Whatever happened to my recycle bin?

Here is Britain we have several different coloured dustbins designed for holding various types of recycling waste. Today is the day that my brown bin is emptied, which holds cans, plastic bottles and glass. As per usual I placed the bin outside my gate late last night so that it would be available irrespective of what time they arrived to empty it. When I went out this morning it had still not been emptied, so naturally I left it there. However, on arrival home the bin was nowhere to be seen. The refuge collectors often have the habit of emptying several bins and dumping them all together several houses away, which can be really annoying. I can only assume that the bin has been deposited somewhere out of sight, but I have no intention of wandering around the local streets to try to find it. Even if I saw an empty brown bin in a neighbouring street I would have no way of knowing whether that belonged to another home. Now I will have to order another brown recycling bin, which I find very inconvenient.

Surely when they empty them they should them back where they found them? Do you have any charge to pay for a replacement?

They stopped putting the dustbins back a long time ago. Now we need to leave the dustbin out on the pavement and they get dumped in groups within 2 or 3 houses distance.

@mysdianait Fortunately not. They do charge to replace the standard bin, but not the recycle ones.

@Asylum If you don't find it will you have to pay for a new one?

Do they charge you a fee for getting a replacement bin, or will they just provide you with another one free of charge?

At the moment recclebins are free, while the general waste bin costs £18. I consider it will only be a matter of time before they charge for each one.

@moffittjc We are restricted to a small bin for general waste, which forces people to recycle.

@Asylum I think our recycle bins are free, but we are charged for our trash bins. They just add the cost in to our taxes. People can choose what size containers they need for their general waste, but the bigger the bin, the higher the cost.

So sorry to hear about this. Perhaps, you can label your new recycle bin so you are sure it gets returned to you.

I would put chains on my new one, long enough for them to empty it, and a note that says do not take my bin again.

@Madshadi I am not sure that some of the collectors can even read.

The bin would simply not be emptied, so that would be futile.

@Asylum that's a bummer. Then I'd hope that the note does the job

Does the refuse agency charge you for additional bins, or do they simply provide them as they become lost or misplaced?

Oddly it depends on the colour. I know that this makes no sense, but a grey bin is chargeable whereas a brown, green or blue bin is not.

@DWDavis Only the fact that we need them, whereas we could survive without a recycling bin.

@Asylum That does seem odd. Is there something special about the grey bins?

Our trash collection day often falls on a windy day. This means our trash can as well as our green bins, our blue bins and our grey bins will often blow down the street once they have been emptied. We finally put our street address on them. I got tired of always ending up with the most disgusting green bin in the neighbourhood (we keep ours clean).

Here, new bins cost, so it's not unheard of for people to take someone else's rather than buy a new one (and our brown bin holds food and garden waste; it's a shame councils don't use a coherent system).

I have had to pay for a new bin in the past. I paid for a new general waste bin last year, after which the council removed it and replaced it with a smaller one. I was not amused.

@Asylum Yes, I tend to hold to the concept that if I paid for something, it's mine, and other people can't do what they like with it, even if they sold me the item. Unfortunately, there is a growing trend to behave like this isn't the case. The first time I put my recycle bin out, someone else exchanged it for their old one. The second time I put it out, I added my house number. My general waste bin was once taken by my next door neighbour by "accident" - they "hadn't noticed" that the bin they took back wasn't split from top to bottom. Yeah, right. I got that one back though.

@egdcltd I agree with your skeptical view of you neighbour not having noticed the absence of a full length split.

It is annoying the council reduced the size of our bins so that we have to recycle. It can still be difficult to accommodate the rubbish which is only collected every two weeks.

@Asylum put your house number on it to make it easier to retrieve if it gets relocated - at the flats here we all use each others, filling a bin before moving to the next rather than each filling our own - while everyone puts the right things in each bin it works well for us and gives a sense of communal spirit too

We have one recycling bin for plastic, paper and tins and a separate one for glass. Ours has our street number on it, so if the same thing happens we know which is ours. What are you going to do now?

I also once had my dustbin stolen on the day prior to collection. You would imagine that they would at least wait for it to be emptied. On that occasion I was charged for a new bin.

I hope your garbage collectors learn the art of doing it right by following the 'dabbawalas' here in India. Even Prince Charles was fascinated by their perfect system.

How very inconvenient . For that reason alone I am glad that here in the suburbs of Riga, Latvia we can burn regular garbage in our yard and the stuff we cannot burn we can take to place in large bins at certain spots to get removed and done with. Of course we do have neighbors who have their garbage removed by a garbage company but first of all it is expensive here and second they make so much noise and leave behind so much trash on the street that I am glad we are not obligated to have to have them come for our garbage.

Many people insist on placing rubbish loose into the dustbin, which often results in some being blown around the streets when they are emptied. I always bag the rubbish first, so it will not blow around.
