I saw a Facebook page about finding and hiding painted rocks. It was in Lakeland, Florida. A family from Lakeland went to a city in Washington state and found a painted rock. They learned that painting, hiding, and finding the rocks was a new craze. The activity is spreading quickly in Lakeland. You can start or continue it in your city or town. Some people paint simple or complicated art and others write encouraging words on the rocks.
ROCK ON: Painting, hiding and finding painted rocks has become the latest crazeAAA You may have seen them on social media, or you may have seen them around town. Painted rocks found near the Learning Garden. They are popular at the Learning Garden, showing

I like it Because it doesn't involve using your blasted cell phone. At least I assume it doesn't. Don't get me wrong I love Pikachu, and I identify with Jigglypuff, but...

@TheHorse Now you are getting funny. That would be a rock in the gears. You might have the makings of a Pokemon rock hunting craze.

It involves buying a bit of paint and brushes, painting free rocks, getting outside and hiding the painted ones and having fun looking for others and watching people find yours. You don't invade private property, drive around looking at a smartphone or fighting for a blip on a screen.

@akalinus Maybe I'll paint a Pikachu rock just to bait the Pokemon Go addicts.

I love this idea. My grand daughter loves to paint rocks. She has been doing it for years. Her mom and her collect rocks and then paint them. I will have to show them this idea.

I love the idea, too. I wish I had thought of this when my kids were young. They can keep busy painting, hiding, and finding the rocks and bring joy to others as well.

@Happy2BeMe My kids used to paint rocks on a lazy nothing to do day but we never thought about this idea. It is a great idea.

You could always try it. Even if you don't hide them, you could use them in decorating arrangements, or whatever.

@akalinus That's the best part. Rocks are free and the paint would be the only expense and that shouldn't cost that much.

A craze ! I love that! We went to some beach on Mexico when I was a kid and they had very smooth rocks (don't know where that was), but we brought home a lot of them. They were perfect for painting on - and I did a few back then. Oh but how cool to hear it's a craze now - I love the idea of hiding them and having people find them!!!

@much2say It is a lot safer than finding Pokemon characters. And it only costs the price of the paint, rocks are free.

You can either keep the rocks you find or rehide some of them for others to find.

You can start it anywhere. Just don't go on private property unless you have permission. And don't pick up rocks that may be in a protected area.

sounds a fun idea - hope they check there are no valuable fossils or crystals in them first

We paint rocks here occasionally but I haven't heard of people hiding them. They do sell pet rocks too which are painted to look like animals.

@Hannihar Some people write on the rocks, draw pictures, or just paint them different colors. There are no rules but keep it decent if you put them out for others to find.
