So What Was That All About?

Princess on my bathrobe

When I went to bed at eleven last night, Princess was sleeping in the middle of my side of the bed. Of course I woke her up, she had to move. Hubby had been asleep about an hour and a half and was snoring blissfully. I got into bed and within seconds I could hear Princess growling and hissing. Hard to see a black cat in the dark. She had pushed aside our double layers of black out curtains and was peering out the window and being very loud. We do have a neighborhood cat that is trying to claim a territory out doors. She will not come close to people but she is quite pushy with Princess. Hubby says "Oh, it could be a mountain lion" which creeps me out, and which I doubt. I am more inclined to believe his next statement "Well, it might be a bobcat.' I have not gone out to the driveway to look for tracks. I like to think it was a wandering domestic cat or dog. That was just not what I wanted to hear as I settled down to go to sleep.

You have mountain lions and bobcats in Kansas? I've never seen one other than on television or in pictures.

Bob cats for sure. Most regular people say there are mountain lions/pumas/panthers but the government says "no". However every state that touches Kansas says there are mountain lions within their borders, so how would there not be some in Kansas?

@GardenGerty I wonder if Wisconsin has any. I'll have to look.

Yes, I guess a bobcat would be less frightening to think about than a mountain lion. But, the latter is one you won't see even if it is around.

Exactly. Experts claim there are none in Kansas, but when I ran bus route the country kids could tell you where they lived.

I also would like to think it was just a wandeting dog or cat looking for something to get into.

It probably was a stray cat. Honestly I have not seen any stray dogs around here.

I have seen possums in our yard. I do not think she would growl at a bird.

@GardenGerty my cat used to chitter at birds, but those were small birds, if it was an owl or something large? not sure what she would have done

Cats usually act like that when their is a unknown presence around, could be an outside animal or a spirit

I guess though you are all safe indoors. I wouldn't like the thought of a mountain lion prowling around.

I really do not think there is anything in my yard that would interest a mountain lion. It was likely a stray cat.

@GardenGerty Hopefully Princess would keep very quiet if there were a mountain lion about!

Cats just love that particular position.

Yes, but she does not usually get vocal about the outside critters.

Oh, I would love it if that was the reason why Henry is so vocal at night, but it isn't. Henry (he's a Bengal kitten) doesn't like it when my boyfriend leaves electronics on when we get into bed. Henry knows that they hurt my eyes, and he wants me to sleep. So, he won't settle down and shut up until the electronics are turned off (usually by me after the selfish one finally falls asleep).

That is like the cat knowing when I should go to bed, even when I refuse.

@GardenGerty Yes. That's how Henry is. It's 7:15 pm right now, and he wants me to go to bed.
