Can people see you coming?

Our son collects Nike sneakers. He knows absolutely everything there is to know about them. Once he thinks you're interested he shares all his knowledge until your eyes glaze over. He knows all the employees in all the Melbourne Nike stores and has been known to help people with their choice of shoe if all the customer service people are busy. We visited him at Christmas and I loved the red sneakers he chose to wear on our last day there. I've always loved red shoes. But I wonder what it is that drives people to have such a passion about a particular subject. We have many passionate people on MyLot. Some love their gardens, some love speakers, others love quilting. Do you have a passion and can you explain what it is that drives you on a particular pathway?

I love plants.. I can talk all day about them and hang around my garden all day. My kids think I am mad.

My mother was passionate about her garden. I loved to help her especially as she got older. I would do all the heavy stuff. I know the names of quite a lot of plants but only through association with her. And I don't think you're mad.

@enlightenedpsych2 Some of the older people knew so much about natural remedies and such. It's a shame if that knowledge gets lost.

I love dancing and watching sport, and can make people sit through dance shows till they want to cry. Or talk sports till people want to run. @JudyEv , dancing puts a smile on my face and sport is about national pride. :-). What are you passionate about?

I guess it's animals and nature, in particular horses, although 'passion' is probably a bit strong. I think it is great that people ARE passionate about something. I'm just not sure I am. :)

I have never understood why people will pay the outrageous prices for such footwear. Collecting them has to be a serious expensive hobby.

@JudyEv I suppose that it amounts to a personal choice of whether you prefer to have the money or the item, which is a decision we all make on a daily basis.

It is although he does buy at sales and swaps with others. At one Swap Meet, someone bought the shoes he was wearing! He never has two bob to bless himself with but at 44 it's hard for us to say much.

@Asylum For all his faults, if he gets something for nothing (he sometimes gets dated merchandise for doing casual work for them) he always passes it on for nothing. I know there is a mother and three kids somewhere in Melbourne living from hand to mouth but all wearing Nike sneakers thanks to Bren. As you say, it's a personal choice.

Wow, that is something. My daughter loves shoes and collects them, but not any particular name brand. However, by your title and picture, I thought you were going to comment on his choice of shoes that are hard to miss and I was going to talk about my daughter and her hair. When she was in high school she had half her hair dyed black, the other half red, but that wasn't the color that really stood out, it was when she shortly moved out and she dyed her hair pink. We don't have a super large Walmart, but Walmart is pretty big, even the smaller ones. I was at one end and she had walked in the other end and I knew it was her. Plus she isn't very tall, yet that pink hair stood out. As for my passion, I guess I have two; dancing and writing. I can talk about both all day long and especially now with my foot problem, I can whine a little about not being able to dance right now.

@JudyEv It is, and I can handle it until music starts playing, then I struggle to not do anything to make my situation worse. Hope your pain is something minor, because sometimes just walking stinks.

@Carmelanirel2 I hurt one foot badly (can't remember which one even) many years ago. We were on holiday, had very little money and didn't do anything about. Eventually it came good. But I always wondered if one day I'd pay for it. Maybe I've just got a bit of arthritis.

@sueznewz2 I know how much they cost. I don't wear any truly expensive ones but even the 'cheap' sneakers are $70 and for a senior citizen that's a hunk of money!

Passionate is not a strong enough word. I am obsessed with music, cycling, and hockey. Whether this is healthy for me, who knows. All I know is that riding my bike gives me something positive on which to focus.

I say that my passion is crocheting, as I love making things for other people. i have made baby items mostly lately though, as there haved been several from my church who have had babies, so when I find out what they are having, I will crochet an item to match what it will be. I love it, as I have taught myself to crochet, and that was at the age of 18, and I am now 68, so it has been 59 years since I started. It is one pasion, that I hope to continue as long as I can.

@LadyDuck I can cook a nice meal but I don't go to a lot of extra trouble when serving. Like you, Vince likes his food to look really appetising. He chooses serving platters very carefully and adds garnishes and stuff. No wonder I don't mind doing the cleaning up! :)

I think many hobbies are pointless in some respects. What's the point of having a huge collection of anything? Unless you eventually sell it, it is money spent for no good reason other than that it gives you pleasure. So do you have a passion?

People is/are my passion. I want to know about people, what they do, what they like and so forth. My ideal job would be a helping type of job. I could enjoy going in Wal Mart and helping the little old people find and reach what they want in the store. I could work for a nursing home and sit with residents who had appointments. You might not get this from my discussions. You might think food is my passion, but I would say feeding PEOPLE is a passion. Not sure why, could just be my curiousity.

I think that's a great passion to have! People are so diverse and so interesting. Especially old people I think as they have some incredible stories to tell. I remember talking to a little old lady in a nursing home and she showed me her scrapbook. She'd been a ballerina! I nearly fell over. It shouldn't have surprised me so much but you just assume and presume and you can be totally wrong.

My son's passion is music, he plays almost all kinds of music instrument and so his room have all those instruments. I could not count anymore the number of his guitars, lately he bought a ukelele and this is the first instrument he would play as he arrives from work. I think when an activity makes you happy and makes you feel quite fulfilled, you develop a real passion on it.

What an odd thing to be passionate about! I never had much time for Nike because of their long association with sweatshop labour, although that situation has improved in recent years. @JudyEv - I have a box of war comics from the '70s which I've been re-reading recently. They'e dated so badly, but still fun. I don't read many superhero comics these days, but fortunately there are some wonderful comics of other types on the market these days.
