Memories in a photograph

I recently scanned this photograph, taken back when I lived in Iowa. Wherever I live, I like to have a place where I go to unwind and spend some alone time. In Santa Barbara, it was a walk/run on the beach. Here's it's cycling. In Iowa, it was walking along the railroad tracks. When I look at this photograph, I can remember what the air felt like, some of the things I was thinking about, who was in my life, and so on. Do you have a place where you go to unwind? Can a photograph remind you of what you were thinking at a certain time in your life?

Yes, when we lived in Monte-Carlo it was a bench in the Japanese Gardens, here is a pathway in the woods, alone a small river, in Italy it was the park in front of the school where I graduated. It's a shame that I do not have many photos of those places.

Can you still give yourself a sense of calm by thinking about those places? I do miss the sound of the ocean sometimes.

@TheHorse I miss the sound of the sea, the Japanese Gardens were just by the sea. Yes I can still give myself a sense of calm when I think to those places.

Photographs are a sure way of transporting you back to the past, aren't they?

@jaboUK I wonder if there's a decent explanation for why some sights, songs, and smells take us back more readily than others.

I can look at a photograph and remember where I was and what I was doing. Those are some good memories.

If I took the photo, I can often remember what I was thinking at that moment.

I have some photos of the places that do this for me. There is one place up in a small resort town called McCall. It is called "Charlie's Gardens". A lovely place with a little pond in the middle and flowers all around. Don't get there very often Then there is a part of the athletic park down the road from where I live. Not too many people go there so I usually have it to myself. I find a shady spot and set down in the grass. Then there is also a place I go in my mind. It is a beach area and lay in the dune area back away from the actual beach n the cool, tall grasses that grow there. I can relax and close my eyes anywhere I might be and go there in my mind. Off in the distance is a little cottage.

When I was a kid, I really loved our backyard. Whenever I was alone, which happened all the time, I would go there and would think of so many things. Looking at our family album reminds me of my childhood and how wonderful life was with our parents still living.

@TheHorse Yes it makes me want to go back to being a kid again where I don't have to worry about anything except playing.

When I lived in South Africa for two years, I went and sat on the beach in Camps Bay, outside of Cape Town.

Great picture! It looks rugged. Were those rocks accessible all the time, or only during certain tides?

@ElizabethWallace Reminds me of some of the rocks at Muir Beach in Marin County.

@TheHorse Most of them are big enough to see all the time, but a few of the smaller ones were covered at high tide.

It sure can. Sometimes I feel sad when I see a picture of someone who is no longer around.

I get that same feeling when I look at old pictures of furbabies gone by, sometimes it's enough to bring me to tears but usually I simply remember their quirky personalities. With the landscape pictures I've taken I might remember when I took it if it happens to be an unusual one for this desert of mine. It's wonderful to be able to put oneself back in the frame of a moment in the past, isn't it?

It is. I still dream about my most recent furbaby. The pictures remind me of the relationship we had.

Every photograph is a memory..I often use a photo to write a story. When i was a kid i spent a lot of time in the barn with my horse. Most of my life I unwind in my studio where I paint and listen to books on CD. And of course, Camping is like heaven for me.

Since we lived on the bank of the Missouri River in Council Bluffs, Iowa, it was extremely peaceful there. When the moon was full, I would walk the country roads (which would shine like diamonds) and think about a lot of things @TheHorse . I could probably still tell you where every tree is located even today.
