Mr. Clean/Ms Clean

I had an inspection yesterday. Once a year, an inspector from the housing authority comes to check my apartment. They want to see if anything is wrong, whether it be my fault, or the apartment's fault (they go through, open and shut cabinet doors, open and close windows to make sure they are safe). For instance, my bathtub used to take 3 hours to drain. If I told her about that she would contact the apartment management and make them take care of it; they would get in trouble if they didn't. Whereas if I'd somehow torn my carpet up it would be upon me to fix it, or pay to get it fixed (or if I moved out I would lose my deposit). So the inspection went quickly, and when it was over she thanked me for having my apartment so clean. I laughed, but she said mine is the cleanest apartment she inspects (she's been my inspector for the last 10 yrs.). She said sometimes she walks into the apartments and it's so bad she tells them they have to reschedule because it needs to be better before she inspects it. I still have some clutter in my bedroom because of lack of space for my late mother's things, but it's placed neatly where it sits. I warned her not to trip when we went into my bedroom, but she said, "You call this clutter?" It would be hard for me to live in a filthy place. Even if one is poor, you can do a lot if you just keep your place clean. Of course some have disabilities and it makes it more difficult (I can relate as sometimes my back prevents me from being on top of things), but I think the atmosphere of where you live really affects your well being, especially mentally.

Well sounds like the inspection went as well as it could! This puts me to shame . . . we have a lot of clutter here . . . between both kids' stuff and all the craft stuff and what not . . . I need to shape this place up better (regularly). But we're working on it - there's just not a lot of time (that's my excuse ).

You can always clean one room at a time if you have health problems. I sweep the whole house than an hour later mop everything.

Also, you live alone so it's easier to maintain.. I gave up on having a clean place. Everytime I start to clean I see random messes that shouldn't be there and just get upset and overwhelmed because the kids don't clean up after themselves, and I'm too tired, busy to catch everything as it happens. Maybe I'll have a clean house when the kids grow up! For now I just focus on having clean dishes and laundry... which in itself is enough to fill my waking hours..

I'm also paranoid because I have an indoor dog. I never want someone to walk in and think, I can definitely tell she has a dog.

@AmbiePam Yeah, my mom felt that way about the cats.. but she smoked so much all you could smell was smoke! She didn't seem to mind that, even when we washed all the yellow off the walls a couple times a year..

We all have a pinch of clutter if we are living a real life. Imagine what she has seen? Wow. Would not want that job, would you?

No way, no how. She said she likes not having to be in an office all day, but more power to her. I couldn't do it.

@AmbiePam Me either. We have seen enough of how some live. Don't want to be part of the inspection crew!

Good for you! I know when I first moved into my apartment - there were still boxes everywhere. And I needed the maintenance man. I apologized for the mess and he said it was hardly the worst that he'd seen. I agree, a clean space does wonders for me, mentally, too

Inspection in terms of maintenance is fine but otherwise I do not think the inspector should worry about how a flat is kept - just saying.

I think in some cases it was actually hazardous. Like boxes and other items were so spread out that it was hard to move. But they do count cleanliness. She once failed my bathroom sink. I don't use it because ever since I moved it there is a black ring around the drain. I pour bleach on it every week, and it goes away (then comes back, repeating the cycle). A couple of years ago when she came over she failed the sink and told me she'd have to come back when it was clean. I simply told her to wait, grabbed bleach, and she was able to leave because the black "ring" was gone shortly after I poured. So it is kind of odd.

It's nice to be praised because inspections can be a source of anxiety.

I never lived in a situation like that but I don't think I would like having an inspection.

Yeah, it isn't ideal, but on the plus side if the complex won't fix a problem I can call the inspector and they can force the complex to comply.

I think you are right. I couldn't live in a messy, dirty house. I'm no Mrs. clean but my house looks good and tidy even if it wouldn't pass the white glove test...

Clutter causes mental and physical stress. I have a hubby with lots of clutter as well as my own. Congrats on being a positive note in the inspector's day.

I bet those inspectors are the ones who find those hoarders on TV. I always wondered how that show so many hoarders. Glad yours went fine.
