My 50th discussion on mylot - English, Me or Culture?

I always wonder if mylotters would have a hard time understanding what I am trying to express...
Is it culture or way of expressing a communication barrier? Or is it because I like to cut what I want say short.
Sometimes too short and sweet to the extent that people have a hard time understanding me.
I always thought my English is okay, i.e., I use simple English words to express my thoughts, not because I don't know bombastic words. But simply because I hope that everyone can understand what I am trying to say without making extra effort.
It's a shame that I cannot convey messages well...
I scored well in my English Language exams. Distinctions don't mean anything.
Certifications are only just pieces of paper to meet social benchmarks.
Is there something wrong with me, my English or is it just cultural differences?

@XinfulThotz It was not a compliment, just the truth. I regret to cannot bring a piece of my sunny day to Singapore. After the rain comes the sun, it will be back soon

I don't see any problems
with either your English or way of expressing things.
Sometimes there are differences in communication with people who have English as a first language
some things the US members say confuses me.
Has any particular incident brought about this discussion?

@XinfulThotz That happens all the time and the problem may be with the responders not with you.
I bet if you ask any older member they'd all say they'd had responses that don't get the actual topic of discussion...I know @JolietJake will agree with me here
So I'd say don't worry...keep calm and carry on

@Mike197602 Not exactly particular incident. Because 50 discussions is a mini milestone for me on mylot. And i reflected on the past 3weeks here. There are times I find difficulty in expressing myself. Either my command if English is poor or the culture of speaking is different. For eg, when I read their response, they seem to misunderstand what I am trying to convey.

English is not my native language either and so many times I have to think a lot before writing.

@hereandthere for your convenience. improvident means "not having or showing foresight; spendthrift or thoughtless."

bombastic words are subjective to how well-read a person is...some simple words may sound bombastic to some... so if you are read a lot and is good in your vocab, you won't find my examples "bombastic"
anyway, to name a few: labyrinthine, improvident, obtuse

I don't have trouble understanding what you say. Your English is fine, and I live in Asia so no problem.

I think there are only those few that I had a hard time talking to... but only seen them like, a couple of times? Or maybe the way I spoke offended them so I never see them again?

Culture indeed plays a big part.
Due to the culture, there are times I have to rephrase my response/ comments in order to prevent miscommunication or misunderstanding.

@MALUSE Very true. I guess it is alright so long as we tried. Sidetrack from the topic a little, I used to correspond a lot with people from your country! However, haven't got the chance to travel to Germany yet..

@XinfulThotz Yes, it happened that people have been pretty rude or replied to questions not answered. But only happened a few times.

There isn't any particular incident. just that sometimes while corresponding, I just got this feeling that the message wasn't conveyed...
I am not sure if I were too sensitive or was it really that people misunderstood what I said.. Have you ever felt that way?

Un....fortunately something is very very....right (haha) with your username
Yer English is fine. No "bombastic" words
Those words belong to select few only. Rest of us just trudge along and learn as we go (from them).

Why do you feel people do not understand you? You may not have perfect English but honestly I have seen worse from people who are native English speakers. You are right, a certificate or award in an English class does not mean a person is fluent, only that the person is able to do well on tests. Yes, we are from different cultures, but in the US there are many different regions that are different cultures as well. If you are judgine by the number of interactions your discussions get it can also be affected by the time of day you are on the site, and who else you know on the site.

no! of course not! I found it very useful...
Ok, let me tell you a secret...
I started learning English language only when I was about 5 years old. And back then we only learnt very simple words...and in Kindergarten, we were allowed to speak Mandarin in class..
When I entered Primary school, my first form teacher (teacher in charge of my class) is a Malay. She only know how to communicate in English. I had total communication breakdown. Most of my peers' parents know how to speak English and it was not a "foreign" language to them at all.
I was the only one whom don't understand a single word what my teacher was saying..
Everyday during recess time when all the children went to buy food or went to play, I spent my whole session at the public phone crying and telling my mum I don't understand a single word..
Those were the days... but miraculously, I don't know why, I took one year from a "F" grade in English Language, to a "B" grade.
Everything we learn in school is in English. So in Primary One, it affected my Mathematics results too..
In Primary 2, I picked up and was the first in class and 8th position in the whole Primary 2 cohort...
You may be wondering why I am telling you all these...It's because I am still learning English Language daily too. I haven't mastered the language yet. So sincerely, I found the link very useful. Thanks for sharing...
