Graffiti/Street Art in Collingwood, Australia

I am not really into graffiti and/or street art although there are a few pieces I like. However I can admire the skill that goes into them. The creativity and talent that results in these pieces is now being more widely recognised and the best of the artists are often commissioned to produce particular 'works of art' in various places. These are all found in Collingwood, a suburb in Melbourne, Australia. I hope, if you are a fan of this art style, that you enjoy these.

I am a fan of the art but I don't think they should be allowed to do it anywhere they want on public property. I am for assigning special places for that.

I agree. There should be special areas put aside for such work.

It would be no more graffiti but painted walls. Many graffiti are a real nuisance, real street art is more rare, and is not a problem.

@topffer it would be the same. Painted walls or graffiti, however you'd like to call it, is a paint on walls. The only difference is that it would be more organised and not random. I wouldn't call it a problem, but it would be more appropriate to have graffiti in special places and not anywhere.

@Hannihar I don't know how they do such huge paintings without getting them out of perspective.

I do enjoy a lot of street art. I have a Banksy mouse mat for my computer based on some of his street art in the UK

@JudyEv he is an interesting artist, a figure bordering on legend due to his anonymity

Our son talks about Banksy. I think he has a book of his work or whatever.

I do like street art, but am not too keen on the graffiti, I prefer the scenes that artists do on walls.

@JudyEv Some of the older brick buildings in the city near us have street art on them, but they depict a scene from the time period from which the building was first built, and I find those so fascinating.

@Juliaacv That would be lovely. Some of our older towns have scenes from bygone years on them too.

Some are very clever. Sometimes they incorporate fixtures into the actual painting.

I love graffiti, there are alleys in Toronto that are full of them. Not much where I live but even the play areas for our kids put up walls just for graffiti. Those are full...Your show was awesome, it looks like you have one who did a lot of them. If I'm in the country and hear a train coming I will slow down and watch it go by, the graffiti on the trains make me smile.

Our son doesn't paint but he knows a lot of the painters and all about them. It is a whole new world with its own jargon and subculture.

@JudyEv My youngest son is an artist and although I don't think he has added graffiti to Toronto, I do have an awesome photo of him sitting by some Toronto graffiti.

Thanks for sharing this video. I love graffiti and street art. I have gone around cities here in Metro Manila to take photographs of street art. Hope to write posts here and put the photos as well.

I know some here really enjoy seeing images such as these so I thought I'd put them up for general enjoyment - or otherwise!

I'm not a fan of that kind of 'art' but there does seem to be a lot of it around here as well. Law enforcement here calls it tagging and it's illegal.

You are right about that @JudyEv but here I haven't seen anything that looks remotely like art, most are just plain stupid scribbles made by gangs.

There is quite a bit of controversy about it that's for sure. It seems impossible to stop it though so perhaps they need to think outside the square and come to some compromise.

I do enjoy well done street art. It is tagging that annoys me. Tagging graffiti onto something is just vandalism, and often related to gangs.

If the gangs who do this in the cities put that much effort into good things there would be no more gangs.

I wonder how they can do such large scale works (the 'picture' ones) and not get them out of perspective.

I am sorry, but I do not like graffiti at all. Many who like to cover the walls and monuments with graffiti are too many time not respectful and they ruin some great works with their markers.

@JudyEv Most monuments in Italian cities are covered by graffiti, it's a shame. This costs hundred of thousands of dollars every year to the Italian State to clean them.
