What Is the End of Your Work Week?

Many people in the US work Monday to Friday jobs. The typical job is pictured 8 or 9 am to 4 , 5 or 6 pm. That does not take into account all the jobs and businesses that go around the clock and every day. I work in a school. I work most Mondays through most Fridays, except for holidays and training or teacher work days.. Today is the end of my work week. I am at work by 7:45 and off work, if I leave, at 3:35. I know that in some other countries the normal work week is six days or even seven. I would burn out quickly. I am having a hard time after two years not working getting used to being back at work. I go to bed earlier, because I cannot nap, even if I want to. I think more carefully about meals and I try to get house chores done. I think it might surprise some people how much people in other countries work, or do not work. My work week, since I have off duty lunch time, is considered thirty five hours a week. I am paid well but never for more than those hours.

I am retired so I don't have a 'work week' per se. I do, however, help my daughter get my grandson up and around Monday through Friday and, believe me, sometimes it is real work get that done. This morning we had to call the police.

@GardenGerty It's not even 11 am yet and I've gotten so many things done here this morning. Nice to get up early. Maybe I can start going to bed as soon as Steve leaves every night to give me more productive morning computer time.

I am working as a freelancer so there is no holiday as such.I work even on saturday sunday sometime. Job market in India is difficult as well. Many companies give very few holidays and weekly off. Some companies give saturday sunday off but most only give Sunday off. Companies sometime call for additional work on weekends too. Employees have no choice but attain office in such scenarios.

I do not know how we would handle the mandatory overtime. Do you at least get extra pay for extra work?

@GardenGerty yes we get extra money for overtime. But its stressful you know. You get burned out if you do not get single holiday in a week. Most of the service sector companies here work because of outsourcing from america and EU.That is the main reason they outsource.Rates are competitive and workers here do not complain about deadlines. My friends in IT sector sometime wait till 10 or 11 o clock in night to finish work before deadline. If they too start complaining about work deadlines, denying over time companies wont outsource. Its simple.

Here in Switzerland people work from 40 to 42 hours a week. When I was young, in Italy, I worked 46 hours, we also worked on Saturdays, but less hours on that day.

I was always under the impression that European countries had more time off, more acations and holidays. Maybe you do, but work longer weeks to make up for it. I learn something new all the time.

@GardenGerty European workers have more vacation days in Summer. A young worker has 15 days, but when you work from 25 years in a place you can have as much as 4 weeks. They work more hours during the week.

I like being retired. Back when I was working my two days off were not together, so I didn't have a real five day work week.

That makes it hard to plan any little getaways.

@GardenGerty Yes it did, and I also worked for a company that liked to deny vacations, so getting time off was a challenge. Then about a year before they fired me they started letting up on that policy and I was able to start getting some decent time off, which I liked to take around my birthday every year. I was in the elevator one day and one of the guys was saying how he was denied the time off to get married. He took it anyway.

When I worked (for thirty-five years) it was always 9 to 5 with an hour for lunch Mon-Fri. I never worked more than thirty-five hours a week. But we stopped working over fifteen years ago - so I have no work weeks....all fun weeks.

I know you planned well for retirement. Thirty five hours seems plenty for me.

I only work Monday - Thursdays for two hours a day, between 10-12. I'm happy that I don't need to work full time.

I am not really working out of need for income. I need structure and new stimulus in my life. I could handle a two hour a day job if it had been offered.

I don't have an end of work week as we are open all the time. My days off this week were wednesday and thursday...then I work another 9 days then a day off then another 3 and another day off. I've only been there a month but it looks like you get one full weekend per month off which is fine with me as the weekend has not mattered to me for years now.

I do not care for the long stretches with no break, but sometimes you do what you have to because you really need a job.

I believe people with a shorter schedule do not realize how many people work extra long and hard.
