After work last night, hubby and I headed to Emporia, Kansas. We were looking for our nearest Aldi store. We also ate out. It was clear when we left but the rain began about forty five minutes into our trip.
Hubby never drives excessively fast, and the down pour made him drive a bit slower, like 50 or 55 mph. There was a semi catching up with us quickly, as that is a main trucking highway, when suddenly, there was a deer in front of us crossing the highway. Followed closely by another one. We were able to swerve and still hold to the road thankfully. The semi backed off a bit as well.
The rest of the way home we found ourselves hoping that any other deer were sheltering under the trees and were not inclined to get wet.

You would think they would see the lights and stay back. We try to drive carefully at dusk and at dawn.

No, there is not really time. I hope she was okay, though.

Deer scare me....ever since my college days and I seen the results of one of the other students that hit one.
Fortunately I've not ever hit one, and rarely have even seen them when I am driving at night on the various roads.
To Jasmines and back at night I often see possums, armadillo, and skunks.
On 56th to Heather's we often see birds of sorts crossing the road.

You probably see a lot of wild turkieys for sure out there. It would be a place for wildlife along that road.

how scary! Deer can cause totaled vehicles and fatalities, plus with the rain swerving and stopping could have been problematic

@GardenGerty dad used to have these things on the car that supp whistled when air went through them to alert deer, no idea if they worked, but we never hit one in that car

I can imagine. Kindof like hopping deer. I am not as bothered by semis--I figure they are well trained even if they are in a hurry.

This is one reason we are never in a terrible hurry. You never know what will surprise you.

When you talk of deer crossing the highway, for me it is like a fairy tale. We do not have deer in this part of the world.

Omigosh, lucky you didn't get in a wreck. My poor son hit a deer, years ago when he was rounding a curve on his first day in a Forest Service vehicle. Some luck, huh?

I thought at that time that the semi was glad we were in front and he could not pass us. He would probably have been going fast enough to have hit them.
