A homemade Christmas present to warm more than hearts.

After some deliberation I decided to make heat bags for a couple of my closest friends. One has permanently cold hands and the other suffers with rheumatism so I think the gift will be welcome. I bought 1 kilo of wheat for each bag. Dried it out in the oven, very important this step because if it is not dried out it will make the bag wet when it goes into the microwave. I made two bags, one to contain the wheat and the other as a cover. I finished off the top by hand so that it could be easily removed and washed if required. I cut the material into a square 44cms which I doubled to make into a rectangle. I prefer a longer bag because I can wrap it across the back of the neck and overlap on to the shoulders. I placed half the wheat in the bottom of the inner bag and then sewed across the middle before adding the rest into the upper half. This stops all the wheat falling down one end. It requires 3 minutes in the microwave to produce a pleasantly hot bag. In the summer it can be put into the freezer which will turn it into a cold bag. I use mine all the year round. They last for years.

What a great idea, for a gift, it would be one that I would appreciate on several levels. One I would love it because of what it is and does. Two I would love it because it had been personally made for me by a friend. Three because the friend thought about what would give me pleasure. So this Christmas present would be a winner all round.

For all of those reasons, I would love it, too.

That is an excellent gift for your friends. I have one bag like this and use it all the time as I have Raynaud's syndrome and my fingers are always cold. Very useful. I am sure that your friends will appreciate this thoughtful gift made by you.

I have used rice bags for heat. When my first husband was ill and requested to go to the nursing home I made these for him. At that time they were "unheard of" but also were well accepted. Wheat or rice either one, I love them.

They are quick and convenient provided there is a microwave in the nursing home to heat it up.

Very thoughtful gift. We have used rice in our warmers before but never wheat. Interesting filler.

I have one of those, but it's only a store bought one. That's a really good idea to sew it across the middle, - mine does fall down one end. I'm sure your friends will love them.

I've never examined a store bought bag so I am surprised to learn that they do not sew across the middle.

How interesting. And they last a long time. Much cheaper than the hand warmers I buy when I do out ice fishing.

My daughter gave me some hand warmers once but they were too small to stay hot long enough to warm my hands.

These make great gifts. I had one that was gifted me by the owner of our local Curves. When I strained the muscles in my neck and shoulder she gave me one that was made with rice. It was so helpful.

That sounds like the perfect gift. I wonder how well that would work as a neck warmer.

My version works well enough to wrap across the neck and the shoulders, so the back of the neck is warm. I suppose a long skinny one would keep the neck warm all round, but it might be rather bulky.

This is a very good idea. I have one bag that I received last year as a gift. It warms up in minutes and last longtime.

The joy of it is that the only sewing is in straight lines! Have ago, you could do it if you tried.

These are great. I have several and the longer one is good for around my neck. It is important to dry out the wheat as you say. I think occasionally one catches on fires in the microwave.

I've never kept mine in longer than 3 minutes and I've never heard of one catching fire. It is important for all the material to be cotton however,.

@41CombedaleRoad I know they banned them from our nursing home because of safety issues but some of the carers don't have too many clues. They have some other sort of heat bags there now. I like the smell of the wheat ones.

Such a great idea! My nan would love something like this actually. Her hands are forever getting cold. They get so cold they literally turn blue.

All you need is a pet shop selling wheat or a grocery shop selling rice and you can make your nan happy.

@41CombedaleRoad I will have to give this a go. Even if I don't make it in time for Christmas, I would just like to try and help warm up her hands. Thanks for sharing this!

That's such a thoughtful gift! I have used those bags before and they are very helpful. It sounds as if you've thought through all the parts to make it the best it can be. I love the idea of a removable cover.
