Ampersands

Just for a change I went to the new users page. The usual discussions greeted me. Many of the new users are not proficient in the English language. I can often overlook their spelling and grammatical mistakes. That said, stop with the ampersands. I have never seen so many ampersands thrown into a discussion. Add to that the texting abbreviations and I feel some of these posts are being written by incredibly lazy writers. Do you use ampersands in writing, or is this just a new craze that I missed and am clearly too old to appreciate.

According to the guidelines, we are not supposed to criticize bad or broken English here. This said, "text speak" is also supposed to not be used at myLot. Ampersand is no more employed to write French since 2 centuries, and I use it very rarely in English.

Is it a leftover from the Romans?

@Orson_Kart It is supposed to have been invented by the Romans. There are a lot of letter abbreviations in manuscripts from the Middle-Age. A few have been used by the first printers, but I think that the ampersand is the only one to have survived until today.

I only use ampersands if text is limited (Which clearly is not on here) or is a part of a title. I hate using contractions or abbreviations or shorthand anyway. I am not old and I hate the short form of writing. only places it is understandable are texting, chatrooms, and like I said, places where characters are limited.

I use ampersands here and there. The ampersand is popular in home decor and also in jewerly too.

what perplexes me is seeing the ampersand written or painted the wrong way, the one that looks like a number 3 with a line above and below or through it.

I don't use them. I regularly visit the new users but mostly battle to find one or two to reply to.

I would never use one in a written discussion. Lots of abbreviations make a post so difficult to read.

I have probably used it on occasion but I never really notice when I do. I work for a printing company so when some people place their order they want us to us it and others don't. I never really gave it much thought.

@Happy2BeMe I could compromise I suppose and be happy that you are happy to be you? I like being miserable you see. That's what makes me happy.

I've not noticed it being used here. Maybe you are mixing with the wrong sorts?

I thought using texting abbreviations wasn't allowed here. Maybe the newbees doing that didn't read the guidelines.

I take your comment to mean that you believe newbies take the time to read the guidelines.

I'm obviously not behaving well today. One of the responses to my comment sure felt like a reprimand. Oops.

I don't use ampersands and wouldn't know how to use them anyway! Does this mean we're getting old? lol

No, we're not getting old. We just learned to write words instead of using symbols as shortcuts. We also learned to write cursive.

@Morleyhunt That's very true! And I wouldn't give up writing cursive for anything!

I never use it in writing, except when really needed. I think the admin should look into it.
