My Spirit of Christmas Presents is Late

Things are looking up. I should be feeling very merry and the truth is that the Christmas spirit is sneaking up on me albeit a bit late. It was very pleasant to light the tree this morning while waiting for the coffee to brew. It was just dark enough to enjoy the lights whilst standing at the window, enraptured by the layer cake the sunrise and the clouds created in the sky. Fluffy layers of cloud cake, separated by deep rose-colored icing. But the presents are a bit sparse. The tree went up just last week and sat unadorned for days. I have been adding a string of garland here, some beads there, the odd snowman or crocheted snowflake. I still have a box of ornaments and such sitting by the tree, but they seem superfluous. It's a minimalist tree. It's perfect and The Feng Shui is with us. I think it's done. Except underneath. It looks empty. I have a couple of gifts to place there but that's all. The Girl wants money. She's trying to put together an adult life and that takes lots of funds. But the Working Girl has been busy buying gifts. And The Boy spent yesterday raking leaves to make money and plans on Christmas shopping, too. It's a new phase of life. The one where I give up being Santa. I stop being Chief Gift Procurement Officer and take the place of lowly recipient. I have always felt a little uncomfortable with accepting gifts. I am more of a buyer than a receiver. But I have to accept that I am old and so is my Christmas spirit. We're both tired. And this morning I recommend we read a little TS Eliot. The Journey of the Magi. It fits my mood somehow, my transition from the old dispensation.

On the bright side, give it 10 years or so and you will be buying toys again and the fun will be back!!

its not always that easy - sometimes the children take their children and spend it elsewhere. Things change

gotta accept with grace, and can always find small cheap presents that dont cut into the money you give them. if that helps

Post Christmas I want to say my spirit was lagging in many ways. Christmas came anyway. Next year will be different though. I am starting homemade presents for all this next week. Other things are afoot as well.

That is a bleak T.S. Eliot poem. There was not much under our tree until the kids arrived with their packages...They still hold on to the feeling of Christmas, sharing time and gifts with each other. Our kids got cash...so they could use it in what ever way they want...I think it was the warm weather, its hard for me to think Christmas when the roses in the back yard were blooming in Canada.

I hope the tree got its ornaments, and the presents found a place beneath and you had a wonderful Christmas as you received instead of gave. Christmas is a wonderful time of year. That was a different kind of poem. I hadn't read it before.

We have not a lot of gifts under the tree, but just enough to feel the Christmas spirit.

I'm a gift giver too and find it difficult to accept gifts. If I didn't have grandchildren my tree would probably be a bit bear under it too.

That's some pretty good poetry writing right there. Not quite as desperate as Yeats's The Second Coming. But still quite dark.

Funny, if getting old means you are now the gift recipient, then someone needs to tell my family.

I don't think I will ever lose my Christmas Spirit. Well, I hope anyway.

It does constitute quite a culture shock to suddenly find that your role has been reversed, but this the natural cycle of life.

Thank you for sharing this T S Eliot poem. He writes succinctly and his message is always so clear. I can see it all happening in my minds eye. Life is changing for us all, you know have a different but still important role to play.

There is very little under our tree also, but I don't feel that this symbolizes my Christmas spirit. We look forward to spending time together as a family, which we will do, and we have the gifts all bundled up in boxes to make it easier to pack them into the trunk. Merry Christmas, enjoy your lights and you sip your coffee.

Our gifts are lighter too here also. I have lost that spirit a long time ago.

I think that to be happy we have to learn to adapt. Thanks for giving us the T,S,Eliot - I hadn't read that one before.
