I am in hot water

The phrase about hot water means that I am in some kind of trouble...maybe I forgot to take something out for dinner or I broke something that belonged to someone else. None of that going on however.
One of my big complaints since we moved in this house 4 years ago is that it takes FOREVER for the hot water to get hot. I can literally turn the kitchen faucet on and maybe 10 minutes later the water is hot. We seriously thought about buying one of those tank less hot water heaters but they are not cheap.
When the plumber was here last week fixing our leak I asked about the hot water. He said that is a simple fix. First off, plumbers try (if possible) to locate a hot water heater centered in a house. Ours is not centered it is at one end of the basement...kitchen is almost at the opposite end of the house.
Solution: install a circulating pump....we first had our neighbor install a 110 outlet near the water heater for the pump. Today plumber is here installing the pump. It involves running a line and all kinds of shinny brass fittings. He said that the job would run around $400 which is way less than the cost of a tank less unit. He figures when I turn on the kitchen faucet it will take 6 second to have hot water. That theory will be tested out shortly!
That means several things: less complaining by me....less water down the drain and less electricity! A win-win situation.

Glad there is a cheaper fix. Sounds like you could heat water on the stove faster.

We use propane for cooktop and propane doesn't get as hot as natural gas. I think electric stoves at previous homes made hot water faster than propane. But now I can fill a pot with hot water from the tap!

I was going to ask if you needed some ice cubes .... butttt ....
$400 sound cheap compared to what it cost me to get a plumber to install a new water heater a few hears ago. Hopefully you'll send me the name of that guy so I can call him to ask if he makes out of town house calls

Electric bill and water bill should be helped...it probably won't be very noticeable.

@AbbyGreenhill We think our changes here made a difference. Not enough to buy a car, but a bit of savings.

@PatZAnthony Since bills are never the same month to month it will be hard to tell with electric, but water we should see a big difference, since the leak is fined plus this 'fix'

@AbbyGreenhill We use the gas a lot here in the south because it's far less expensive than electricity.

Our water takes a long time to get to the kitchen tap but nowhere like 10 minutes. We'd run out of water quick smart if it took that long every time.
