You are what you eat

Tennessee is at the top of many lists, some good and some very bad. One of the bad lists is obesity. We may not always hit the #1 spot but we're usually within the top 5. Living here and seeing what people eat, and how they eat, makes me wonder why we aren't always #1 in fatness. I look at their grocery carts (buggies) and gawk at the 5 pound package of bologna, the Mountain Dew or RC Cola, the Moon Pies and anything fried. I see the lines at the various fast food drive-thrus...and they drive down the road with fries in one hand and the Big Mac in the other - I guess they all have a third hand I can't see, you know, the one actually steering the car. Then there are those on Facebook who post their daily dinner menu...here is an example of one: ....Ham (cooked with some type of fatty pork) ....Greens (cooked with some type of fatty something) .....Mashed potatoes .....Mac and Cheese .....Homemade brownies .....Homemade pie That menu was served to a family of 3 kids and one adults. All of them are overweight. This is how they eat every day. The mother is diabetic by the way. Would someone please tell me why people think Mac and Cheese is veggie? Why do they need to have two fatty starches at one meal? I see this all the time and it blows my mind. And don't think these kids are outside running and playing and burning off those calories..they aren't, kids don't play outside....not that I've seen anyway. This is just going to produce generations of people who are obese and it needs to stop. Now I think I'll go have a nice fried apple pie and wash it down with an RC Cola or two. No, forget that idea, I'll go to McDonalds instead. Photo:

Since I quit driving we don't get to McDonald's as often as we used to. And, since they moved KFC clear across town we don't eat there anymore. I have been able to get my daughter not to fix Hamburger Helper for every other meal and that sure helps. Still not a diet as it should be but who can really afford to eat as they should? Too expensive. And, I am at an age where I really don't care a whole lot anymore. I eat what I want when I want. I have no one to answer to and am at an age I should be able to enjoy myself.

@AbbyGreenhill ....I only smoked socially and had no problem not doing so. (Wish my daughter had it that easy) I used to drink but don't enjoy it anymore. But, I love good food.

I've been saying the same thing for years...I gave up smoking and drinking - but I won't give up food!

Our home town in Western Australia is near the top of the list for obesity too.

I've recently changed my eating habits. No more pasta every week. No more cheese. I miss it but I don't miss the weight!

I don't cheese at all, only due to stomach issues, but if I could eat it I would not eat mac/cheese and mashed potatoes the same meal.

The southern states usually rank at the top of the obesity list and one reason is quite obvious: these are poor states and fatty foods are cheap and affordable for poor people. To eat a healthy diet is costly. Just look at the prices and start adding them up.

@JohnRoberts I know a couple who lives from hand to mouth, along with 3 kids, 3 dogs, a few cats and God only knows who/what else The two adults both smoke, not sure if they drink, but he probably does. The kids don't starve but they eat a ton of not so healthy food.

@CoralLevang You almost got it right - they don't feed their pets, they don't vet their pets, or take love them or talk or play with them. They are lawn ornaments only.

Mac and cheese is veggie ? This is the unhealthiest kind of pasta, a lot of melted cheese and pasta together are a very bad mix, perfect to make you fat.

I eat McD a couple times a month, but I have one sandwich, maybe 5-10 fries, and a diet drink or water.
