It gives new meaning to the term "drive thru".

I was texting my sister this afternoon, and as usual, she wasn't in a great mood. However, it was for a different reason that normal. Her father-in-law drove through a Burger King. I know some of you have seen it on the news before, someone thinks they are putting their foot on the brake, and then they end up on the gas pedal. I mean it's rare, but we've seen it before, and often it's someone in a certain age group. I hesitated to say that because I'm not trying to say anything negative about the elderly (my brother-in-law's parents are quite a bit older than my own dad and late mom). I mean I remember a lady calling 911 because her brakes wouldn't work, and it turned out she just kept putting her foot on the gas. And she was in her twenties! So, I realize people of a certain age aren't the only ones who make vehicular hiccups.
Thankfully, no one was hurt, and the car went through the side of the restaurant where no one was seated. My sister's father-in-law is just fine as well. My brother-in-law headed to Kansas where his dad lives. He was planning on visiting soon, but this just moved the visit up.
Can you imagine how horrible that would be? I'd be terrified I'd hurt someone, but also incredibly embarrassed after I found out no one was hurt. I imagine his car insurance will skyrocket.
I've been in car accidents before, one that started a road of back and neck surgeries (and a burn that left a lovely scar), but I was never at fault. I haven't had one in 18 years and I hope I can keep that streak going!

Poor man, glad to know he and no one was hurt.
Yes these things can happen to anyone.
Sorry to hear of your neck and back problems and burn because of the accident too Ambie.
Yes I used to cringe whenever I would pass an accident, is part of the reason why I do not drive anymore, have no desire to.

Yes, I feel sick if it is a bad accident and people are critically or fatally hurt,
Lol, I remember years ago my friends brother that was a teenager drove his Volkswagon Bug to the 7 11 store and he too thought he was putting his foot on the brake and instead hit the gas and went right thru the huge window. He stopped inside right beside the comic book stand. He was embarrased and just picked up a comic book and started reading it. Lol!
But it happens around here quite a bit!

I feel awful when I drive by an accident. I worry for the people involved and all the stress they will have to deal with in taking care of the situation. I also worry that someone may have been seriously injured. My grandfather got to the point where he was having way too many accidents. My dad had to make some phone calls to have his license taken away. :-(

Accidents can happen at any age; however, older drivers should stop driving when they can't react quickly. I'm glad nobody was hurt.

I try not to look and always say a prayer for those involved.
I'm a firm believer in testing after the age of 64. Every driver over 64 should be tested every year and if their doc thinks they should not drive he or she should be able to tell the DMV and have their license taken away. I've seen too many older drivers in accidents that hurt people, including themselves. If they don't want to lose their independence then they can damn well use taxis or whatever instead of asking friends or family to drive them.
I'm 62 and I think by the time I'm 65 I'll have quit driving. I know my reflexes are slowing down and I compensate for it.

Accidents are scary as heck! We were in a little one over the summer, and now my daughter is petrified in the car. I literally can't take my eyes off the road or she'll freak out at me... at the accident wasn't even caused by distraction!

Oh my gosh, we passed by a really bad accident yesterday - on the freeway. Our side was backed up a bit, but it all happened on the other side and that side was really backed up for miles. We saw 2 badly messed up cars - in fact the van was smashed and upside down. We had that horrible feeling - and knew it could not have been good. When we got home, we saw it on the news - and heard the details - it was worse than we thought

So glad to hear no one was hurt. I hate to see what his insurance will be like after this. The state may take his driving privileges away. My mom is in her late 60's and does not like to drive anymore. It reminds me of her age and how she is slowing down and it makes me sad.
I don't let accidents bother me. Most of the time I am one of the people who will stop and help out if needed.

I think it is more a curiosity how bad determined by a visual inspection as you are slowly passing by. Is that something everyone could walk away from without serious harm? Property damage if any also a good way to help recreate the events.

It is one thing to see an accident acted on a television show but seeing one either on a video sharing channel or real life can be very shocking. I do remember many years ago when a female driver who had no brakes in her car crashed through a mechanic shop in Metairie Louisiana. Thank goodness no one was hurt when the car broke through the glass in the seating area where everyone got out of the way in time.
