I've been banned from oven-roasting turkey

The day before Christmas, I bought a small fresh turkey that was marked down to 50% of its original price. I finally got around to cooking it today, and opted to take the 'lazy' way out instead of roasting it in the oven like I normally do. So into the slow cooker it went, with a liberal dusting of several spices that I picked at random mostly because they sounded good this morning. It cooked all afternoon, and smelled so good that the kindergartner started asking me to try it a few hours before it had reached the proper temperature. She was so thrilled with it when I finally carved it that she's informed me that I'm no longer allowed to cook a turkey any other way. I guess this means I'll have even more room for side dishes and pies next Thanksgiving...

I have never cooked a turkey in a slow cooker. but I beef and pork roasts in them all the time. They always come out great.

I do pork roasts, too, and occasionally chops. I love the way the onions get when they're cooked for hours...

@paigea I buy a premade one, but I'm not sure it's available in Canada since it's a Safeway store brand. I think it's the Safeway Selects orange sauce. Panda Express sells theirs bottled, too, and there are quite a few recipes for homemade ones online. When I do the orange chicken, I just cook it in the sauce until it's falling off the bones, then serve it on top of medium grain rice.

@yukimori Well, that sounds like a good place for me to start. What sauce do you use for the orange? Is there a sauce I can just buy?

@yukimori I will see if Safeway has it here; if they don't I will find a recipe. We don't live near any Panda Express. Thanks.

I have had at least one other friend mention putting a turkey in the crock pot. I have put chicken in my crock pot and that is awesome.

It honestly never occurred to me until I was in the store that afternoon. One of the butchers was putting out turkeys, and he got to discussing ways to prepare them with another customer. She turned down the turkey I picked out because it was too big for her cooker... it fit perfectly in mine, so I was happy! I'm definitely going to use it the next time I cook a chicken. It's just so much more convenient than the big roasting pan I've been using.

That sounds so good, and easy to do too. I haven't got a slow cooker, but I might look out for one.

It was. I think I spent maybe 10 minutes on the prep work this morning, and that was only because I had to find something to occupy the toddler to keep her out of the kitchen while I was setting everything up. There's an amazing variety of good slow cooker recipes out there, too.

Happy New Year to you, too! We still have about four hours to go in my time zone... and I'll probably be sound asleep when the boot drops.

@mike197602 the trick is not to add too much liquid as none is lost during the cooking!

It was really good... the kindergartner actually doesn't care for meat all that much, so the fact that she ate everything I gave her tonight was a pretty great endorsement.

Oh, this is a positive ending, I though you made something wrong with the oven.

Not sure I would care for crock pot turkey - the smell of a turkey roasting in the oven is pure heaven to me. I'm a 'regular' cooker not a fan of slow cooking or fast cooking. I used a crockpot about six times in the last few years.

Like @TheHorse I thought you had a disaster, I am glad everyone liked it better. Aren't slowcookers the bomb?

You either have a huge crock pot or it was a very small turkey?

pot pies make a good use of leftovers and they are easy to make and you can freeze them and just pull one out and reheat it.

I thought from your title that you had had a disaster. Far from it!
