Cutting my own hair

Finally, I have cut my hair yesterday. It's very hot here, and having short hair makes me feel more comfortable.
I started to cut my hair on my own since last year. I was inspired by a Bubblews member. I didn't think I would do this, or even try to do this, as I always thought cutting hair is very challenging.
I have been cutting my son's hair since he was born, as he doesn't like to go to the saloon to have his hair cut. Then my husband also asked me to cut his hair for him. So, I think it might be good for me to just cut mine, to save money and also I don't like to wait in the saloon. Anyway, I just want a very simple and short hair. Moreover, I can have my own haircut anytime whenever I want, it's convenient.
Have you tried to cut your own hair or cut hair for others? How often do you get your hair cut?

@ivyparkgirl You are lucky to have your mother do it, and it doesn't cost you anything.

When I was a young teenager I followed the instructions in a magazine and cut my hair the same length all over. I think it was about four inches. I curled it under, ratting it like crazy and then sprayed it with Aqua net.

That's cool! I don't know why I never dare to do that when I was younger. I admired those hairdressers as I thought it could be so challenging to cut the hair, and how they dare to cut others' hair. Once I tried it, it's not that difficult that I thought.

@kaka135 ...The cut I did was easy. What get me is how they do some of the more involved cuts. How they know how the hair will lay when they are done. Takes experience.

I have tried cutting my own bangs once. Surprisingly I liked how it turned out. I have this side swept bangs and because my hair is longer the style was not what it once was. And I am too lazy to go to my hairstylist just for a trim, so I watched a youtube video on how to trim your bangs. I am glad it turned out okay and I like it but I do not think I will do it myself again. I was able to get away with it being uneven but I do not think I can do it with the rest of my hair.

It's good that you cut your own hair and your husband's as well. Now I am thinking perhaps you are the one who inspired me to cut my own hair! Sorry, I just couldn't remember.
Though I am not cutting my hair nice and neat, sometimes the hairdresser didn't cut it neatly as well, so I think it's fine to just cut it myself. Moreover, since my husband also has the courage to ask me to cut his hair for him, so I think I should be courageous as well.
Now, hair cutting seems to become a family activity in my home.

@TiarasOceanView I am not, but when my hairdresser left, I tried several and I was never happy with the result, not to mention that they were all pretty expensive. I remembered how my hairdresser used to cut my hair, so I tried, I never changed my style since then.

My husband was the one who encourages me to cut the hair for everyone in the family. Perhaps my children are still young, and they don't really mind what hair style they are having at all. I always thought girl's hair is easier to cut. I am not sure yet, as my little girl's hair is still very short, so it's easy to manage.
My mom cut my hair until I went to college as well. Actually some of my friends laughed at my hair during high school, but I just didn't care about it. Now I think perhaps I have better skill than my mom, as no one else mentions about my hair so far.
My mom still cut the hair for my elder brother, though he's almost 40. He doesn't like to go to saloon at all since he was young. He had bad experience with the hair cutting in the saloon.

My hairdresser works on her own and her prices are less than half of those in the saloon. When I went overseas I didn't want to chance going to a foreign hairdresser as I hate my hair at the best of times. So it hasn't been cut since about May 2015. I am going to keep it longer but will make an appointment soon for a trim.

i would probably have a haircut before going away. but most women here have their hair straightened (called rebonding) before leaving.

I think you have more experience to cut hair. I can only cut my fringe since at least I can cut it easily. I can't cut my rest hair as it will be too difficult for me. Long time ago I tried to cut my dad's hair for a few times. I dare not to cut anybody's hair after that. I don't think I am good at it. If I cut my own hair, at least nobody will complain about me

Yes, I agree with that, nobody will complain about my hair if I don't cut it nicely.
I started to have the courage to cut my own hair since my husband asked me to cut his. I think since he is working and facing clients, and he still dared to ask me to do so, so I should have the courage as well. Most of the time I am just staying at home, or meeting neighbors and my children only. I found that no one else cares about my hair at all.
How about your son's hair? Does he go to saloon to have his haircut?
My son didn't want to go to saloon at all, even when we went and asked him about it, so I had to cut his hair on my own, even though I was no experience at all. He's my first guinea pig.
He gave me lots of courage to cut the hair as well, as he doesn't care how I cut his hair.

