I changed it after many years.

I had been using a 'baby face' avatar since I joined mylot. I did not feel like changing it at any stage (specially in the older version of mylot). However, some friends here on mylot pointed out that 'babies' are not considered seriously and their views do not count much and they further suggested that I should come out with my real avatar. I took their suggestions in the right earnest and decided to change my avatar. I hope that my views will be taken seriously from now onwards. I am happy to note that in the newer version of mylot many friends come out with their own pictures (avatars) and some of them keep changing their real pictures also in quick successions. Do you feel that we should keep changing our avatars and should we use our own pictures as avatars?

I think that one should use whatever suits him or her. But it is better not to constantly change the avatar.

I prefer always to see the same avatar, I can immediately recognize the user, even without reading the name. For a moment I was not at all sure who you were, but mentioning the "baby face" your previous avatar came to my mind.

Changing one's avatar could sometimes create confusion. In the instant case you just could not recognize me because I changed my avatar. Normally we concentrate more on visual memory rather than remembering a user's screen name, so we remember his/her avatar in our mind.

That's interesting, dpk. I noticed quite some time ago that you had changed your avatar, but didn't know why. (I should have just ask you about it, but felt it was not my business. Sometimes, I am comfortable asking questions... other times, I am not.) I believe someone may have been mistaken in one respect, though... I have always thought everyone took you as an earnest and serious person. I KNOW that is how I see and interact with you. It never mattered to me what your avatar was. (I was not one of the friends who suggested you change your avatar, was I?) I seem to remember something about changing avatars and vanny? was also involved? IDK, I just catch glimpses of your baby avatar and vanny. Very strange!

It is heartening to read that my friends on mylot consider me as an earnest and serious person. I appreciate your point that what we express here is more important than our respective avatars. I changed my avatar on the suggestions of few mylot friends (including vanny) and I took a lead from those, who started using their real picture as their avatar in the revamped mylot. Prior to that I used a picture of baby as my avatar for many years.

@dpk262006 Hmmm... that is interesting, too, dpk... IDK if you are aware that my avatar is only sort of a picture of me? My daughter was and still is a lover of the SIMS games. She decided to make herself a "new" family when her mom and I got divorced. She used pictures of us, skinned the pictures and stretched them over her SIMS characters. She waited until the character wearing my face sat down at his table, then took his picture and gave it to me for my avatar. That was maybe eight years ago. (I've called him DE ever since... most people don't realize I am strictly talking about him, not me on myLot... It is kinda funny, but I hadn't planned on telling anyone that, either.)

Yes, frequently changing avatars could create a kind of confusion because we mostly recognize a user through his/her avatar rather than his log in name.

I think we should have the avatar that we wish to and that we feel good about. I have used my Celtic knot peace sign since nearly the very beginning of my time here. I had a globe with a flower in it to begin with and then I found this. I think this should say a little about who we are but that is as far as it goes.

It is entirely a user's choice which avtar s/he wants to use. I have observed that you have been using your avatar for quite a long time and your mylot friends recognize you through this avatar of yours. I was okay with my previous avatar but some friends suggested that I should change it so I decided to give it a try.

Hi! I had same avatar for eight years and I changed it this 2016 with my own photo. Actually my profile photo here is not very clear as it gives more emphasis on the background rather than my own face. I would love to change my avatar with myself being visibly clear but perhaps I will do it some other time. There are no guidelines I think of what profile photo you have to post it here. I guess as long as it looks decent it is enough.

Avatar is a Hindi word but it is used here on mylot. Avatar here means - our profile picture. As you have posted a picture of yourself with your partner as your profile picture. Earlier a baby face used to appear, alongside my name as my profile picture. I used that baby face picture for many years. However, recently, I decided to change that and now I've been using my own picture as profile picture. Hope it clears?

Ah, I have not seen you in a while @dpk262006 - and now I really see you ! And it is very nice to see you . As you know, I mostly keep anonymous, so I never put my real face on these sites. And I am quite boring and lazy in the way of avatars and rarely, if never, change what I pick out (my sunset has been here from the beginning!). I suppose we all have to do what we feel is comfortable for ourselves. I sort of think of it as a logo for a company - a recognizable sign/symbol that represents the company - an avatar represents the person. Changing it often might make it difficult for others to instantly recognize a person, but I know some people enjoy variety and that's fine too. I've always known you with the baby face and always took you seriously !

I am delighted to read your comments that now you are able to see my real picture and this makes you smile. I know that you do not put your real picture as your avatar and you love to remain anonymous. Leave apart your picture, many of us do not know your real name. .. It is fine if you feel comfortable with your anonymity. Your comments/posts/views are more important than the picture being used as your avatar. Yes, you are right, some people want variety in life and they keep changing their avatar picture quite regularly. Frequent changes could sometimes mislead others about the identity of a mylotter, untill and unless others are well aware about the screen name of that particular mylotter. It is good to hear irrespective of my earlier (baby face) avatar you used to take me seriously. I am thankful to you for your kindness. Have a nice day!

@much2say Yes, it is the first time that I have used my real photo on this site. I used to be apprehensive, therefore, I was not in favour of using my own picture. However, now I shun away my apprehensions and have decided to change my avatar. I noticed that many other (mylotters) have been using their own pictures and it feels good to see someone in real picture. It is entirely your choice if you wish to remain anonymous even about your real name. You need not worry unnecessarily, no one is going to track you (e.g. FBI people) even if you reveal your identity because we all are average human beings and not celebrities, who would be hounded. I think no one (other than our mylot friends) will bother to see our picture or what we are doing here on mylot. The picture was taken when I was visiting capital of a North Eastern State called Meghalaya. The name of the city which I visited is - Shilong. I was heading from Guwahati to Shillong and this was taken on the way. Yes, everything is fine. Thanks for asking. Hope you too are doing fine.

@dpk262006 Is this the first time you have ever put up a real photo of yourself on a site like this? I have not been so brave. And you're right, I have never put my real name out there either. I must be the invisible woman! I don't mind what anyone does with their avatars - it is their personal choice. It's just like real life in that people can dress as they like or get a new haircut. And now you have a new look on myLot! Is there any story behind the photo of where it was taken? Hope all is well on your end that you have a great weekend!!

Whatever choices you want to make are great as long as they are your choices. Personally I don't think avatars are that important but its all about preference. As far as being taken seriously. I've rejected some of the ideas I've read about that subject. I am allowed to disagree?
