Is Santa Coming Down Your Chimney?

Dennis Fire Engine for Hire - Hen Nights, Children's Parties and Father Christmas a speciality!

Tomorrow I start my run up to Christmas. I have done this nearly every year now for about 10 years (I've actually lost count). Some years it has begun with a ride in the White Witch's sleigh from Narnia, one year it was in Herbie, the Love Bug, last year it was in a lovely old (but cold) 1930's taxicab. This year Father Christmas will arrive in a converted Dennis fire engine, complete with disco lights, dance floor and bar! (I'm sure that FC will be too busy to make full use of the facilities and will have to stay sober, of course!) I am not sure whether Fireman Sam will be in attendance or not. Every Saturday and Sunday through December, Father Christmas will be receiving visitors in a beautifully constructed replica of his own cozy living room. Of course, there will be the inevitable stream of youngsters, some tearfully shy, others slightly overawed as well as those who know the reality of it well enough but play the game for the sake of their younger siblings. There will, too, be the usual questions (and the usual affirmative answers, though sometimes a little qualified with doubt - gold stars for honesty, there!) I look forward to a busy but very enjoyable few weekends! Have you been good? What would you like Santa to bring you?

Oh now I know who Santa is! How wonderful if Santa felt I was worthy to be on his good list this year. As much as I have my list of wants, really I have enough - and hope that someone truly in need could have what they need instead of me.

I'm sure you are on the 'Good List' somewhere already. It is, of course, my special job to cater for some of those who need rather than just want and I do my best to fulfil that where I see I can do some good.

@cindiowens Quite a few people don't. A sad reflection on the state of architecture today, in my view. Never mind, Santa has a Secret Key which allows access to all good people's houses.

We admire honesty here at the North Pole. Shh! Don't tell anyone but the 'Naughty List' is a complete myth made up by parents.

I doubt I have been good, but I have been trying - most of the time. Sounds like you really enjoy this Santa-time and bring a lot of fun to your Christmas and everyone else's as well.

@vandana7 Those are very good things to want. It would be great if that would happen.

KOOL, that sounds like so much fun. All I've ever seen around here are the santa's that sit in the malls with lines of little ones waiting to sit on his knee to tell him what they want. I don't recall ever seeing one as a small child, but then that was 60 years ago and things were different back then.

60 years ago (well, a little longer than that, to tell the truth) my father always had to go to work after Christmas dinner and we used to wave to him as he went out of the gate. Shortly afterwards Father Christmas would come up the path and knock at the door. Of course, he was always very sorry that he had missed my father and all the presents marked for him were carefully put on one side and Father Christmas left, hoping that my father would be at home next year. I would have been about 7 when I realised the truth but, of course, kept up the pretence for my little brother, who would have been four at the time.

What fun - do you have your own beard, or do you don a false one? Good for you for helping to brighten the children's lives.

Since Father Christmas seems to be busy right now, may I answer your question, Janet? Somewhere here on myLot a friend of ours posted a picture of himself and a young child. He does indeed have a snow white beard all his own... no need for the fake one!

@jaboUK Unfortunately, those blessed reindeer keep mistaking my beard for moss, so I find it best to wear a false one. That, at least, is what I tell any observant and inquisitive children who point it out to me!

@DaddyEvil Hey, you should grow yours for Christmas - it's so unusual it would be a good topic of conversation!

Sadly I have to confess that I have not been good. I do try to be a good boy, but misbehaving is far too enjoyable to resist at times.

Hmmm ... tricky one! Do you get a lump of coal or a gold star for honesty? I think I'll have to put you down for Nat King Cole's version of "Ain't Misbehaving".

@owlwings So have I thrown away my chance of getting a yacht for Christmas this year?

@Asylum If it's possible to put a ship in a bottle, I suppose one would go down a chimney. Darned tricky things to wrap, though!

I'd rather like him to deliver Penelope Cruz but getting her gift wrapped might be tricky

The Girl of Your Dreams, eh? I'm very much afraid that she's already been booked every year since 2010 and we have no more of her in stock. Would you settle for a mandolin (even if it's not Captain Corelli's)?

@owlwings I'd be delighted by a mandolin - it would be an unlikely gift but then so would Penelope Cruz

As long as I remember, there was always a tangerine in the toe of our stocking. Goodness knows how that was done, since it was war time until I was five.

Can you visit our islands and come ridding in on the back of 2 dolphins. I have a nice and 2 nephews that would love to see a real live Santa. You see here we don't have a big jolly old fat Santa with a white beard. That is my wish for Christmas. Can you give this to me please.

I'd love to do that. Dolphins sound a very good mode of transport for Papa Noel. (I don't know much about my French brother, actually, I shall have to look him up to see what he's doing these days. I gather that he has a rather sinister companion, Père Fouettard ). I think that I would have three dolphins - I'm not sure why but that was the immediate picture I had in my mind.

@owlwings Yes you are so right. You have one in front and one on each foot. The three are hooked together and the one in front leads the pack. You have the right image. So you'll come. it's a date. I can get all the kids excited that Papa Noel will be here on the 24th. Oh you're the best thanks Papa Noel

I don't like Santa. I prefer Father Christmas. *cheeky grin* So, where does Father Christmas have his grotto? Is it in the city centre? I shall come and ask to sit on his knee because I have been a very good girl this year. :)

I prefer being Father Christmas, too. I don't think Father Christmas has a great deal to do with some Middle Eastern bishop. He's really a lot older (though he only really begins to appear in his current guise in the middle of the 19th Century). My grotto is in a Garden Centre in a village north of Cambridge.

First think I would like to get is - Chimney which opens on trace Then happiness - tension free life along with enough money to my friends and family will be a great deal In my area - where I stay, Christians are minority so I don't see such kind of celebration here since being less in numbers they visit their home town. Though you can hear fireworks going on all over the place but not near to my place

A couple of weeks ago, I read a detective story about a thief disguised as Santa Claus. He went to a function in a hotel, and after mingling with the crowd, he proceeded to steal from those rich and careless people.
