.Are "Brag Books" still used?

A Brag Book is something that grandparents carry around, if it is still in vogue to carry one. It contains photos, many photos, of the grand-kids, usually more than is necessary. It's called a 'Brag Book' because it's one way of bragging about the family. More often than not there are also photos of the big fancy home, the boats, the cars, the vacations, etc. Often people get tired of friends who constantly shove their Brag Books in their face. Enough is enough. That's wonderful that you love your family and you don't live in the poor house, but when it becomes just plain old bragging it gets rather annoying. It tends to turn people off instead of impressing them. According to Miriam-Webster: The simple definition of the word brag - * to talk about yourself, your achievements, your family, etc., in a way that shows too much pride

It seems that the physical brag book has been replaced by FB and Twitter.

True about FB for sure, I don't use Twitter much so I don't know about it.

I'd say Instagram might rank right up there, too.

I never heard of a brag book. That's a new one on me. I have seen people drag pictures of the grandchildren out of their wallets. We shared a table with another couple at a restaurant once. The guy got out a bunch of pictures of some terrible wreck they were in. All through dinner, we had to look at pictures of ambulances, tow truck, firetrucks, gurneys, splatters of blood, mangled cars and grievous injuries. I felt sorry for them, but that is not really what I wanted to see at dinner. We don't share tables anymore.

@miniam That's not a very nice thing to do at dinner, my goodness...I think I would have asked him to put them away.

@AbbyGreenhill ...You should take one of those gloomy rainy days and do it. If you don't the days will go by and it will never get done.

Unfortunately this is a practice that is still very popular and the social media help the braggers to expand their audience.

Yes, we are a captive audience. But we know how to remove ourselves from the situation.

I haven't carried pictures of my family around for a long time. They take up so much room in a wallet. Today, I see people showing pictures on their phones. I just have a simple mobile phone, so don't have pictures on it.

It seems to me that seeing pics on a mobile phone is much worse than looking through a book or a wallet. for a start it is impossible to see them in focus unless one is holding the phone and that is rarely the case. The phone owner holds the phone. He or she decides when the viewing can end and those phones hold a lot of photographs...

That's so funny because I came across the brag book from when I was a baby, just the other day. Someone got my mom a little brag book to put pictures of my sister and me inside. It has to be 30 years old. It was cool to go through it and see pictures I hadn't seen in ages.

I think it has been overtaken by the boast post now. This is the annual email sent at Christmas for the same purpose.

I used to get long brag letters at Christmas from one particular person - now that we're on Facebook together she stopped sending the letters.

I had a Brag Book when I was a kid. It was something that my aunt gave me to hold pictures that we took on a trip to the zoo... I think maybe the Reid Park Zoo? It was when I was like 4 or 5, so I don't really remember much about the trip itself, but I remember the pictures of the anteaters that were in the book. Aside from the one I had, and my aunt's, I'd never heard of anyone using them. I saw a few on sale at Walgreens recently, which was amusing since I tend to think of them as something rather 'dated.' (The ones I'm familiar with were made in the 80's.) These days, it seems like there's really no need for that sort of thing. A phone can hold a lot more photos than a small Brag Book would, and it's something most people carry with them wherever they go. Between that and social media accounts, there's pretty much an infinite amount of bragging material to be had for grandparents and anyone else who wants to indulge in the habit.

I think many grandparents use their smartphone as their bragbook these days. Wee pass our phones around to our friends. Or they use Facebook!!

@AbbyGreenhill I am one of those odd grandmas who never carried pictures of my grands in my purse. But with my cell phone if the need arises I have plenty available.

With digital cameras, they have become digital brag books. I have had people say to me, look at this picture I took of my kid or my dog etc. and they will take their digital camera out of their bag and show me. The pictures have not been deleted. They just sit there for the person to share when they want.

I think many simply share things on Facebook. I tend to take photos I think are cool, like the ones I share on here, but not really to brag.

I think since we can only do one photo it eliminates a lot of over - emphasizing here. Some on FB I only still friend since all the bragging they do makes me laugh my AO.

My Mum had a brag book with photos of the grandkids in it. I don't recall her ever bringing it out to show people. She never took it with her anywhere.

I would think that most people just whip out their phones to show pictures of kids, grandkids, etc. I doubt many people carry around that old "brag" book anymore.
