Sunflower Remnants

We planted a few exotic red and black sunflowers this summer and some large yellow ones grew from sunflower seeds I scattered around to feed the birds. They have been in full flower for about a week or so. Our local squirrels have decided that the seeds in the flowers are ripe for eating and, in the process, tear the flowers to shreds. Anne managed to cut a few to bring in and enjoy in these last days of summer. Are there a lot of squirrels where you live? Now off to work 'til 4 PM.

I like sunflowers indoors but, unfortunately, the water in the vase begins to stink after a short time. You have to change it every day.

We have not noticed that. I just got up to sniff the water in these and would describe it as "green."

We grew some out on the back by the alley one year and they were sure pretty when they grew up tall and proud out there. We have a family of squirrels here in the back. There's a big oak tree and I can watch them outside my window. They scamper up and down the limbs and chase one another.

They are fun to watch alright. I watched one tear a sunflower apart to get the seeds.

Yes, because I live in a very woodsy area. We get a lot of critters out back and we have no fenced back yard. Squirrels everywhere! The sunflowers are beautiful. I'm glad your wife could retrieve a few!

We have lots of squirrels but no sunflowers. The squirrels are a nuisance - they bury things in the lawn then make lots of holes trying to find them again.

What a shame! They are so pretty. We have a lot of gray squirrels and herds of deer that gobble up everything!

@DianneN Yes, it can be for certain. People daily visit the store where I work looking for ways to thwart the furry creatures.

@JamesHxstatic They have to eat, too, but it's so aggravating.

My mother used to plant sunflowers round her apple tree in the hope that the parrots would eat the sunflower seeds and leave the apples alone.

@JamesHxstatic It did to a degree I think. But of course they would still peck an apple here and there.

no squirrels here, so it's good to see pictures and read about all creatures great and small in other countries. it's interesting also to see different colors and sizes of sunflowers. vincent van gogh instantly came to mind. may i ask what is that silver metal thing on the floor?

We are lucky, we have plenty of birds but no squirrels that come into the gardens. I have seen some in the forest, but I have never seen one in the garden.

@JamesHxstatic I do not know why the squirrels do not come to the private gardens. It is true that our woods are full of walnuts, oaks and hazelnuts, they have plenty to eat.

There are squirrels in town but not out here where I live. We do have rock chucks- like woodchucks but they burrow under the ground and sun themselves on the rocks when its hot.

@JamesHxstatic I don't know. Some folks might say they were of the marmot family. Fat little guys that whistle when warning their tribe that danger is near.
