How long after the expiration date is yogurt still good?

I was just cruising through my fridge in search of a post-class snack. I found several containers of Trader Joe's French Village Yogurt in there--yum! The first one I grabbed had an expiration date of November 27th, 2016. I paused and put it back. The next one I grabbed had an expiration date of February 27, 2017. I gobbled it up.
I've eaten yogurt a month past its expiration date, and it was fine. But I'm wondering if anyone hows how far out you can go. Once I discovered a yogurt container that was two years I old. I opened it up, just to see what would happen. The mold started oozing out and crept across my kitchen floor, where it ate my pet hamster. I tried beating it back with a broom, but it only moved faster, and started heading toward my parrot.
I had to pour Acetone on it and then set it on fire to stop it.
Is yogurt still good two months after the expiration date? How far after the expiration date will you consume yogurt and other dairy products?

2-3 weeks for unopened yogurt seems to be the rule but I've eaten it way past then.
If it doesn't smell bad I'll taste it and if it tastes ok I eat it
When drunk I had some 3 months past its date and it was fine.
If people stick absolutely to dates they'll end up wasting food...manufacturers put dates on stuff to protect themselves it doesn't mean the food is bad.

@TheHorse You'll probably see a lot of liquid on top...just stir than in.
If it smells like off milk don't eat it
The thing I'm quite wary of is meat...but even then if you cook it at a certain temp it may be ok.
Fish is another thing, I don't eat fish if it smells fishy
Rice is another thing that isn't great if it has been cooked and left.
I just did another food hygiene course at work

Personally I won't eat it if it is beyond a month past the expiration date. Yogurt is sour milk and really don't want to push that envelope.

Nice of you to put the expired one back.
Sorry about the hamster.
The thing is, when you check with a company that makes a product, they will never say such a thing can be used beyond the expiration date. However, we know our g'parents and many more would just eat it and be quiet about it.

@TheHorse Traditional buttermilk. I think.

I just did an experiment on myself. I found one dated November 1 (meaning I bought it way before Halloween). It was Vanilla. I searched for mold, found none, and took a bite. Then I tossed it. I'll let the world know if I wake up Exorcist vomiting overnight or something. It tasted tart but not bad.

I don't think there is a certain amount of time. I doubt it is good two months after the expiration date. A few days, even a week maybe, but not two months.

@TheHorse .....Right. See that could happen. Why take the chance. Check the date before you buy and don't buy so many maybe next time.

If it tastes fresh I do not think expiry dates matter.

The day they make it or 3 weeks later, I wouldn't eat it...ugh...it's not on my food list at all.

I used to be observe those dates too, but the "sell by" does not equate to rotten. Plain yogurt will last a long time I know. I see you got some good answers here.

I usually open the packaging, see the texture and smell it. If everything is ok, I don't see any problems.

@TheInvisibleMan Yeah, the yogurt was a bit tart, but otherwise fine. One has to be cautious, though. I think that mold can start at the bottom, and you won't see it if you don't peek at what's at the bottom of the container.

Yogurt is a dairy product, and as such I personally wouldn't eat it beyond a week after the expiration date.

Here's my comment to @snowy_woman. We'll see what happens.

I never realized there was an expiration date on it, but that does sound reasonable that it should, since it's dairy. Now I need to look at my yogurt to find if it's all past expiration or whether it will do the same thing yours did when you opened an old yogurt

I hope yours haven't expired--at least not by too many days. That was a difficult day for me. I buried Fuzzy at my friend's pet cemetery, and a beautiful flower came up in the shape of a hamster. Actually it looked to some like a gerbil, or maybe a blender, but it was a hamster to me.

I've eaten yoghurt two months after its best before date....when we were cleaning out my parents fridge whe my mother passed away we found a yoghurt tub that was four years old....we cautiously, at arms length opened the container. Then we started to laugh....it was full of Halloween packages if Reese's pieces.....they were also three years old. They tasted just fine.

The super expired yogurt turned into a monster mold?
Scary!
Please don't let Pikachu near one.. Anyways, seriously I do eat food past on its expiration date but I checked them first and try a little taste test. If it looks and taste normal I still eat them.
