No 9 to 5 and they say Unemployed?

I don't work a 9 to 5 job and a lot of people think I am unemployed, despite working most days many hours each day. You tell them you work remotely and they stare like there's something wrong with your face. Can't people understand that the age of employment does exist outside a set time schedule and office hours?

I hear ya. People think just because I don't have a traditional job that I don't work. I hate it. I work for many hours of the day. A lot of people take advantage of my time because they think I have all the free time in the world because I don't have a traditional job. People just don't get it.

Eventually we need to break the traditional mindset. When you work for others in another setting you are a cog in that machine, trained to be used by them. Unless you are actively shaping things in your own way you are just helping others come to a larger profit. That's one reason why the economy is so out of order. There are so many replacement parts that it's easy to pick one over another and some never get picked.

@CoralLevang Sounds like something my brother might say! It's just a part of the changing world. The freedom to operate in a different setting than what was common before is just part of that. I guess people in this rural area still haven't grasped concepts like that fully. It might be easier to find in the city where the bigger companies would do something like that.

@CoralLevang Well I've been pushing the new era since I was in high school and my feelings haven't changed in the 15 years afterwards, so a few comments here and there won't change me otherwise. Any job I've have in that time slot I've grown to dislike. Pretty much because my productivity level between 1 - 3 goes down. You know what's different about the world from your generation and mine? Several billion people! No one factors population into it because it's a global population, but this is a global economy.

Sooo, you're referring to the meager earnings those of us online make that takes up so many hours of our days, right?

No, I'm actually talking about my job with a magazine where I help produce a product each month, adjust and work on a website for it, and manage the electronic communications and databases. I wouldn't talk about mylot, since I've only been paid $12 since I joined.

Well, you do get paid according to your level of interaction so if you got $12 in one month I'd say you've done good @OneOfMany butt I am not a hot shot with a magazine so I haven't a clue what kind of money you expect when you "work" online.

@rebelann It's not a lot, my boss isn't a good salesman. But it's still a job that I'm working. Of course, I need to up my personal projects, because those are worth doing. $12 from September to October, and no pay outs since. So not that great of a job here. :P

I get that and agree with you. How people work is changing so much these days and there is no reason anyone should work 9 to 5.

@OneOfMany tthe one aspect about work is that it hasn't caught up with the new reality of life.

It's funny hearing it from one person makes people like my parents consider I should be doing that work despite knowing how much I dislike that time slot.

@pgiblett The fact that we need to work more than people did in the past and get farther behind is showing us that we are misusing technology. If we used it correctly we'd be doing less and getting ahead faster!

No, people do not seem to understand. When I say that I worked as self employed all my life, people think that I did nothing. I worked most of the time more than 10 hours every day.

I feel like they won't get it unless I become wealthy from my efforts. I have the mental drive for that but for now I just do what I can do without burning out. It's common knowledge to those that strive for self-employment that they will be working longer hours than the office crew.

@OneOfMany Yes, I have worked all my life with my husband, we knew we had to work more hours, but we had freedom.

@LadyDuck Well I look at how much some people commute and rarely see their homes and how much I get done with work and projects around the house and property, and wonder why that isn't obviously better. I guess people have gotten used to being cogs in the machine.

I think that people are build with traditional mindset in terms of job and employment. You cannot consider someone unemployed just because he do not have 9-5 working hour schedule like them. But it is a fact that people might not consider the earnings through online job or other part time basis as a fixed source of income. I had one friend of mine , who used to work from home, as she was a online tutor for a particular organization. But many of our friends do not even consider her employed despite her earning almost the same like them. This is a traditional mentally with people and if we want , we can just ignore this.

@Shayani That's true. And there's always the fact that I manage hay sales from our barn that is outside here. We actually had to transfer several hundred bales from another barn last weekend because I've sold so much. It might not be office work but it's another form of work.

Yes, I'm sure that some of them are never working like mad until 3am to meet certain deadlines. Not all people function well for the 9-5 slot actually. I work better on paperwork and such when it's night. During the day I'm just not motivated for that type.

@OneOfMany It is always better to understand your ability and ways of dealing with it. When you are confident of doing like this, you better stick to it , and for all those who ever finds this unemployment , you can always have a option to ignore them.

I get told everyday that I do not work. Only if they knew. You have to be part of the mainstream workforce I guess. Not my fault the economy works the way it does and in turn trying to find alternate ways to support myself without depending on anyone but me.

Yet 'side' projects and incomes are often better than mainstream in terms of longevity. It takes longer to build them, but that's why they last longer. Office positions are very limited.

That's true people think of being unemployed if you don't work in a office. They don't know that today there are other ways too by which people earn by sitting at home. May you need to tell them.

Well they don't seem impressed when it's mentioned. I mean some feel that it's better to commute 2 hours to a job and rarely get to be home. But I can adjust my schedule and do other things with that 4 hours of driving them are doing.

For many years several in our family have worked online or elsewhere for themselves-no 9-5 for them! Especially since 2000 it seems there are many doing this-Thought it would be known about far and wide, but have seen that is not so. Try the expression 'Online contributor' as your employment.

I thought it would have been more accepted by now, but so many are stuck by ideas of the past. Not sure if online contributor would mean anything to them.

The nine to five concept of work is quite a contemporary idea, I would have thought. Back in the old days they worked according to the season and the light. I suppose the Industrial Revolution changed that, and work laws. I would also imagine that the majority of working folk don't work a nine to five job. Teaching staff, nurses, doctors, farmers, photographers, authors, leisure industry employees, security guards, hospitality folk, airline staff, etc. The nine to fivers' are probably the minority!

Yes, but I was just using that as an example. People understand the 9-5 reference. I guess the main thing was because I wasn't in the public eye, and that's why people judge.

My uncle actually told me that I don't work a normal job and that I should get a "regular" job. I so say now that I work a non-job to throw it back into his face. If you get paid, then it's a job. You should say that you are a freelancer, or independent contractor.

I used to say those things and people would reply "I hope you get a real job soon." There's just no getting to people with that mentality.

If they know your job that's probably different. In the end people all work different hours any more. It's hard to peg one person in any set role. If we all worked the same time slot the world wouldn't function any more.

It's when you have a job where the tasks are data oriented and your location doesn't matter as long as you get the job done. Basically I can work on what I need to from any place where I have a computer and the internet. Any of the work from home jobs are similar.

@BACONSTRIPSXXX A lot of the bigger companies are finding efficiency in having their employees only coming in to the office when absolutely necessary. A lot of people can get things done on their own time rather well.
