Duh - and Double Duh

I wrote that we are expecting a Taiwanese lass and her mother soon. They will stay a couple of days with us. The girl has stayed before as a couch-surfer. She says her mother doesn't have much English.
We have been trying to attend some of the films at the Summer Film Festival in Bunbury, Western Australia. Our last chance to see one of the films will be while we have our guests. I was pondering on whether it would still be possible to see the film and perhaps take our guests with us.
I was thinking the mother doesn't speak much English but if the film is a foreign one then there will be subtitles and we'd all be in the same boat. She'd be able to follow just as well as us. Ten seconds later it struck me that if she can't speak English she probably can't read it either. Sometimes I am so thick I scare myself.

To be able to read English and to be able to speak and understand it it's another matter. Anyway, it is very possible that she cannot read English. For what concerns to watch a movie in a language you know very little following the subtitles, just try, you lose all the pleasure to watch the movie.

Well I guess leave it up to them as to whether or not they want to. The mother may enjoy the experience even without understanding the show.

That is true or they don't need to go at all if they'd rather not.

Haha that made me laugh! Sounds like the sort of thing I would do. I showed a colleague of mine a film I had brought in Vietnam. After a very long intro the actor and actressed made a grand entrance walked down a long staircase the first words they uttered were dubbed into Vietnamese. She was furious! I fell about laughing but told her well turn the sound off and I will lip read it for you! My name was mud I can tell you!

@JohnRoberts Yes, that's it. We're now seeing it this afternoon instead. I keep getting the films and times all muddled - in case you're wondering what's going on in my brain. :)

That's true! So I don't think we'll take her to the cinema.

She still might enjoy seeing the film. That would be a question to ask her. Sometimes people can understand and read a language better than when it is spoken.

That's very true. It isn't a big deal either way so we'll check with them before we make a decision.

We don't have to go the movies. I was just trying to work it all out - but didn't do very well.

@judyev Don't worry Judy; you're a member of a very large and humble fellowship and I'm the president of it. I once suggested that at an event a blind person was attending they could have had someone doing sign language for his benefit. By the way I sit through loads of Indian films without understanding a word but I just love them.

Some films would be easy to follow I'm sure even if there were no subtitles. .
