Ceiling Fan Flies

Every once in awhile, Wylie and I hear a buzzing sound around the living room ceiling fan at night. With the light bulb on, I spotted a pesky mosquito flying around the ceiling fan. And every time I see it, I whacked it a few time with my broom. And then it goes away, since I don't see it dead on the floor, until I hear it flying and buzzing around the same ceiling fan fly again. Last month last year, it was the first time I saw a fly buzzing around my ceiling fan. Once again, I whacked it with the broom and wished it was dead. Is there a way to permanently get rid of these pesky flies that buzz around my ceiling fan? And why are they attracted to my ceiling fans? I'm glad they're not a bee, wasp, dragonfly or hornet in my house. But I want it gone. Have you had a pesky fly buzzing around your light fixture in your home? And if so, how did you get rid of it for good?

I usually just spray them with my kitchen spray, they fall down and I squash them. But in the summer we keep our fly swatter handy!!

I use a fly swatter. If that doesn't work then I get out the flying pest spray and give the offending bug a squirt.

@KristenH I have wanted to invest in one of those zapping swatters. I think they go for about $10.

@ElusiveButterfly Now that's a steal. I know there's electric zappers to use outdoors.

Most bugs are attracted to the light. I clap them between my hands to make sure I kill them! The sound of flies and mosquitos buzzing is very annoying.

@KristenH Oh I hadn't even thought of that. All our ceilings are low here.

@shaggin Hmm. No worries. I can hit it with the broom to reach the bulb and chain.

I see. I wish I can clap this sucker, but he flies so high up the ceiling fan and buzz around.

We have them in summer, not during this season. I use electric repeller inside the house, they work.

@KristenH Yes, those little electric repellents are not expensive and very good.

I found something on Amazon, to catch them, with certain type of bulb, but I never ordered it and it was no longer available. I hate when anything comes in that is attracted to light, it is very hard to kill them flying critters.

@KristenH I will look up and see if I can find it again, i don't know it is gone permanently but it was gone every time I looked. In the summer it can get crazy here, if you don't close the front door right away.

They're attracted by the light. I don't know if there is a way to get rid of them permanently. I'm surprised you have them in winter.

Me too. I'm glad it's just one and not a swarm of them. One is enough in my opinion.

I have an electric zapper, as my weather is to warm and bugs are a problem year round. I do have the sticky paper mentioned and use bug spray only when the other pest devices can't get the bug and the fly swatter hasn't been able to find it.

Don't have that problem, but one with new ones showing up in the windows. Have no idea where they are coming from... really annoying!

I had that one too, when I first moved 1.5 years ago. I had to call maintenance to help me remove those flies there... twice.

They can't live too terribly long. Perhaps just wait for them to expire?

I think my question is why do you get so many bugs inside? If we get two flies inside a year that's a lot. The fly is looking for a way out but it's confused! How do you get ride of it for good? - You kill it.

They look horrible when they've caught a few but those old-fashiined sticky fly papers that you hang up can be very effective.

Maybe it was attracted to the light in the fan. Some people use that blue light mosquito catcher/trapper and then you can hear the snapping sound when mosquitoes got into it (killed).

I've never had anything buzzing around my ceiling fans. I remember as a child my grandparents would hang a sticky flycatcher thingie to catch the flies and it worked. We took some one year to use while camping and the wind made them stick everywhere...that was no good, and if you don't use your fans you could try that - I know they still make them...I was looking on line for a photo and found this - its interesting...
Having flies in the warmer months is a constant battle. No matter what kind of fly you have-be it fruit flies, house flies, or any of the other 16,000 kinds (in North America alone)-they make their surroundings seem unclean and unpleasant. They buzz around
