Here we go, seven!!! Seven childhood memories

Like others I think I will share. It feels good to dredge some of this stuff up.
1. My grandmother on my mom's side always seemed to really love kids and was a lot of fun. I think she only visited when mom was losing a baby, but it does not overshadow the time that she came and I remember her letting me play in the water in the back yard. I made a huge mud hole and rolled in it. I must have been three. I do not remember her scolding me or anything.
2. A general and consistent memory I have is of the day after Thanksgiving or Christmas. On that day we ate whatever we wanted all day. I could have all the pie I wanted. Mom said her family doctor said it did not hurt to do that once in a while if we ate well the rest of the time.
3. I am four years older than my brother. I remember when he was born. I remember a lot of things. Dad got mom a box of chocolates in a plastic decorative box--it was pretty. Kids could not go up to the hospital rooms but I remember dad taking us to the grounds and mom waving down to my sister and me. When he came home from the hospital I remember the first time I got to hold him, how blue his eyes were and curly black hair. I sat almost perfectly still in the turquoise colored platform rocker.
4. I remember how beautiful my mom's french manicure nails were to me, a four year old.
5. Speaking of fingernails, when we would visit my grandparents grandma had a shoe box full of nail polish and manicure stuff we could use. It was kept behind the rocking chair in the front room.
6. It seems we were always given a giant peppermint stick at Christmas. In my memory it was about an inch in diameter and ten inches long. It lasted for a week it seems.
7. My mom did not really like my dad's family, but on occasion I could go spend a night there at their house. My grandma had a box full of little toys under the downstairs bed. I think they mostly came out of cereal boxes. She also let me play in the water one time when I had not brought a change of clothes. I had to wrap in blankets while my black and white checked dress with red trim and buttons dried on the line. I also learned about tiger lilies and played with roly polys (pill bugs) that I found at her house.
I tend to be over the top, so I may tell another seven another time.

I remember how long my mom's nail would get. I was in awe. Funny what kids find interesting.

That was how I felt after I had written my seven. I probably have seventy more I could add.

I wonder if I should put together a memory book just to share with my kids.

@Morleyhunt I wonder what my kids would remember and tell.

@GardenGerty I think the telling of them is sometimes enough, but since we are writing here anyway, maybe we could write the memories as a discussion, print a copy and keep a binder or file for the future.

These are all very good memories. I can appreciate your 2nd memory. Though we had a little bit more lenience on eating than our aunts and uncles, my grandmother did let us eat whatever we wanted the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas. I always spent these holidays with my grandparents.

When I did this I could easily have done a lot more too.
Your grandmother only visited when your mom was losing a baby? That seems strange if she was a loving person , not to visit more often. Did your mom lose a lot of babies? (I presume you mean miscarriages).
And are pill bugs live insects?

Mom lost four total. Mom was the oldest, some were even still at home when I was born and a small child. My grandmother and granddad had a small farm or ranch at least four hours away and grandmother did not drive. We visited them much more frequently. My Aunt and all my uncles lived in that area. Also we had a small very full house and not set well for company. Yes, pill bugs are actually a crustacean. I just went to the internet to learn more to tell you and learned that some people keep them for pets. They are fun for kids as you pick them up and they roll up into tight little "pills".

@GardenGerty That's quite understandable that your grandmother didn't visit too often as she lived so far away. Thanks for the explanation.
Also thanks for telling me about the bugs, I don't think we have them here.

Wow what great memories you had as a child. I had 3 brothers I spent all my time with. I was more of a tom boy than a girl that liked my finger nails painted.
I did this challenge a few weeks back. Is this a new one or the same one we did a couple of weeks ago and people are just now catching up on this one?

@GardenGerty This is wonderful and I like it. I had fun. But I could of gone on forever with some of the silly things my brothers and I did growing up.

They were good. I often would say that I was not a happy child, but you know, it did me good to dig around for these.

Nice memories GG.
It is amazing to me what we do recall.
We can surprise our own self with the things we can remember if we have the quiet time to do so.
All memories are special.

I have some bad memories, and was not sure if I could find good ones to share. I think this was a good exercise in being positive for me.

How about "woodlouse" it is the same. I always liked playing with them and watching them roll up. I guess in some Science labs they do experiments like putting them in a maze to determine if they are left or right handed. What our taxpayer money goes for!!

I cannot believe they spend money to know if the bugs are left or right handed.

Somehow I always had the impression my mom's mom actually got down in the mud with me. I have a lot of memories from when we lived in that particular house.

I'm sorry about your Mom losing the baby. :-/ I'm glad you do have other memories to look back on, like staying at your Grandmother's. I sort of remember doing the same, but I was little. I think I want to give this a try as well, maybe this week.

I expected to tell more of these stories too, but haven't yet.
I was reading of one done by AuntyLou and decided to follow a tag I provided in a comment to see if any new ones were about. Glad I found this one.
I remember being outside on a lawn at our hospital after my second sister was born. I wondered for a long time about that memory. I didn't think about the possibility that as children we weren't allowed near the rooms, but I'm sure that's why that memory is there.
My kids played with roly poly's, I don't remember seeing them as a child, but we played with tent worms/catapillars. A neighborhood friend collected a slew of them in canning jars, and a few of us let them crawl up our shirts. Years later, I had near nightmares dreaming of that and dreaming they'd infiltrated our house too.
Kind of odd that you didn't visit your dad's family on a regular basis. My kids don't know my husband's family all that well, but not because I don't like them, but because they live in PA and we're in MI.
Glad you joined the challenge. I'll see who all stopped by and suggest it to some that may have missed it.
