A whole day of rain in Northern California

It started raining yesterday afternoon, rained through the night, and is still raining as I type on Monday morning. This one has been more of a "Seattle-style" rain--slow and steady. It's perfect, because it's the kind of rain the ground should be able to absorb. I'll attach a picture of a "grove" of my little Christmas trees, out on my balcony, that haven't been given away yet. How is the weather where you live? I'm really glad we're finally getting some sustained rain here in Northern California.

It was raining lightly when I went out earlier, but rather than take the chance of it getting heavier while I was on route I chose to take a taxi to the local precinct. My plan was to visit the market and Asda, then catch a bus to the city centre and travel home from there via Metrolink tram. The rain soon became much worse and I totally threw the towel in and caught a taxi back home instead.

@Asylum Where is your favorite place to go to get away from it? I lived in a semi-tropical paradise for awhile (Santa Barbara CA).

@TheHorse Yes, we need rain, it's 52 days that it's not raining, it can become a problem.

@LadyDuck As Winter sets in, will the rain turn to snow?

Monday morning? Oh, last Monday. Whew, thought I had lost a day (since I am reading this on Sunday). We had the same type of day last Tuesday in SoCal. Must have taken the storm that long to travel down the coast.

@TheHorse It is coming gently, which is good. Once the soil is no longer hard pan, the rain will soak into the soil and not run off causing flooding. Fingers crossed.

We have rain here in the uk at the moment too. Some parts of the country have been flooded.

@TheHorse yes, one place had been flooded 3 times in 2 weeks. Several feet of water in houses and restaurants.

That sounds like a lovely rain. Generally when it rains here, Alberta, it is a storm with wind etc. That's why no one owns umbrellas.

Oh, umbrellas would just get turned inside out or blow away?

@paigea When the storms come up the canyon at our cabin in Montana, they're usually really violent, but they often pass through quickly.

@TheHorse Yes, they are useless in our storms and we rarely get a gentle rain.

I always say that I miss San Diego but one of the things that completely sucked was when there would be a light shower and the roads / freeways would get super slippery. It was like trying to drive on ice sometimes. People always say that SoCal drivers are clueless about driving in the rain (which is partly true) but if they only experience it a couple times a year when they are driving then you can't expect them to master it

I'm always cautious on the roads when it first starts raining. N. Cal drivers tend to be a bit angry, but they're not that bad overall.

Weather is fine where I am. Windy, grey, rainy and some snow now and then. More rain this time of year than is usual. It seems more like spring weather than winter.

So glad to hear that you are getting rain that will not lead to flooding! I hope it continues. We had temps in the 70's last week then it got cold and now Christmas day is going to be 70+ degrees again here in NC. We will be having a flip flop Christmas!

Sounds exciting. Reminds me of Atlanta, where I sometimes spend Christmas with friends. Could be 70 one day, and lightly snowing a few days later.

Southern California was raining also! Nice to see rain since we are in a drought! However, drivers do not know how to drive....

Yes, I'm happy. It feels like it's rained more in the last month than it did in the previous year, but I'm not sure what the numbers are.

@TheHorse Locally, we have had about 7 inches of rain in December. Average is 12 inches. We still have some time to go, and there is plenty of rain in the forecast, so maybe we will make our average.

Yesterday we had the "wintery mix" of rain and snow all day. It was a light rain and snow though. Today, it has been pounding down all day long. I had to go out and clear the leaves out of the trenches around one of our outbuildings, otherwise it will flood.

@TheHorse Oh, not too long, I just had to rake the leaves out of the trenches. It took maybe a half hour, but I did have to to it in the rain.

I haven't heard any reports of serious flooding. Perhaps a few low-lying lanes or roads temporarily closed, but not much more than that.
