Like the rest of the midwest, our weather forecast says that we shall have ice, and rain, and snow and cold.
This is starting late tomorrow night.
I am not sure people believe this, as they are not depleting the milk and bread at the stores yet. It will all hit tomorrow.
Usually when the forecasters start with this the shelves are decimated rather quickly.

Decimated is a good word- I'll have to use it now and then--
If people ran to the store each time it snowed here we'd be wiped out- ha! but actually in the area I'm living which is Southern Ontario- there has been really hardly any snow for some reason- it's all going North and that's alright with me!

Glad to share my high dollar word with you. What they are saying here is that we will have layer upon layer of ice by the weekend. I do not mind snow, but will think twice about ice.

@GardenGerty I hate it too as it is a 'mature' persons nightmare- afraid to walk on ice as I have fallen in the past- hope it doesn't last long for you!

Oof, it is good to be prepared. I am glad we do not have to deal with things like that. At least with a monsoon we get at least an hours break to get to the store haha

I always have lots of good food on hand. The heat and cook stove at our house are natural gas, so it will not get interrupted. Neither will the water line, although I could store some just in case. I have canned milk, powdered milk, flour, sugar, shortening and oil. Meat in my freezer and canned meats.

@DesirousDreamer I have often had seasonal jobs, so I always stocked up on food to carry me over the holidays and summer break. When we moved we had been using an electric stove, but we wanted a gas stove. One of the tenants who moved out has lived in this town all of his life and he made the comment that if you have a gas stove you always will have a way to cook, even if the electric goes out. We get lots of wind here.

I hope you are pleasantly surprised and everyone stocked up and that things go well. We are supposed to have a storm come in this weekend. Hope it goes well.

Well, it is bitterly cold. I have not looked out to see about the ice here. I know an hour from here, in Wichita, there are many wrecks and pile ups.

@GardenGerty ......That is so scary. Poor people. I would hate to have to get out on the freeway. They had part of ours closed here a couple weeks ago.

I think it is very widespread today. Where did you live in Kansas? That same night I was in a Kroger store that was out of a lot of fresh things, like bananas and potatoes, as well as bread.

I have kept staples on hand for years, to balance out things like school vacations when I have no income. Also because I live far from my favorite stores.

@GardenGerty This is a good idea. I have quite a stock of staples too. I hate running out of something and having to make a special trip to town.

Yes, it always is. I have gas heat, and gas to cook on if the electric goes out.I would miss the internet, though. I have staples like flour and salt and sugar. Canned and dried milk, frozen meats and veggies.

Sounds like us Floridians anytime the weather forecasters start talking about the potential for a tropical storm or hurricane to hit the state! Everybody panics and stocks up on food and water. But I guess it's better to be safe than sorry!

@GardenGerty Well, I guess it could be the other way around...that everybody ignores the warnings from forecasters and does nothing to prepare. If that were to happen, there would be a lot of problems to deal with in the aftermath if such terrible weather came to fruition. I know back in the early 90s when Hurricane Andrew hit Miami, nobody was prepared, because we had gone so long without any hurricanes that nobody took the threat seriously. It was a big ole nightmare afterward because nobody had any food or water stockpiled.

Yes they are. Maybe they haven't seen the reports from the other parts of the country where this has hit. It sounds like we're going to be in for round two in a couple days. We do have tomorrow off for the most part from the recent weather and getting more on Friday, I think. I'll need to check that again.

The last front that moved through we had very little precipitation, just very cold weather. I think that makes everyone more skeptical.

The weather this winter seems to be so strange this year. We've gotten a little bit of everything normally here it's brutally cold, snow, ice the whole bit but we have had a little bit of everything. Yesterday it was 45 and we had thunderstorms with lighting that knocked out our power for a few minutes and now we're suppose to be getting more rain to freezing rain. I think mother nature has gone bipolar.

This is only my second winter in this place so it is hard to know what normal might be. I have expected more snow than we have gotten.
