First day at the preschool in two weeks. What will I find there?

I'm working all this week (mornings) at the preschool in Berkeley. We're finishing up our Summer/Fall break, and school will be in session. The kids will all be familiar, and it will be interesting to see how the corn and squash are doing. Any guesses as to what things will look like? None of the teachers seem to know whether there's a drip irrigation system there, but my hunch is that there is. The "crops" always seem happy, regardless of whether there's been rain.

If your crop looks happy I suspect there is a a drip irrigation system.

@TheHorse If I do not water the garden every evening (or early morning) and it does not rain, after two to three days the leaves start to wither.

@LadyDuck Same here, at all of our locations. I've neglected Ground Squirrel Gardens for a few days. I'm going to check to tomorrow.

I think you're right. All of the plants look suspiciously healthy.

Thanks! The squash didn't get that much bigger. But it looks healthy. I wonder if tomatoes would grow in the Fall in Berkeley. I have a packet in my pocket (sounds like a song).

Whoa! Pre school! I did that at the day care one summer, I never went back to work there because those poor kids were starved for attention and love, it was so sad.

Were they from poorer neighborhoods? The kids I worked with in Oakland were starved for positive attention, but they responded well to love and guidance. The current kids come from acadmic families, and are more independent, but they still enjoy love and guidance.

Do the kids plant a garden at school? Wish more schools would. Kids nowadays hardly know where food comes from.

Yes, I've been showing kids how to plant and harvest for years. At this preschool, the kids help us with all steps, including eating, of course.

@TheHorse That's great, maybe they will go home and plant a garden when they are a little older.

I hope that there is a drip system or the crops will be in a sorry state.

@jaboUK I'll try to take a picture tomorrow. It's one of those I got arrested for killing on my balcony. Once I submit the picture as "exhibit G," my probation will be over. I knew it would survive all along.

Every thing looks good. I'm going to make "propping up" the sunflower a "project" tomorrow. It's beautiful, but listing.

Little elves who want to make pony and kids happy so they turn up in night perhaps...when everybody is back home...do the job and feel pleased to see happy faces of little ones..nice thought Jessa. :)

Could be. We have nice sunflower, which I'll photograph this week. The squash looks good. I didn't have time to check the corn closely.

You might find a future child laborer to exploit or you might get arrested for droopy corn or squashed squash. Anyway, I am sure the kids will benefit from you being there.

I will be arrested for a listing sunflower unless we can fix it tomorrow. I think I'll enlist some kid support and use yarn.

Is it likely that there'd be ripe corn and squash ready to pick? How exciting would that be.

We've harvested some snow peas (in the Spring), one ear of corn (we ate it and the kids loved it) and two squash (the kids found its taste boring). I'll check the corn tomorrow. We might have another ear ready to harvest!

@JudyEv That's about how it was! But the kids were pretty excited about it. I like 3- and 4-year-olds because they're so easy to please!

@TheHorse With only one ear ripe at a time, I guess the kids have to be satisfied with five kernels each. :)

I got my share of hugs today. Actually never had time to break out the mandolin. The garden looks good. Too bad squash tastes "boring"! I'll check the corn tomorrow.
