I forgot about the snake

Did that get your attention? It did mine!
At the nature center I leaned up against a retaining wall made of stacked rocks.
Slick as a whistle here comes a snake out from under it, across the sidewalk and under the bushes. I actually am not scared of snakes but this startled me.
I would say it was at least twenty four inches long. It looked to be black with yellow pin stripes. And it moved fast.
The snake was just as startled by me as I was startled by it. It got my heart rate up a bit.
Do you ever find that you have disturbed the happy home of a wild creature? Are you scared? Is it scared?

There were poisonous snakes at my grand parents, but I did not see them often at all. I did see chickens catch and eat them.

@jaboUK The larger chickens will eat the smaller snakes, and shrews and mice as well as insects. Free range chickens, that is.

Most people are scared of snakes. We call this snake a garter snake, but I can see that it could also be a ribbon snake. Long and thin and colorful stripes.

@GardenGerty We have black snakes very similar to those ones, they harm nobody, they eat frogs and small animals that they can find in the gardens.

Not had that kind of experience with snakes, and hopefully will not. But there was time when children were scared and were trying to ward off a street dog and suddenly, the dog stood up and put its paws on my shoulder. I was able to understand its plight, and shoo the children away. It was shocking, and scary but nothing happened.

I think certain people understand animals better than others. You helped that dog.

@GardenGerty ..the point is, how did the dog know I could help to prevent pelting of stones.

So true! One time i was walking my dog. The snake was sunbathing in the middle of the path. I do not have the greatest of eyes, but it just looked like a dry snake skin. I lean into to take a closer look and of course at the time my 100 pound German Shepherd wants to see what I was looking at. He takes a closer look also and that is when the snake jumped up and scared us both. It was just one of those snakes that eat field mice, but always gets you when something is alive and you think otherwise.

Exactly, that sudden movement is alarming. I was leaning up against this wall to look at the raised garden beds. The fast movement feels like an optical illusion.

I think you may have more snakes than we do. Best thing to do is to make sure it stays outside.

I am not scared of them, I am respectful, if I don't know what it is, I am dancing away and not touching it!

The snakes are perfectly welcome to have their own place and go their own way.

It was not intended at all to scare the snake, and I will not do it again real soon, unless of course one shows up in the back yard.

Even if a twig looks like a snake I will not go near it. Such is my fright and therefore you can imagine what I went through one early morning when I was opening the kitchen door there were two snakes mating. I banged the door shut and alerted the snake catcher who to our good luck was in town. The snakes had got inside our garden cupboard which was a bit ajar. The snake catcher arrived and caught them. He was to leave them in the jungle. It cost us quite a penny to engage the snake catcher

The onlytime I had probably caught up a snake was when I was a kid maybe in class four. There was this snake charmer who was displaying his tricks, and was telling again and again - I found this so very dangerous snake and caught it. I dont know what happened, but I stretched out my hand and held that snake in my fist. It gave me a bite to and seeing this the snake charmer put one of his magical anti-venom tablets (that was in black color) where the snake had bit.
Over the years, the wound has healed, but sometimes that feeling of holding a snake sends down shivers to me. Trust me, it was so odd a feeling... and decades after it keeps coming back. YUCK!

As a child I remember a snake going across our front step in the middle of the day. He was just going from one garden to the next.

He was a harmless type. I enjoy wild things when they keep their distance. He was definitely scared of me.

Oh yeah, several times @GardenGerty and they were snakes; which I hate. The last ordeal was when I was lifting a 70-pound bale of hay off the pile and standing vertical with it's mouth open was a Copperhead. I almost crapped my pants.
