A piece of the Berlin Wall

A piece of the Berlin Wall standing in Cape Town

I was never around in Germany to see the Berlin Wall for myself - standing solid and cold but I have visited Germany recently and I absolutely loved it, loved the food, the people and the beautiful countryside and cities. On my travels a week ago to our Mother City, as Cape Town is called, I accidentally came upon a piece of the Berlin Wall in St George's square (or as it is called today - Mall) Well I was dumbfounded and on my return to the Hotel, I told the girls about it and was almost called a liar. Well together after breakfast we meandered again to the Parliament Gardens and St George's Square where they got to lay their own eyes on the piece of Berlin Wall. According to research: "A New Treasure for St George’s Mall – a piece of the Berlin Wall" St George’s Mall has landed itself a new treasure in the form of a big chunk of the famous Berlin Wall which was given to former president Nelson Mandela in the 1990s." When we uploaded it on our FB so many of our friends in CT didnt even know of its existence. Its great to be a tourist in your own country. Do you know if there are any other pieces of the Berlin Wall anywhere else in the world?

I am sure there are plenty of pieces all over the world. I never made it to Berlin, I am from Bavaria in southern Germany. I did have relatives in the east sector that I only saw once when I was little..

Oh how wonderful to know that you are from Bavaria - I visited a few small little places there last year as well as Triberg - That wall carries a lot of history and heartache for the German people as well.

I haven't heard of any other pieces of the Wall being in other countries. It must have been quite a shock to see it in Cape Town.

No chance that any Indian owns it leave alone the country. But I don't understand why anybody would want to own that either. I mean, many were killed while trying to cross from east to west, right? That wall is a sad thing then. Why would anybody want a piece of that misfortune?

It has a PEACE inscription which i did take a photo of - if you open you can read. I believe it should be a reminder of the misfortune that makes it so necessary.

I didn't know that there were big pieces like that in other countries. A friend of mine was in Berlin when the wall came down and when she returned home she brought me a small chunk of the wall. I've still got it lying around somewhere, but I'm not sure where.

Of course there are pieces of Berlin walls around the world. Wikipedia has the full list. In Italy it's near the city where my Mom was born. We do not have a piece of the wall here in Switzerland.

@Inlemay I suppose that they do not want to show a sad and shameful piece of history.

I was so fascinated, and loved it knowing something that half the country didnt know. The girls say I walk the streets looking for new things - I literally do.

I think there's a piece in David Hasselhoffs leather jacket. Seriously, though, that is a fantastic thing to find. And very unexpected I would think
