The Boondocks Otherwise Known As Boonies

I have often written about my daughter and her living in the boonies. She went to university in a fairly big city and now works in that city but she wanted peace and quite in her home life so she found a place in the boonies. She loves gardening and growing chickens and pets that can roam.
She is surrounded by farmers fields, lakes, forests, swamps and tons of Canadian Shield rock. The whole area is rural, with the occasional house planted where people can live in peace and quiet. There are swamps, and beaver dams, turkey vultures and deer. She loves her home and space.
Her partner is a builder with saw mill. He has helped to up-grade her 150 year old home and built her a new shed. Just recently he tore the old porch off the house and built a huge one in its place. They found interesting things in the walls, old wall paper, square nails, and a hammer were just a few.
My grand-dog Zuzu loves to sit on the porch and day dream. The photo above my daughter sent me (and used with her permission) shows her Christmas decorations on the porch and the dog enjoying the night.
I love my grand-dog. (and my daughter)
If you look on line for a dictionary description of Boondocks and Boonies you will find: The sticks, in the middle of no where. Usually associated with living out in the country.
I grew up in the country and my daughter was a small town girl, now she is a country girl. Are you lucky enough to live in the country??

@PainsOnSlate We have friends with a few acres in the middle of suburbia. It used to be a very rural area but they are now gradually getting more and more built out.

Both my husband as well as myself, grew up in the country on a farm. His family owned a very small farm whereas my family farmed around 1300 acres. We raised our son in a rural village, so he had other kids near to play with but no back door neighbours.

@hereandthere No my family, consisting of 2 men, work it. The equipment today is so sophisticated that it does most of the work, there is GPS on the tractor so that they drive straight when planting and other gadgets to help.

That is the way i would like to live but I like this small town now too. Actually that acreage would scare me, I had a friend in Kansas who's whole family left home in May and started in Texas and went up the country cutting wheat. The ended up in Canada to finish the job months later. Huge machines used to do it with all the modern things you mentioned above. Sounded fascinating to me.

My wife grew up on a dairy farm in a bucolic island of farmland in between Hartford, CT and Springfield, MA. She would rather be out in the country anytime and loves going camping because it gets us out of the city.
I grew up on the outskirts of Wilmington, NC near the beach and prefer a deserted stretch of beach or a calm stretch of river.

@PainsOnSlate I keep forgetting our friends are from every where. I need to ask better questions with room for all of us not really. to me, there wasn't anything "wrong" with your questions, it's understandable, and what you wrote was so good and you were earnestly sharing. sometimes it's how you word it, sometimes i think it's personal perception.

I grew up just a few kilometers from where I live now. What used to be a pasture is what separates it from where I live now. It used to be outside the city limits and we had chickens and a huge garden. I miss it a lot. Live in an apartment now. It was a great childhood.

@hereandthere I know in the construction of the porch it was wired for LED lights, these take very little electricity and last a long time. My daughter loves to decorate her home for all seasons. I will ask her if she made them or bought them, I think she bought them...

@paigea it is also impacting the value of the Canadian Dollar. We are changing some US Cash into Canadian because of the difference. The building started about 5 years ago. My son in law goes out there with his big machines when things slow down for him here. He's there right now.

I've never spent any time in Alberta. I do know it is a big farming province and I know the Rockies are there in the west . I understand there is a building boom going on too. I've only flown over it.

@PainsOnSlate I will have to check on that building boom? Everyone is complaining about the slump in oil; that affects about a third of the businesses here.

that definitely is a good image of the country life; the dog mesmerized by those Christmas lights. I am a country girl, and I don't aspire to live in the big cities. I might get lost with the hustle and bustle of the busy streets and many people.

Love the photo. I grew up in the woods mostly which some might describe as the boonies. I think of the boonies as that cleared place in the middle of nowhere where you have a few neighbors so that wasn't me. Middle of the woods, no neighbors, at least not close ones. But I lived near the ocean my first 8 years of life. I'm def. a small town country girl.

I sure do live in the country. I am afraid that it is not as secluded as your daughter has it though. We are on ten acres but have 3 immediate neighbors.
I would love to live in the real boon docks!

I am a country girl at heart, we do live in the burbs. It was quite rural when we bought out here but now there are many more homes but still very woodsy with several farms nearby, not us however.

Uhm... no, I am not a girl, nor do I live in the boonies, pains... although the city I live in might be described by some as the boonies! (That's how Pretty described it when she came home from college after her freshman year. She went to college up by New York City... )
I would describe this city as Podunk City... LOL!

I changed the wording so guys could answer too..I've lived in a few Podunk's, actually I live in one now but i call it a small town. Its touch for our kids to be in college in a city and come home to small town, no excitement there...
