How do you get rid on an "ear worm"?

We played a "country" gig last night, but threw in a few "Irish" songs to give a nod to St. Patrick's Day. Our lead singer did a rather "operatic" version of "My Wild Irish Rose," and now I can't get the dang song out of my head. I can't say I particularly like the song, nor did I like his take on it. But there it is, playing way too loudly in my brain. Folks have called such a phenomenon an "ear worm" for years. So right now, I have an ear worm I have to get rid of or my Sunday is going to be miserable. How do you get rid of an ear worm when a Justin Bieber song, or perhaps "I am Woman" or "The Night Chicago Died," sneaks into your temporal lobes and won't leave?

I have never heard of an 'ear worm; and it sounds awful. What you do is put your ear phones on and listen to about an hour of your favorite music on You Tube. If that doesn't do it nothing will.

The phrase comes from the German "Ohrwurm":

Play something else. Either something extremely good, or a catchy pop song that's at least better than the one you have stuck in your head. (I recommend "Starry Eyes" by the Records.)

I haven't thought about The Records for years. Time to get over to You Tube.

@teamfreak16 -- that is a killer song, and much better to have stuck in your head for two hours!

Play a totally opposite music genre to get your brain and ear humming and thinking in a different way.

@TheHorse I forgot which song it was but when I still lived in NYC there was a song played often on the radio. Finally it hit my ear, my brain and I would hear it even if the radio wasn't on. Finally one night after two nights of torture I stuck cotton in my ears and lay down, closed my eyes and forced myself to think of nothing and go to sleep. When I woke up in the morning it was out of my head but you can believe me that for awhile whenever that song played I turned to another station.

It was to my advantage that @FourWalls went to a Gordon Lightfoot concert.

I read somewhere that an ear worm is caused when we do not know all of the words in a musical piece. So, if that is true, find the lyrics somewhere online, and it should go away. Works for me.

@TheHorse As long as they don't get stuck, and it works for you, then great. If not, then the Internet is always there to find the lyrics.

Why do you want to get rid of it in the first place? lol. I like Justin Bieber. Thank god, we have some songs that both of us do like...though I still rank your classical music to be really much superior to what passes off as music these days.

@TheHorse - It's by Marcia Griffiths, one of Bob Marley's backup singers. It's just awful.

Hey there By the Horse. In my experience, it takes time. If the "ear worm" is that bad, just listen to the song as much as you like. This helps to wear it down until there is something else that catches your ear more or you just loose interest for the moment. By the way, you can be in danger of trading one "ear worm" for another, if there are any other songs that you start to have grow on you. The most disciplined approach is to choose not to listen to the song, and avoid playing the song. Try listening to the radio. A variety of stations make the radio a good choose to listen to popular music, classic music, and sometimes mostly instrumental contemporary jazz. The later is great because it soothes and may calm the savage "ear worm".

It is either give in to the temptation and listen to the song even though you hated and loathed the artist or listen to a song that is catchier but something you actually enjoy.

As you suspect, I fear, the only way is to displace it with a different ear-worm:

And to repeat the process, as many have indicated below, this will do the trick:

I usually think of another song but then that just replaces the annoying ear worm. Good luck!

A Justin Bieber song might be gotten rid of with a game of Russian Roulette. Maybe listening to other music would help?

Try to listen a song that you consider as your favorite song. Maybe it helps get rid of ear worm.
