Before and After

On another post a few friends said they might like to see before and after of my art. I don't often show my art on line because a lot of people will think “is that art? “ Art or not it is hand done by me and it sells fast and furious. I paint on slate. I prefer used slate that comes from the roof of very old homes. I can buy new slate but the used slate is more interesting. In the photo above you can see the rust on the slate on the left. And you can see what acid rain did to the one on the right. All the imperfections ad interest to the end product. Once the paint is dry the slate is sprayed with a product that protects it. It can be hung inside or outside. A lot of my signs hang in peoples patios or on their gates. So the photo above shows the washed slate sketched on it with chalk, once that is done I use paint to put the words on it and when the words are dry I decorate with colors, lines and circles. The lines and circles are something new to me, In the past I have done nature scenes or flowers and fruit but the lines are the most popular. I usually do 4 to 6 at the same time, so while one is drying another is on the go...The final thing done is the beads on wire for the hanger (not shown in this photo) and my signature on the back also mentioning it is hand painted on Antique Slate. Thanks for asking and I hope this did not bore you!! Any questions?

That is really interesting and not boring at all. I think you are very talented. I thought of you when we saw painted slate in the Lakes District in England.

I've seen a lot of it on the internet but haven't seen anyone but me doing it in this area.

This indeed is a novel idea and the fact that you sell it like hot cakes shows your art is in demand

I am so excited to see this post. Seeing people's art on here is so exciting for me. While I am not the greatest artist it is a passion of mine so I love seeing others art work. That is so neat you use old slate from people's roofs. I have never seen a home with slate on the roofs. How do you get it? Do you buy it when people are demolishing a home? I am so intrigued by this post!

@PainsOnSlate wow that is so cool! I would have thought even though the slate was used it might be more costly as it could be considered antique. Where do your sister and brother live in the U.S.?

@shaggin I was born in Schenectady, NY and lived there until I was 7, then my parents moved us to the country, the local town is Clifton Park and Rexford, New York. My sister and her husband live in the house our parents built - but they renovated before moving in...

I'm glad you enjoyed the post. I go to online sites where people sell there stuff on line - like Craigslist (in the states) and Kijiji here in Canada, if its sold near by I phone and make a date to look at the slate. The used slate is always dirty and I usually buy it in the states so i have to wash it before I cross the border so i buy it there when visiting my sister ... I can't bring dirt across the border.. Also in the states some roofing companies sell used slate and its clean... and its half the price of the new slate. The last batch I bought in the States, it was a house that removed the slate roof and put on a new one..I got the whole roof, so much I couldn't bring it back in one time, half of it lived at my brothers house and I brought the rest home on my last visit..

A W E S O M E!!! I love what you've done and boy is that kool how you used the chalk first, it explains a lot and I can see how old slate gives a little character to what you paint.

@PatZAnthony Very true, Love the phrase and the guts to continue. I know my work is demanded and enjoyed by all who buy it for what ever reason, I just haven't been posting photo because so many people just copy my work but....why should I care? I really don't because I know the stores that love my work and sells my product will continue selling my work..

I do have a good time doing it and wish it would be worth mailing then but its not, the slate is pretty heavy which makes my slate too expensive to mail.

I do love the age marks on the used slate. The new slate you can buy at a roofing company is actually too heavy for me but if I can't find used, I do buy the new...They are harder to cut into the sizes i need. Often when I go to my favorite roofing company they have used slate for sale..I love it when I see that. I usually go through website that people sell stuff on to find my slate. I found some locally just the other day and will buy it from them after our winter is over...it just arrived yesterday...

Yes it is art! How big are these and how heavy?

These slate are 9x11 inches and pretty light. When I used new slate which is heavy I tried mailing it to a friend and found it cost twice the price of the art so I don't do that. Canadian postage is outrageous so I take it across the border to mail it but that is not as easy as it sounds..

Oh course you didn't bore me. I think painting on slate is a skill and of course it is art. These 2 pieces with a lot of lettering - few people know until you try it yourself how hard painting letters is! Bravo I say!

Thank you, you are so kind. I've been doing it for a long time but because I am a lousy speller I have to have it proof read before I paint it...
