There are two things I really look forward to every Christmas and New Year: ham and fruitcake. We have them both now - from a neighbor and from a relative, so thank you, Santa, for granting my wish, even if I wasn't too nice. Mother's giveaway, in turn, is homemade atchara, or pickled green papaya that goes well with fried, grilled and roasted food. Do you give or receive food from neighbors and relatives during this season?

That's a nice way of gift giving by your mother . We also have two ham (jamon de bola of Puref . and the "piña" pear shaped ham . We only had the pear shaped ham first . The other one for the New Year . Both are gifts of my borther-in-law's clients . Hmm , we don't have fruitcake this year . Last year there were two , all gifts to my BIL by their clients .

We always have a big ham and turkey dinner for Christmas. I've never once tried fruitcake though. Not that I don't want to, I just never got the chance...lol

For us it's different every year. One neighbor used to give us her yearly homemade variety of Christmas cookies, but for 2 years now she hasn't given us anything (even though we have). Another neighbor gives us either muffins or cookies she baked from a box (she buys a certain brand from a certain discount store - she feels the need to give us every detail ). Our friend gave us homemade sugar cookies and a cranberry pound cake - but she actually works at a bakery. This year my daughter made the family a gingerbread cake . . . my son made fruity pebbles treats (like rice crispy treats but with a different cereal) . . . and we also made tins of these pretzels and Rolo sandwiches dipped in white chocolate with sprinkles.

@hereandthere I love getting "different" food stuff during the holidays . . . so many great recipes out there! The rice crispies - yes - very easy! But I think I only like the rice crispy ones - not with any other cereal. Let me see if I can find the correct link to what we made . . . my parents are picky and they actually loved these!
Rolo Pretzel Sandwiches …3 ingredients to make and the perfect blend of salty and sweet, crunchy and chewy, and all around delicious! Are you ready for the most addicting treat you will make this holiday season? These Rolo pretzel sandwiches are incredibly

when we were given dried cranberries, my mother added it to the pancake mix and it tasted great! i love it when we receive ginger-flavored cookies instead of the usual chocolate chips. i've seen a recipe here about how to make rice crispy treats and have been meaning to try it one day. the pretzels i've tasted have been too salty, so i'm not keen on them. what's a rolo sandwich?

can you buy green papaya there? grating it can be tedious, though.

We prepare our own food. Hihihi! We just give them during birthdays, but not during Christmas and new year. I also look forward to having ham (with rice) during holiday seasons like this. Hahahaha! Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

@hereandthere you are right, I don't eat pork anymore and the fact that it is ham made it even more unhealthy because it is now categorized as processed meat.

It was a tradition before here in our neighborhood. We didn't give to the neighbors this time around, maybe because we didn't see it worth our time. Your right, though, we should bring it back. It adds to the Christmas cheer. Happy New Year. I love fruitcake and will be going to the grocery to get some that are now on sale.

in the past, we received more. the ham and grapes we received were from relatively new (and richer) neighbors. although we are surprised and appreciate their consistency, i think in your case, it's also good to choose who you give food, too.

Mostly fruits, I think, citrus fruits. Many people complained that they didn't feel like baking. And the family is vegetarian...except me. I usually buy and eat on the outside. Usually, people send cakes.

i would love to receive cakes. people here tend to buy them, like cake rolls. we have a tradition here of having certain fruits during the new year, but we only buy what we will eat. if you're the only one who is not vegetarian, do you cook your own food on regular days, or just eat out?

when we were still new here in the neighborhood (1972), our family cooked long life pansit and at the stroke of midnight, we share the pansit to our neighbors- all pansit. but then, we also receive food cooked by our neighbors, which incidentally, surprisingly, and expectedly, PANSIT! so it is pansit all the way.
