Duh - and Double Duh

I wrote that we are expecting a Taiwanese lass and her mother soon. They will stay a couple of days with us. The girl has stayed before as a couch-surfer. She says her mother doesn't have much English. We have been trying to attend some of the films at the Summer Film Festival in Bunbury, Western Australia. Our last chance to see one of the films will be while we have our guests. I was pondering on whether it would still be possible to see the film and perhaps take our guests with us. I was thinking the mother doesn't speak much English but if the film is a foreign one then there will be subtitles and we'd all be in the same boat. She'd be able to follow just as well as us. Ten seconds later it struck me that if she can't speak English she probably can't read it either. Sometimes I am so thick I scare myself.

To be able to read English and to be able to speak and understand it it's another matter. Anyway, it is very possible that she cannot read English. For what concerns to watch a movie in a language you know very little following the subtitles, just try, you lose all the pleasure to watch the movie.

@JudyEv Sometimes I put the subtitles when I watch American movies that are heavy with slang. It's hard to understand. The Chinese New Year Festival sounds a good idea.

I think we'll probably give the movie a miss. There is actually a Chinese New Year Festival on in Bunbury on the Saturday so we'll probably take them to that.

@LadyDuck There are so many slang phrases in the English language. It must be very hard sometimes to follow a conversation.

But she'll have her daughter to translate for her .... oh chucks, that won't work, then no one will be able to hear the show. Music festival?? At least then she could dance

Well I guess leave it up to them as to whether or not they want to. The mother may enjoy the experience even without understanding the show.

That is true or they don't need to go at all if they'd rather not.

Haha that made me laugh! Sounds like the sort of thing I would do. I showed a colleague of mine a film I had brought in Vietnam. After a very long intro the actor and actressed made a grand entrance walked down a long staircase the first words they uttered were dubbed into Vietnamese. She was furious! I fell about laughing but told her well turn the sound off and I will lip read it for you! My name was mud I can tell you!

That is so funny. Why should she be so furious? Every time our power goes off I think 'oh, I'll do the ironing. I can't do much else' but of course if there is no power I can't iron. Another Duh moment.

@JohnRoberts Yes, that's it. We're now seeing it this afternoon instead. I keep getting the films and times all muddled - in case you're wondering what's going on in my brain. :)

It turns out it's an Indie film, The Family Fang, so it's in English. We're still not positive what day they arrive, etc.

I went through the same mental gymnastics as I read your post. It would be an "umba-psych" on you (as we used to say as kids) if the sub-titles were in Taiwanese, not English. Heh.

Did you read @xFiacre's comment? He once suggested they should have someone doing sign language for the benefit of a blind person. That made me feel a lot better!

Speaking and reading is different. Here many people know and understand very well English. But they can't able to speak , because they are not speaking it but always using hindi or their local language in the amidst of other friends.

She still might enjoy seeing the film. That would be a question to ask her. Sometimes people can understand and read a language better than when it is spoken.

@judyev Don't worry Judy; you're a member of a very large and humble fellowship and I'm the president of it. I once suggested that at an event a blind person was attending they could have had someone doing sign language for his benefit. By the way I sit through loads of Indian films without understanding a word but I just love them.
