Neodymium A Powerful Magnet

As many of you know my son is getting his PhD in Astrophysics. He has always been fascinated with science and math. He has taken some math classes he needs to get his PhD that I can't even pronounce. When he was still in High School he asked for some magnets for his birthday. I thought it was a strange request but it's what he wanted so it's what he got. He told me what to get and I have never seen such a powerful magnet. If you put these two magnets together you would never ever get them apart they are just that powerful. When storing them you have to put a block of wood between them. To show me how powerful these magnets were, my son took a piece of string and tied a paper clip to one end. The other end he tied onto a lamp. Then as shown in the photo I have here he put the two magnets on a piece of furniture about 10 feet away. You can see the magnets are sitting there with the block of wood between them. He held the paper clip up to the magnet and let go. The sting was stretched out to its full length and stayed suspended in the air with the paper clips not touching the magnet. Pretty amazing to say the least. He still has those magnets.

Keep them far away from your computers and also from your credit cards.

@fishtiger58 It's better to remind him that a strong magnet can wipe all the data on a hard disk.

That's pretty impressive. Our son is doing his PhD too but in Jazz Studies. It is a stressful time for them I think.

My son just told me they have heaped yet another assignment on him. He has to plan the events for the students the University is offering them into the Physics program. He has to plan the weekend the students are coming to see the school. As well they are sending him to Crete this summer for a Physics conference. He will have his Master's Degree this May and has a ton of research to complete as well.

I hadn't either until my son asked for it. It's pretty cool how that sting and paper clip just hung there in space.

@Drosophila He has to stay all summer as he is working on a research project for a couple of professors and that research project is what pays my son a salary. As well he also has research to do for his PhD. That will take years.

He is a pretty smart guy. I am proud of him but he has now been away from home for going on 6 years. I don't get to see him as much as I would like. But he has at least 3 more years of school to get his PhD.

I just thought it was so cool. I had to take lots of pictures. Abby mentioned a video of it and now I wish I had taken a video of it. I may have to have my son do this again for me.

How cool is that?!? My grandson, who is 6, has been interested in science and math for years, too. We're hoping he'll become a doctor as was his great grandfather.
