv So do I. I have been to doctors in Memphis, TN and in Las Vegas, NV and they have all told me that I have RA and arthritis in my hip. This doctor here has told me that I don't have either.

I've only ever had one MRdone and I struggled with that one. It was for my knee, so they didn't need me in as far as they do for a back, but it was still difficult for me. I hope the doctor is able to read the results properly.
