Am I A Hoarder?

This morning @JudyEv suggested that I might be a hoarder. I told her that after making three quilts from a bin of scraps of fabric There was not a noticeable dent in the pile. As a quilter I might be a bit of a fabricaholic, but I feel I'm more of a collector. My cupboard if full of colour pieces of cotton, just waiting for time and inspiration to hit at the same moment. When inspiration hits...I don't have time to run to the store for a piece of fabric, so it needs to be conveniently nearby. As far as those scraps go.....I read once, all those scraps cost us the same amount as our yard goods. We wouldn't consider just throwing them away. In my defence. In the last year I have used more fabric from my stash than I have purchased to replace it. I don't think that I'm a hoarder....I just have a really nice collection of quilting fabrics.

I fully agree with you, you are not a hoarder, there is a lot of difference between a hoarder and a collector.

@Morleyhunt This is what I think when I re-arrange my things, but they are not less, only more well arranged.

Hoarders don't usually use what they hoard unlike you who have use of what you had collected. You're right. You're not a hoarder. You're a crafter.

And at the moment I'm being good. I'm using more than I am buying.

Your cabinet looks neat and tidy to me. I think that most hoarders are very disorganized.

But that's only one shelf. I'm vain enough to take a photo of the neatest shelf.

I wouldn't consider you a hoarder and from the picture all your fabric looks neatly organized. I love to browse all at the beautiful fabric when I go to Hobby Lobby but I never have a project in mind to buy any.

I'm showing one shelf...I'm smart enough to make sure that it's my neatest shelf. I have three pantry units full.

I think your post puts me in a bit of a bad light - but that won't hurt me. When I was crocheting full steam I had bags of wool all over the place - all different plys, different colours. But most of it got used eventually. Woodworkers would have oddments of timber all over the place, spinners would have bits of fleece here, there and everywhere. It's what happens when you have a hobby.

It wasn't intended to put you in a negative light.....I just wanted to give you credit for making me think this through. When it comes to fabric.....I probably am just a bit of a hoarder.

@Morleyhunt I think many of us are hoarders of items that are important to us.

I would not consider you a hoarders. I would consider you a collector. You collector things that you are going to use. I wouldn't consider that hoarding.

I'm probably borderline. I have thinned my collection and am trying to work my way through some of this lovely fabric.

Quilters and hoarders are two different people. I am more of a hoarder who aspires to be a quilter.

I need to beat back my stash from time to time....wrestle my scraps down to manageable proportions......time to make another quilt.

Maybe not to point of hoarding, more like collecting. In my imagination, hoarders tend to have lots of stuff to the point of suffocating.

I've been in a hoarders house. There was a path through the living room....a path into each bedroom...a path through the basement...lit was crammed full.

I think the ultimate hoarder is when a man goes to the transfer station and comes BACK with just as much stuff as he left with, but its different stuff. And yes........I know of several men that have fallen prey to that.

We bought a house once that was rented by hoarders.....if I'm a hoarder, they had a huge, colossal head start on me. It took five tractor trailer loads to move their stuff out of the three bedroom 1000 square foot bungalow.

I don't think that you are a hoarder because you have lots of fabric at home. My Mom just loved buying fabric and did a lot of craft and used all of it. It was always neatly organized.

@Morleyhunt If you need certain things around all the time then maybe it is for convenience purposes you have them around and not for the purpose of hoarding. Do you material throughout the whole place or in just one area?
