It's Fat Tuesday!

February 9, 2016 2:51pm CST
It's Fat Tuesday! And if you practice the act of sacrifice and penance during the Lenten season, this just might mean you are living it up today! I saw a funny meme on Facebook with Bill Murray sitting with a pile of all sorts of goodies in front of him. It said something like, "If you are Catholic, this might be you on Fat Tuesday." Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday which requires Catholics to fast and abstain for the day. It also is when people choose to give up things such as chocolate, coffee, alcohol, or Facebook. You can also add something such as extra prayers, charity work, reading the bible, etc. I'm kind of bummed because I do like to have a special sort of meal on Fat Tuesday and I can't today. My daughter has an activity which puts us out of the house all evening. I'll make something simple that the rest of the family can eat without us. So no "Fat" feast tonight. I still haven't decided what to do for Lent. I might give up Facebook. Do you observe the Lenten season?

I might quickly take up FB so I can give it up! That shouldn't be too painful.

I made pancakes this evening (as is proper on Pancake Day) and filled them with smoked mackerel, soft cheese and horse-radish sauce. I don't celebrate Lent (or I haven't felt the need to do so for a long time) but I may try to give up buying things I don't need from Charity shops!

@celticeagle Idaho is probably about the furthest you could get from a fresh source of mackerel and I don't know how available smoked mackerel is in the US. It's rather stronger and more oily than smoked salmon (and it's a greyish-white meat rather than pink). The pancakes I made were made from buckwheat (something I hadn't tried before) and had a more nutty, earthy flavour than the ones I usually make with wheat flour. They were ideal with the smoked fish and would be excellent with smoked salmon, too, or, indeed, with fresh poached salmon.

@owlwings ...I have had canned mackerel and didn't care for it. Very oily and strong flavored. I have had buckwheat pancakes before and they are rather tasty. I'd go for salmon anything. We are famous for salmon around these parts. Yum! Can't get enough. Fresh, poached salmon. Now we're talking.

@jillybean1222 I am strong in my faith but being Lutheran I have never done anything specific about Lent. Just never thought about it. Basically we eat everything as usual but we might not eat as much and stick to smaller portions. Never gave up anything but it is something to think about.

I observe the Lenten season but don't really give up anything any more. I have enough sacrifice in my daily life to probably get my to heaven on an express pass

No, I am over 60, so I am no more obliged to fast. For the Roman Catholic Church the lent has to be observed by people from 18 years old up to 60.

I'm not Catholic so I don't observe the Lenten season but I know a lot of people who do.

I think we so misuse it nowadays, like people don't realize the issue is not to sacrifice and safe it for the next day but to share instead
