'All-you-can-eat' buffet being sued for not sticking to their slogan

The Golden Corral is a buffet restaurant, their claim to fame is you can eat all you want. We have eaten at several Golden Corral locations over the 15 years we lived in the south. We have gone back for seconds, but never thirds, fourths or more. A man in Massachusetts, 51 years old and very overweight from his photo (see photo in the link) is suing the Corral for 2 million dollars. He claims they didn't let him eat all he wanted. They didn't mention his weight, but from the photo he appears to be at least 500 or more pounds. I can't stop laughing - this man was at the restaurant for more than 7 hours and they estimate that he ate somewhere between 50 and 70 pounds of food. Can you imagine? How can one person eat that much food in 7 hours? I wonder if this is some kind of joke. Golden Corral wanted to settle with him but being the 'greedy' person he is he rather go to court where he thinks he'll get a better deal. All I can say is see you in court - I don't think this guy has a leg to stand on. Link for photo:

Ew I cannot imagine eating that much food in one day! I would be extremely sick. I don't think he has a chance of winning either. People are so sue happy these days it is insane.

It may seem an outrageous claim against the company, but he is right that they have broken the agreement. The restaurant made the claim in their slogan, so they should be obliged to stand by it and consider such instances to be unfortunate.

@AbbyGreenhill Their defence should be that they were becoming concerned that he may not be able to get through the door when they were due to close.

@AbbyGreenhill He does not look as though he should have been able to walk to the restaurant in the first place. I wonder how he got there?

You can make good choices with the selection of salad fixings, bread, fruit, vegetables, fish, and poultry. If someone chooses the stuff brimming with excess calories, grease and salt, then that is their choice.

@akalinus Even salad is high calorie if you load it with a ton of salad dressing. He wasn't too concerned about calorie - how could he be eating 70 pounds of food.

going to start making restaurants limit people to like 2 hours on buffets or something

They need to set some kind of limit just to protect themselves from people like this guy.

I'm sure there are people who stuff themselves so much at these buffets that they eat until they get sick

He's suing as he wasn't allowed to eat all he wanted. If he was allowed to do so and had a heart attack I expect his family would sue them for letting him eat all he wanted He is right in a way and maybe they should do what some unlimited internet companies do and put in a fair usage disclaimer

Yes, @Mike197602 - you know they would sue the rest. if that happened. He could bump into someone in the line and kill them...so many things could have happened.

Wow thats a lot of food to eat in 7 hours. But then again, its the buffets fault for not putting a time limit. Now they will learn their lesson and it's all you can eat in X amount of hours.

A 'normal' person can't eat that much - they would throw up long before they finished 70 pounds.

If that's their claim to fame, the restaurant can't stop him from eating. Obviously, he can't stop himself from eating either.

I think they better amend it to say all-you-can-eat up to 50 pounds a day.

@AbbyGreenhill Or, twenty pounds or five trips or some stipulation for those wanting to push for more.

Seven hours? Surely they could have asked him to leave at some point. I can't imagine sitting in a restaurant for seven hours, just eating. He does sound a little mentally unhinged, which makes me feel a bit sorry for him.

@AbbyGreenhill I think that the servers discreetly monitor how much the diners are eating. They don't have a problem with extra helpings but I think they would report someone like that guy to the manager.