@youless I am never an artist too! I remember when my son was young, his hair style was quite funny. After some time, my mother-in-law told me my hair cutting skill has been improved. She must not like the previous hairstyle, but she just didn't complain.

That is awesome you could cut your hair and for your son/husband also! Do you cut trim your daughters hair also? I have never tried to cut hair, but I don't think I have talent in hair. I can hardly cut paper straight.

Yes, I trim my daughter's as well. I am glad my children don't have thick hair, so it's actually easier to cut theirs. My daughter's hair is very short and still not much yet, so I just need to trim a bit. I used to think it's easier to cut girl's hair, but with more practice with my son's hair since he was born, I think it can just apply to same method to cut for all of us. I am still learning to use the hair cutter, it will be easier and faster to cut boy's or man's hair.
I never thought I could do this either. Perhaps our hair are all straight, so it's easier to cut, and we all have simple hair style.

@infatuatedbby Yes, the thin hair get dried easily too. Mine is thicker, so it's good for me to cut my own hair, so I can always make it thinner and feel lighter on my head.

@kaka135 That is really good! I do not have thick hair also, though I kind of wish I did so it would look like I had fuller hair. But, thin is great for your climate where you live as it is hot.

So, you are a hairdresser? That's good.
I don't know why I always admire the hairdressers, I always thought it's very challenging to cut hair. Though I think it's not that difficult now, I still admire the hairdressers.
Yes, it helps to save cost and time too. I don't really like to wait for a haircut, moreover now I am always bringing two young children with me.

@kaka135 It is really just practice. Some are better than others of course like all professions.
I used to do it not now, but it never leaves you once you learn and to me the main issue is to remember it is always about angles, degrees of where you are cutting. Not hard once you get the hang of it.

maybe you had the two-way mirror so you were able to cut behind your hair.

I don't use two mirrors, as I am just too lazy to hold the other mirror. I just cut the hair at the back without looking at the mirror. I used my hand to "tie up" the hair at the back, and just cut it through. It's definitely not straight and neat, but it doesn't really matter to me, as long as it's short and I feel comfortable.
I use the mirror in front to cut the sides.

@ridingbet I actually don't know if others notice my hair, as no one asked me about my hair so far. It made me understand that actually no one would care about my look. It's only my husband told me my hair is not straight, but he doesn't really care either.

@kaka135 well, that is your choice, right? having your signature hair cut all by yourself. Once when I tried cutting the front part of my hair (fringes, or bangs), it was not straight; it was slanting. I had to clip the fringes and my forehead appeared wide.

I watched the YouTube video tutorials, and they always recommend to use two mirrors for cutting the hair at the back. I am too lazy to do so, I just use my hand to tie my hair (as mine is really short, if it's longer, then perhaps using a rubber band to tie the hair is better), and just cut all the hair below my hand. I want it to be as short as possible at the back, so I won't feel so hot.
I really just simply cut my hair, it may not be neat and nice at all, but when I look at it, I feel it's okay, so I just leave it. No one has asked about my hair so far, as I guess nobody else cares.
Yes, I think it's easier to take care of the hair when it's short, and save the cost on shampoo and time to wash and dry the hair as well.
If you are interested, you can look up the video tutorials in YouTube for "how to cut your own hair", you will get the idea and it's really not that challenging.

That's good. I think once we got used to it, it's just like an ordinary work. Now, I have the habit of cutting my own hair very often, as I'd like it to be short and light. Even though it's not too long, I'd like to trim a bit, so I feel it's lighter on my head.
It's too costly if I go out to ask a hairdresser to do this for me.

Sometimes I just cut my hair a few times until I am happy with it. I know mine is not neat and nice, but it doesn't matter to me now, since I can't see my back.
It'd be nice if someone can help us to trim the hair at the back. Sometimes I ask my husband to do so.
