cooking oils

At my home there are several cooking oils. My mom cooks with either peanut or corn oil. But I think mainly she uses peanut oil as it smells better. I will use the olive oil to make pizza. And when I cook steak, I will use the butter. In the past my sister-in-law gave me the grape oil but I didn't find the difference between it and other oils.

I used vegetable oil in our daily cooking and sometimes, we used olive oil but we usually used the vegetable oil because it's cheaper compared to olive oil.

Yes, the olive oil is expensive but today there is the tea seeds oil and it is much more expensive. I wonder whether it is as so healthy as it claims.

@youless I think so too, as I don't have to use oil that way. The cookware I use is ceramic non stick, and it is great.

I prefer to add the oil after the cooking as then I don't destroy the nutritive value.

It depends on what you want to cook, oils with high smoke point is good for deep frying so it becomes like restaurant food especially when cookin oil with pressure, olive oil we usually use for healthy foods like salad, low smoke point like butter and margarine to saute like garlic for lemon butter sauce Choice of oil depends on what you want to cook ( health risks not taken to account)

If we want to be healthy, perhaps we shall only steam the food without oil at all

@youless but that food will not have the spicy taste. The spices need oil to cook properly.

We have different type of oils. One is peanut oil, coconut oil, olive oil for cooking. There are few other types of oil but they depend on the type of food prepared.

Now it seems many families will have a few different oils at home. In the past we might just depend one kind of oil only.

In Kerala. Only coconut oil is used for cooking. I find it little difficult to adjust to food made in coconut oil.

Moreover doctors believe that we should keep changing food oil once in a while. Getting stuck to only one kind of food oil is not recommended.

In India people mainly use 3 types of food oil depending on their requirement. It is either groundnut or soya bean or sunflower oil. In some states like Bihar, they use mustard oil for deep frying. Sesame oil is used in certain places. The rich class uses olive oil which is costliest of all. Nowadays due to its lighter density rice brawn oil is also used extensively. As far as my own house is concerned, we have mainly used groundnut oil and sesame oil for cooking food. I would like to deep fry vegetables or give a tadka in Ghee.

I try not to use oil at all. If I fry things, I tend to dry fry them or, occasionally, use 'Frylight' which comes in different styles and is sprayed so you just coat the pan. I used to use vegetable oil because I was under the impression that it was better than other things and I don't like olive oil. According to some sources, no fats and oils are better than any other anyway. I don't mind a little bit of oil just to coat the pan but I don't like it when, as some restaurants do, the food is swimming in it.

@youless I used to use this alternately with olive oil until I read it is not healthy because the oils are usually extracted in factories using an industrial process that involves high heat and various chemicals… which includes the toxic solvent hexane.

Depends on what we are cooking. We have vegetable oil for heavier cooking and olive oil for sauteeing and such.

I use olive oil for pastas, garlic bread and salad dressing. Otherwise it's sunflower oil. But a lot of our Chinese dishes here contain pork lard.

The scientists found that perhaps the animal oil is healthier than the vegetable oil. I don't know. It seems the trend can change anytime.

It can be good to do some research, what oils can be heated without destroying them. Or one can just use water and add.the healthy oils just before eating the food.

I seldom use mustard oil since it has a very strong and spicy flavor. But it can match with the hot pot food.
