A Dog Wants To Be My Friend (Animal Story 1)

Yesterday my husband and I visited friends of ours who've got a new dog. It's their third. The predecessors are in dog heaven after long, happy lives. The new one is black - like the others were. It looks a bit like the one in the pixabey photo. It also has a white bib. It's a mixture of this and that. Our friends told us of what, but not being informed about (and also not very interested in) dog breeds most of what they said passed me by. I only remember that there's a bit of a border collie in it.
They named the dog Leon. It was Leo at first, but they thought that the 'n' at the end of the name gave it more authority when they used it, especially now while they're still in the training stage. The dog is four months old and a playful puppy full of temperament.
I'm not a dog person. I love cats. Unfortunately, we don't have one, but that's a different topic. I've noticed, however, that dogs love me. I don't have the foggiest idea why that is so. I don't encourage them. On the contrary, I show them that I'm not too keen on their proofs of affection.
We were all sitting round a table eating plum cake with crumble and whipped cream - the cake of the season and a speciality of my friend's. When I wasn't eating or drinking tea, I had my hands in my lap. Several times, the dog crept under the table to where I was sitting and licked my hands. I was startled and shrieked and said, "Nein, nein (no, no)!" in a stern voice, but Leon wasn't impressed.
On the contrary. He untied my shoelaces three times! Every time, I only noticed it when he was done. He did it deftly without ripping them to pieces. Our friends aren't young any more. I told them to teach the dog to *tie* shoelaces, too. Could be useful in old age.
Now I'm wondering what quality I have that makes dogs come to me without my encouraging them.

They sense that you're a good person. Dogs know these things.

I think animals can tell when someone loves nature and even if the person isn't that keen on dogs they will attract them.

One thing about animals is that they are excellent judges of character. It doesn't matter if you are a dog person or a cat person, they know that you love animals and are a good person. As for the puppy, he was bound and determined that you pay some attention to him, no matter what it took. He knew your heart and that you were good and loving, and he wanted some of that love. It's like my critter collection. Petey, the orange tabby, now will go up to people for attention. Previously he would run from people because he didn't trust humans. Now he is an excellent judge of character and I pay attention to his actions towards people. If he won't go near them I am a bit stand offish from them. If he goes to them and asks for attention I know the people can be trusted. It's the same with dogs, only more so. Dogs are friendlier and are more dependent on humans so they can judge faster than cats.
It was a huge compliment on Leon's part to be so determined to get your attention. You definitely are a loving, caring, good person who anyone would be blessed to call you friend.

I was never a dog person but I have had a few dogs in my life that were very special to me. I think it's a personality thing. Maybe a smell thing too. Some breeds have heavy duty smellers. If you do find that your friends have taught this dog to tie shoelaces I think their is a show on tv that would be great for the animal to try out for.

LOL, how adorable! Well, you probably didn't find it so, but that's clever. I agree that he is probably at least part border collie, and they are very smart dogs. I am definitely a cat person, too, but I like dogs, and I always love on my friends' dogs when I see them.

When I was a child in the 1970s, I was often followed home by a stray dog. I would meet one on my way home from school and it would just follow me the whole way. Dogs are on leads most of the time now or at least accompanied by owners, but during my childhood it seemed a lot of dogs took themselves for walks or spent an entire day just wandering around town! I do like dogs but I think my early experiences made me a little nervous of them. I've always been primarily a cat person.

There used to be a lot of stray dogs where I grew up too. It sounds grim now, but when I went to secondary school we used to get off the bus and walk the mile or so to school past the local slaughterhouse, which had a rather broken down surrounding wall and various dogs used to jump over the wall carrying off hooves and ears. We also used to have to watch our step as there was dog mess everywhere.

I think the dog can sense that you can be a loving person too when it comes to animals .

Dogs are very intelligent and their kind has been among humans for thousands of years. I think that dog wanted you to adopt it. That is how they choose their owners by acting funny.

Because you are a nice person and small animals like dogs are drawn and attracted to good people and want to befriend you.

I hope you can get a cat soon. I know people who don't like cats seem to say that too, that the cats are more affectionate to them... Not sure how that works though
